We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"IBM support is friendly, knowledgeable, and they always respond quickly. They've always been able to find the cause of my problem.""The platform’s most valuable feature is its ability to verify the recoverability of backups.""It helps our customers protect their data, especially with stuff like ransomware, compliance, and regulatory requirements.""It scales well for the amount of clients that we use with it.""Support of the IBM X platform and the backup data replication to DR are the most valuable features.""It has to ability to backup DV2, Oracle, and Informix.""From a tech perspective, utilizing deduplication is one of the most valuable features.""The product helps us do data protection and restoration for disaster recovery (DR)."

"I can't think of any improvements yet for Veeam because they are very good. It integrates very well with Microsoft applications. It is very easy to integrate. Micro Focus can also integrate but it's more complex. You have to know the product very well to be able to integrate. While Veeam, it's very user-friendly. You don't need to have certifications or anything to work on Veeam.""The backup and replication features of this solution are most valuable.""Enables us to restore the VM when the needs arises and for disaster recovery.""They provide good technical support and we are satisfied with the support we have received.""The initial setup was not overly complex.""The ability of instant VM recovery, which means starting the backup VM and getting it online while the recovery is still happening is the most valuable feature.""Strong performance with a high level of compatibility.""The solution is stable and the performance is good."

Cons
"I need to have more than two instances working together. I need a worldwide grid able to have replication between three, four, or five instances.""The solution is evolving, so it has to be evolved to fit all new types of software requirements too.""It needs agents that take into account more databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.).""It needs BMR (bare machine recovery) solutions for both Windows and Linux systems.""An area for improvement would be the ease of use - the GUI is not up to the mark compared to other products in the market.""In a future release, it would be a benefit to have the ability to add an application as a storage target, as a storage pool. Additionally, they should add more functionality to the administration for the Operation Center.""It does what we need it to do, but it could be better with VM backups. It could be better integrated with virtual machines or VM backups, but that's why they have their Plus out now. Plus version is more geared toward VM backups. The regular version is more for endpoint clients.""We cannot take VMware backups for our banking data center environment."

More IBM Spectrum Protect Cons →

"I don't see much room for improvement except that the price could be better.""I like the Acronis backup solutions on the block-based part of backups. That is a functionality that Veeam does not provide.""The solution could improve by having more user-friendly dashboards.""There is always some room for improvement, especially with some of the different technologies such as DB2. Commvault has a DB2 agent, but Veeam still doesn't have it. We have to use the universal one for it.""The implementation was straightforward. However, we used an integrator, the process could be easier for us to do it ourselves.""We have had problems with some jobs. For example, when we have a VM with a large SQL Database, sometimes we cannot adjust the time for transaction logs to back up and overlap time.""Its native capability for talking to the public cloud needs improvement. Connecting to a public cloud is a little bit more of a challenge when it comes to Veeam than it is with Rubrik or Commvault. There are still some hoops that you got to jump through in order to send Veeam backups out to public cloud repositories. It is not as simple as it is with other products.""They need to address the confusing recovery dialogue."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Technical support is pretty good. It is doing fine, but you pay for it."
  • "Licensing can be either complicated or simple depending on what type of licensing you wish to use and what works best for your environment."
  • "At scale, the consumption license (per TB) is very expensive."
  • "Use capacity licensing. It's easier and cheaper."
  • "We worked our licensing into a capacity model, which is nice. Now, everything is much simpler to manage from a licensing perspective."
  • "We chose IBM Spectrum Protect, because they actually have something called MSP pricing, which means managed services provider pricing. The pricing was attractive, and it seems to be a platform that IBM is totally investing on in terms of new functions and new capabilities."
  • "Spectrum Protect is not expensive, and it is simple to use."
  • "It is very scalable, but the downside is that it costs money."

  • "If you have Exchange, Oracle, SQL, or a supported SAN, then I suggest getting at least an Enterprise edition. It’ll pay for itself in no time."
  • "The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better."
  • "Room for improvement is actually more in the way of licensing. The really good and useful features are in the Enterprise plus edition, and that one is really expensive."
  • "Since pricing is per socket, it is not expensive to add capacity as you go along."
  • "The licensing is based on the number of cores you have in your ESX or Hyper-V environment."
  • "The price is a bit high. Licensing type is VMware friendly, so it is easy."
  • "I think the price is good when you choose the Essentials Suite, but when you buy a full featured version (for instance the Enterprise Plus) the price is a little bit expensive."
  • "Setup cost and licensing of Veeam are nothing to complain about when compared to similar products for enterprise backup recovery solutions."

    Reviews from Real Users

Veeam Backup & Replication is a solution that stands out when compared to many of its competitors. Some of its major advantages are its ease of set up, the fact that it is agentless, and that it has an intuitive dashboard.

A Network Operations Manager at an educational organization says, "Integration with VMware is excellent with very granular recovery."

An Inside Solutions Architect at a tech services company mentions, “I like that it's agent-less, easy to set up, and hardware-agnostic.”

An Account Manager at a tech services company states, “The dashboard is very, very easy to understand. We do demonstrations all the time with customers just to show them. If they've lost particular files because of a server going down, we can retrieve those files for them and quickly bring those files back up.”

Kerem C., Director of Professional Services/Senior Solution Architect/Trainer at a tech services company, explains, “It's good for backup performance management and backup window management.”
