We performed a comparison between Sophos UTM and Untangle NG Firewall based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two Unified Threat Management (UTM) solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."There is an easy process for configuring it, and it is straightforward to implement the device from scratch."
"The solution is stable."
"Consolidated our network environment at all locations, but mainly at our datacenter."
"The next-gen features, the unified threat management capabilities are something that just about everybody is interested in at this point."
"Fortinet FortiGate is stable. It's used across all the countries, this is the way most multinationals run their system."
"It is simple to manage, and there are a lot of functionalities in the same box."
"The network security and cloud security are most valuable."
"Our project needs to link two sides through the internet. One of these was in Cairo and the other in another city. We used FortiGate as the integrating solution between the two locations, i.e. the Fortinet 30E & 100E."
"The isolation of infected machines is a big feature. Also, the ability to detect external sources that change files on a file server is really big."
"Sophos has a single pane of glass which allows me to manage all my VPCs from a single instance, managing all my firewall from one place."
"It helps us with protection, with concurrent use of the VPN."
"The scalability is good."
"The firewall itself is very strong and provides great security."
"It allows our developers to be able to securely log into servers to deploy and manage software."
"An easy solution to learn because the graphics are very intuitive."
"It is not an easy task to protect your web servers from the big bad internet. The Web Server Protection in this solution does it elegantly and, if configured correctly, even hides the server's base system from prying eyes."
"The web blocking for my clients and the application control are valuable."
"The most valuable features are IPS, MAPI, NAT, and VPN."
"It is not attached to an appliance, meaning if you get a good PC/server, then you can already run a firewall."
"We find the web filter very valuable."
"NG Firewalls allow us to permit or deny applications we don't want to run. We also use content filtering, SSL inspection, and all the other things we run on the firewall to keep our clients protected and ensure they're not going where they shouldn't. It's a great firewall that works as intended."
"What I like about this product, which is the reason that we continue to use it, is that you can install the software version on your own hardware. In case there is a problem with the hardware, we can just install the firewall in another machine and restore the configuration."
"Web Filter is effective, Web Cache offers bandwidth savings, and the VPN setup is easy."
"The features I have found the most useful are the web filter, the captive portal, the SSL inspector, and the ad-blocker. They're awesome."
"I use the FortiGate 60D model and realized the 300Mbps bandwidth limitation. Because it is a product that offers many services, I think it could have greater bandwidth capacity."
"There is a lot of improvement needed with SSL-VPN."
"It is very expensive, and their support is not very good. I hope that their technical support will be better in the future."
"The sniffing packets or packet captures, can be simplified and improved because it's a little confusing."
"There are mainly two areas of improvement in Fortinet FortiGate— the licensing cost and the timing of upgrading licenses for boxes."
"With FortiGate, the main complaint that I have heard is about the technical support."
"There are problems with the custom reporting of the unique traffic. The data is there, but it is too difficult for us to extract."
"I would like to see improvements in the support from Fortinet. Here in the Philippines, whenever we have problems with a Fortinet product, we mostly ask for support from distributors and resellers and not directly from Fortinet."
"Sophos UTM could improve the way the configuration has to be done. I have to do the configuration through the command line interface but if it could be done through the graphical user interface it would be much better."
"I would like this solution to support ICAP. Also, they no longer support on-premises management, and are forcing clients to use centralized management via the cloud, which I don't agree with."
"Anti-phishing functionality should be improved."
"The classification segregation of applications lacks sufficient definition."
"With Sophos UTM, there is a general rule in the firewall when the country blocking can block some countries from accessing your data. In the current version, you still need to add it by putting in the IP range. This feature would be helpful for administrators and it gives them the advantage to block stuff in less time."
"We would like to have unique viewable IDs for rules and in the packet filter logfile, for easier debugging of old log files."
"In short, the UI and UX are the areas of improvement in Sophos UTM and similar solutions compared to Palo Alto."
"It would be nice if it had basic features, such as DLP (Data Loss Prevention)."
"The product needs to have a better support group for its online support, specifically for its help desk."
"The product needs to improve its mobile application."
"The storage is minimal, so we have to set the system to delete data after seven days."
"They don't have any feature that allows you to drop the session."
"Whenever there are a large number of endpoint VPN clients, connectivity becomes slow."
"The hardware can be improved."
"There is room for improvement in the logs. Like with Cisco, I can do almost everything and know almost anything about what's running. Untangle works very much out of the box. It's very user-friendly, but it's not engineer-friendly. So, it's good for a home user. For something fairly easy, but at the same time, with good technology to have at home, because at home, I'm not a millionaire or anything like that. So it's not like I'm worried to get hacked. I didn't want something like a Cisco firewall; it would be a bit overkill to have at home. So that's why I went for Untangle. But it lacks a few features. It's just a tick-box kind of thing. So they have apps and turn on and off the apps. The VPN's configuration is all very ticked. They have a few custom configurations, but it's not that much."
"The ability to setup a DDNS for each WAN independently would be a very handy feature."
