We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"UTM/NGFW features and FortiCloud for logs and backups are awesome.""The email protection and VPN features are the most valuable.""You can purchase switches and you don't need to do anything with them. You just put in the firewall and the switches get all the policies and rules that you already have in the firewall. With Fortinet, you just connect the FortiSwitch to the Fortinet and that's it.""Fortinet FortiGate's ease of management is the most valuable feature.""The solution is scalable.""The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are the ease of use and the UI. It has always provided me with what I needed. I have no need for additional costs that other solutions have, such as Sophos.""Fortinet FortiGate is a scalable solution.""The license management is very valuable. You can get a new license each year, or you can enroll every two to four years. You can get the logs, and you will get the information on the risk in your network and the entire organization. With this information, you can take action on your actives, computers, or devices. You can bring your own device as an SSE."

"The most valuable features of this solution are advanced malware protection, IPS, and IDS.""An efficient, easy to deploy and dependable firewall solution.""The most valuables feature of this product are given by the comprehensive VPN solutions it offers and its tools for troubleshooting and debugging.""REST API offering with rich capabilities which makes the product very robust.""At this point, we find that this product has high productivity and high availability and there is no need for improvement.""One of the best features is the ease of use. It's also easy to teach new engineers to use the ASA CLI.""For companies prioritizing security, the optimal choice is one that offers a range of feeds to cater to diverse needs. This is particularly crucial for organizations implementing DDoS mitigation. The preferred solutions typically align with the top server vendors, with Cisco, Forti, and Barracuda consistently ranking among the top three vendors we collaborate with.""The stability is very good; there's no vagueness. Either it works or it doesn't, and it's also very easy to find out why."

"It is a scalable solution.""Sophos XGS' best features are simplicity and its built-in reporting tool.""The most valuable features of Sophos XGS are the ease of use and powerful interface.""The most valuable feature of Sophos is the VPN solution. I also value their threat management, IPS IDS features and login features with single sign-on.""It's much faster than the previous firewall, so you can do the work faster.""One of the main advantages of Sophos XGS is the processor. You don't have to wait a long time for when you are managing the firewall and the traffic is faster now.""The most valuable features of Sophos XGS for me are XGS IPS, SD-WAN, VPN setup, email protection, and integration with endpoint security.""Sophos XGS's best features are its VPN and ATPR1 cert protection."

More Sophos XGS Pros →

Cons
"The solution could be more evenly structured.""Maybe they could make some features more accessible, such as a way to translate directions between two networks that share the same subnets.""It can be a little bit more user-friendly in terms of policy definition and implementation. It seems a little bit complicated, and it could be simplified.""Fortinet should focus on enhancing the capabilities of FortiGate by consolidating its various products, such as FortiGate Cloud, FortiManager, and FortiAnalyzer.""Technical support needs to be improved.""The command line is complicated, and the interface could be better.""In terms of what could be improved, the SD-WAN is quite difficult, because if you install the new box, 15 is okay, but if you change from an old configuration, if there is already configuration and a policy when you change to SD-WAN, you must change the whole policy that you see in the interface.""There can be more security in hybrid implementations. When a customer has a hybrid environment where some parts are in the cloud, we need a consistent security solution for such scenarios."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"Cisco Secure Firewall's integration with cloud providers has room for improvement. We could do more in terms of integration, for example, if we had a tag on an instance.""We don't have any serious problems. The firewall models that we have are quite legacy, and they have slower performance. We are currently investigating the possibility of migrating to next-generation firewalls.""One of my colleagues is using the firewall as an IPS, but he is worried about Firepower's performance... With the 10 Gb devices, when it gets to 5 Gbps, the CPU usage goes up a lot and he cannot manage the IPS.""It will be nice if they had what you traditionally would use a web application scanner for. If the solution could take a deeper look into HTTP and HTTPS traffic, that would be nice.""We would like to be able to manage a set of firewalls rather than individual firewalls. We haven't really looked into it or yet implemented it, but a single pane of glass would be helpful. We also use another vendor's firewalls, and they have a centralized management infrastructure that we have implemented, which makes it a little bit easier when you're managing lots of firewalls.""I would like the ability to pick and choose different features of it to run in a packaged infrastructure or modules, therefore I would like to have more customizability over it.""I have used Fortinet, Palo Alto, and Check Point previously and I prefer the process of everything working together.""The product would be improved if the GUI could be brought into the 21st Century."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Cons →

"Sophos XGS could improve by having better integration with Active Directory.""The speed of report generation could be improved.""It would be good if we could do dual customization.""The solution could improve inspection processes and troubleshooting for VPNs because this area is very weak.""Its pricing could be better.""Sophos XGS could improve the price.""Sophos XGS needs improvement with the threshold values. Other solutions have the capacity to handle more users.""Sophos XGS could be improved by adding a built-in hyper-converged solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "Always plan ahead for three years. In other words, do not buy a firewall on what your needs are today, but try to predict where you will be three years from now in terms of bandwidth, security requirements, and changes in organizational design."
  • "I have to admit that the price is high. But I think it's worth it if the stability of your solution counts for you."
  • "It has a great performance-to-price value, compared to competitive solutions."
  • "Spec the right hardware model and choose the right license for your needs."
  • "Everything with Cisco is expensive. My advice is that there are a lot better options out in the market now."

  • "Cisco devices are for sure costly and budget could be an important constrain on selecting them as our security solution."
  • "Price point is too high for features and throughput available."

Cisco ASA vs. Palo Alto: Management Goodies You often have comparisons of both firewalls concerning security components. Of course, a firewall must block attacks, scan for viruses, build VPNs, etc. However, in this post I am discussing the advantages and disadvantages from both vendors concerning the management options: How to add and rename objects. How to update a device. How to find log entries. Etc. Cisco ASA Fast Management Suite: The ASDM GUI is really fast. You do not have to wait for the next window if you click on a certain button. It simply appears directly. On the Palo, each entry to add, e.g., an application inside a security rule, takes a few seconds. Better “Preview CLI Commands”: I am always checking the CLI commands before I send them to the firewall. On the Cisco ASA, they are quite easy to understand. I know, Palo Alto also offers the “Preview Changes”, but it takes a bit more time to recognize all XML paths. Better CLI Commands at all: For Cisco admins it is very easy to parse a “show run” and to paste some commands into another device. This is not that easy on a Palo Alto firewall. First, you must change the config-output format, and second, you cannot simply paste many lines into another device, since the ordering of these lines is NOT correct by default. That is, it simply doesn’t work. ACL Hit Count: I like the hit counts per access list entry in the GUI. It quickly reveals which entries are used very often and which ones are never used.
