We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The product is very stable. We put a decent amount of stress on it given our load.""I've worked a little bit with iRules and it is amazing.""It is the perfect solution when you have high workloads in your IT environment.""BIG-IP can do anything. It's like a Swiss Army knife.""It has made it a single entry point for all users, verging across all the VPCs. It is more of an SSO solution versus multitier user loggin.""It has so many features. First of all, it has a full proxy architecture, it has multiple modules. The best feature is the WAF, the web application firewall module. It also has cashing type capabilities. It has all kinds of load-balancing algorithms based on your IT requirements.""We plan to create packages of services from which it will be possible to build comprehensive tailor-made solutions.""It can determine if the system is going down, then route the traffic somewhere else."

"It has allowed us to evenly distribute the load across a number of servers, and check their health and automatically react to errors.""The most valuable thing for me is TCP/IP Layer 4 stuff you can do with HAProxy. You can go down to the protocol level and make decisions on something.""The VRRP redundancy is also a mission-critical feature that works seamlessly. I can bring down a server live with minimal downtime because of this.""It solves a problem for me where I can build files, not based on the health of the check, but rather the speed of the check.""The ease of use of the configuration, and great documentation, are the most valuable features for us.""It is stable. Period. Will not fail unless you do something wrong.""It improves our scalability and responsiveness services to meet our demanding customer requirements.""HAProxy potentially has a good return on investment"

Cons
"Fixing bugs.""Security and Reporting.""There is a challenge in Pakistan. This is when there is a hardware failure. Sometimes, it takes more time to get a replacement because it is sent out from the U.S. or some other regional outpost. Thus, it takes two to three days to receive a replacement.""F5 has another solution to load balance servers on the cloud, which they got after the purchase of NGINX. It is deployed as Kubernetes or something like that, but the problem now is that they have two solutions for two situations. They should make F5 deployable on the cloud.""In terms of pricing, it could be more competitive.""Technical support is somewhat slow and could be improved.""The user experience for dashboards and reports can be improved. They should make dashboards and the reporting system easier for users. They need to add more reports to the dashboard. Currently, for complicated reports, I have to do the customization. It should have more integration with network firewalls to be able to gather all the information required for traffic management.""Not everything is intuitive."

More F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) Cons →

"It needs proper HTTP/2 support.""The solution can be improved by controlling TCP behavior better and mandating to clients what the expected outcome must be in order to avoid receiving contestant timeout logs.""The product does not have any new technologies.""If nbproc = 2, you will have two processes of HAProxy running. However, the stats of HAProxy will not be aggregated, meaning you don't really know the collective status in a single point of view.""Maybe HAProxy could be more modular.""HAProxy is very weak in the logging and monitoring part and requires improvement.""Sometimes it's challenging to get through the log, and you need a log to understand what is going on. It isn't easy to map the logging with the documentation, and every time I read the log, I have to pull out the documentation to understand what I'm reading.""HAProxy could do with some good combination integrations."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Though functionality is high, its cost can be considered slightly higher than its competitors."
  • "The licensing pricing seems relatively easy enough to get your head around. I would advise anyone to ensure that you have a conversation with an F5 consultant before purchasing, as you would with most products."
  • "Take a look at the modules that you are going to use. Look into the best bundles for them."
  • "The only area that has room for improvement would be pricing, so its competitors do not have a say."
  • "If your IT budget is good, go for it."
  • "This product is costly from a licensing perspective considering its competitors."
  • "Check other vendors like Cisco, Citrix or A10 Networks. There are plenty in the market with which you can achieve same thing."
  • "Great product for the money. But they can get really expensive, so get what meets your needs."

  • "HAProxy is free software. There are optional paid products (support/appliances)."
  • "The price is well worth it. HAProxy Enterprise Edition paid for itself within months, simply due to the resiliency it brings. It was a bit more expensive than we were originally interested in paying, but we are thankful we chose to go with HAProxy."
  • "Very good value for the money. One of the simplest licensing schemes in this category of products."
  • "Test/lab virtual machines can be installed without a licence. They can't be used for performance testing but otherwise behave like production nodes."
  • "If you don't have expertise then go with the licensed version. Otherwise, open-source is the best solution."
  • "We use NGINX as well. However, because the health checks are a paid feature, I like to avoid it whenever possible."
  • "I think that the pricing is very fair, I would definitely recommend buying the Enterprise license."
  • "The only cost is for the image manager, who is responsible for uploading the image, and that is trivial."

    Reviews from Real Users

Having the right load balancing solution – which is what HAProxy is – and protection in place gives organizations peace of mind.” - Nathanel S., Platform Architect at SES

“I use HAProxy for individuals who can not buy low balancers. I built NFV in a box and send individuals a pathway into an HAProxy VM. The setup was not difficult; it usually takes a day to complete for a VPC. When it comes to pricing, HAProxy is free.” - Nasir O., Network & Cloud Architect at Koala Compute Inc.
