Q&A Highlights
Question: Which product do you prefer: Sophos XGS 2100 or Fortinet FortiGate 100F?
Answer: Alexandre makes good points. However, I believe you've started off putting yourself at a disadvantage by not specifying what your requirements are. All good IT decisions come from getting clear on requirements first, not This-product vs. That-product. If both products meet all your requirements (and perhaps that is implied by starting with just those two as the options) THEN go to price followed by additional nice-to-have features.

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Fortinet FortiGate protects against internet-based threats, both internal and external. It is scalable, stable, easy to use, and easy to install.""This solution has helped our organization by having strong functions and a reliable firewall.""The IPsec tunnels are very easily created, and quite interoperable with devices from other vendors.""The user interface is relatively easy. The devices are easy to deploy and figure out when you have experience with other security appliances.""The CLI is robust and powerful, enabling rapid, consistent changes via SSH.""The most important feature, normally for small business customers, is link load balancing.""Our project needs to link two sides through the internet. One of these was in Cairo and the other in another city. We used FortiGate as the integrating solution between the two locations, i.e. the Fortinet 30E & 100E.""The application control features, such as Facebook blocking and Spotify blocking, are the most valuable."

"All the features are valuable, in my opinion, but for us the most important features are the network security, application control, and web server protection. Sophos Sandstorm is another good feature off the top of my head.""The feature that I find most valuable is the synchronized security option where the endpoint talks to the firewall.""Sophos XGS's best features are its VPN and ATPR1 cert protection.""It's much faster than the previous firewall, so you can do the work faster.""The solution is stable.""The initial setup is very user-friendly because they have graphical user interface options and command line interface options. I would give the initial setup a rating of five out of five.""I like the Sophos UI. It interface has a more comfortable feel than the competitors.""Sophos XGS has contributed to the reduction of the overall security costs of our company's customers."

Cons
"A lack of integration between our data centers.""The license renewal process, annual renewal price, and the web application firewall features should be improved.""I don't like that anything more than very basic reporting is not included.""When we cluster the two Fortinet FortiGate boxes together we have some issues.""The UI could be improved.""There are problems with the custom reporting of the unique traffic. The data is there, but it is too difficult for us to extract.""The cloud features can be improved.""Some of the software stability could improve."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"Sometimes, we haven't received proper support. They couldn't find the solutions that we required. One thing that we need is an NTP server facility. The Sophos XGS device does not have this capacity or this feature.""The reporting could be better.""The solution could have a bit more functionality.""There are some issues with conversion and user roles when upgrading to Cyberoam.""It would be nice to have features like the network access control (NAC) that Cisco has for Identity Services Engine. In the next release, I would also like to see an increase in the performance of the processing units.""The price of Sophos XGS could improve, it is high.""They should customers who are facing issues with their product reviews; they found bots in it. If they can do their proper research and use the user analysis and testing, that would greatly help the clients.""Sophos XGS needs improvement with the threshold values. Other solutions have the capacity to handle more users."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "I live in Bolivia and the price of Sophos XGS is high. However, they have adjusted their price a little over the past while but the price could still be less expensive to be affordable."

  • "The price of the solution is reasonable and their target market is small to medium-sized companies."
  • "Sophos XGS is priced lower than some of its competitors, such as Fortinet"

I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main hang-ups will be with the VIP/load balancing and SSL. For some reason that completely escapes me, both of these vendors make getting valid certificates onto their boxes unnecessarily difficult -- the Fortinet appliances more so than the Sophos UTM appliances. At one point a Fortinet engineer had to write an entire manual on how to get an SSL certificate uploaded successfully on the 4.x firmware Sophos: The one feature that is missing (and this makes some amount of sense) from the Sophos appliance is BITS caching for updates. Other than that, Sophos offers a full replacement for TMG on UTM9. The XG platform also offers a replacement for the TMG; however, some of the rumblings about upcoming releases suggests that Sophos is going to give XG the Apple iOS treatment and "streamline" the interface...potentially cutting out/hiding some functionality. On the effectiveness of the NGFW, Sophos is mostly good but has a few issues blocking all pieces of an application. For instance, we had to build custom blocking rules for OpenVPN (the vpn was being used to bypass the content filter) because the default Application Control wasn't effectively blocking the application. Hi Rahul,

I'm an IT consultant, specializing in networking and firewalls. Actually, I'm implementing Fortigates 100F and Sophos XGS2100 in customers' infrastructures.

They are two big advantages for Sophos XGS:

    1) The second CPU XStream, dedicated to firewalling and UTM functions, like Web Filtering, Web Application Firewall, IPS, etc.: https://news.sophos.com/en-us/...

    2) The Sophos "Synchronized Security", interaction with the client protection, centralized in a cloud console: https://www.sophos.com/en-us/c...

With this Xstream processor (ASIC), an XGS2100 is more powerful than a Fortigate 100F...and no way with pricing, Sophos is cheaper.

    Regards,

Hi Rahul, I agree with the answers from Michael and Alexandre, the most important decision to take is to determine what your requirements are.

I have the Sophos XGS 2100 firewall in our customers' environment and its performance is much more powerful, for the reason of the Xstream processor that takes a little time to scan HTTPS protocols and apply TLS policies over the connections.

We have a lot of Sophos firewalls in the field. I agree to the answer from Alexandre. The Sophos Firewall is the more powerfull firewall. But maybe it's a good idea to explore the XGS 3100 because of the hardware like 10gbit.

    With kind regards,
