We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature is the interface, which is very user friendly. We are utilizing most of the features, like content filtering. The firewall is powerful.""The most valuable feature of FortiGate is FortiView which provides proactive monitoring.""SSL-VPN is very useful for us and has been very reliable.""The user interface (UI) is very, very good.""Allows for firewall rules to be programmed and named in a way that makes it “readable”""The VPN is the most valuable feature.""The most valuable feature of Fortinet FortiGate is URL filtering.""The solution is very easy to understand. It's not overly complex."

"There is a lot of information available about routers and how to configure Huawei Routers right now.""When we started, the connection was amazing for the 100G between the switches and the co-switch. What the students typically use for school is a maximum is 40 so they now have faster technology.""The product is good, easy to manage , and works fine.""It is a robust and efficient solution.""The setup is simple.""The product is very reasonably priced.""The most valuable features for us are NAT, ATS, server capabilities, VPN tunneling, and management.""The configuration syntax makes it easy for us to configure the device and perform troubleshooting when needed."

Cons
"The debugging and troubleshooting has room for improvement.""They should improve the interface to make it more user-friendly.""Fortinet doesn't provide multiple virtual firewalls which would facilitate end users and customers.""The firmware needs improvement because there are bugs when a new release comes through. Sometimes, the configuration changes, and it's a bit harder to see where the fail is. The first time that you have the firmware, it tends to have some issues, and it's better to wait a bit to update the equipment.""The feedback that I have received is that the performance could be better, and the user experience is not as good compared to a previous solution we used. It could be more user-friendly. Of course, it still works fine for our operations.""It is stable, but its stability can be improved.""Cisco Meraki products are rising very quickly in the cloud and the connected era. Meraki products offer much better ROI, upgradability, and manageability.""I need user-behavior analytics, to find threat scenarios from inside the organization, insider attacks. That would be very helpful for us. In addition, I would like next-generation features for small and medium businesses. These businesses require UTM, all in one product. Fortinet must include it."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"They should include features like IPS for security and response.""If Huawei can use its own OEM processor, it could be a good step up for future use in the network devices.""The product’s performance could be better.""The internet service for enterprise bundle should be improved.""There is not much of a technical team for Huawei available in Pakistan as compared to Cisco with respect to very complex networks.""There isn't really any scalability potential.""The product's pricing could be better.""The solution's technical support could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."

I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main hang-ups will be with the VIP/load balancing and SSL. For some reason that completely escapes me, both of these vendors make getting valid certificates onto their boxes unnecessarily difficult -- the Fortinet appliances more so than the Sophos UTM appliances. At one point a Fortinet engineer had to write an entire manual on how to get an SSL certificate uploaded successfully on the 4.x firmware Sophos: The one feature that is missing (and this makes some amount of sense) from the Sophos appliance is BITS caching for updates. Other than that, Sophos offers a full replacement for TMG on UTM9. The XG platform also offers a replacement for the TMG; however, some of the rumblings about upcoming releases suggests that Sophos is going to give XG the Apple iOS treatment and "streamline" the interface...potentially cutting out/hiding some functionality. On the effectiveness of the NGFW, Sophos is mostly good but has a few issues blocking all pieces of an application. For instance, we had to build custom blocking rules for OpenVPN (the vpn was being used to bypass the content filter) because the default Application Control wasn't effectively blocking the application. Fortinet: If it… Read more →
