Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"When it comes to decision-making, the product is very useful and used in many departments since a lot of people prefer the reports to be generated by IBM Cognos.""This solution allows you to input a wide range of file formats.""The three IBM Cognos features I find the most valuable are Dynamic Cubes, PowerPlay, and Watson.""It has a very powerful edit feature which allows users to back out of changes (undo) without forcing them to recreate entire reports.""Dashboarding, reporting, and ad hoc reporting are the valuable features of IBM Cognos.""Mapbox integration for geospatial analytics down to longitude/latitude layers.""We are able to generate quality reports easily which allows us to decrease response time.""IBM Cognos improves the effectiveness of the sales team."

"Initial setup was very straightforward. Users can get up and running reporting on databases within minutes.""In my experience the scalability is good. You are able to increase users and add more data.""The way data is presented is very valuable. The amount of information that we can get at a glance is also valuable. You can then drill-down and see data from many different angles in the same chart by selecting certain things. Based on the selection, everything changes automatically. If we have four parameters in a particular item, when you select a parameter, the remaining charts on that page automatically change for that particular parameter.""It is a little easier at buildings charts and graphs than Tableau.""The product is intuitive and user-friendly.""The advantages of Microsoft Power BI stem from the fact that it is really easy to use. The drag and drop facilities provided by the product are good.""Microsoft B's beneficial features are that it is a Microsoft product and it is well known by the staff here in the company. It suited the available skills.""When we are introducing Microsoft BI to our clients, if they're familiar with Excel, the transition phase will be much easier for them. They can easily switch from Microsoft Excel to Microsoft BI. The core foundation or the base technology is the same in both tools. There are a few limitations in Microsoft Excel, and this is where Microsoft BI comes in."

Cons
"One thing that we really want is the ability to have data portrayed on an image. Cognos is not able to do it at the moment, and that's becoming a requirement from the business side: having an image and then plotting your dataset on top of the image as a map.""The solution's support could be better.""The charts and graphics are weak.""It would be better if it is was easier to implement without extensive training for it.""IBM Support can be slow at times, but they can usually deliver in a timely manner.""The high cost of a license makes it hard to scale up on a budget.""The technical support team’s response time is slow and needs to be improved.""Cognos charts are not as fast as those of the other tools, even with DQM (dynamic query mode)."

More IBM Cognos Cons →

"Microsoft BI typically connects to a database, often SQL Server, but it's also capable of connecting to multiple databases, pulling data from them, and allowing for data consolidation. You can then aggregate and generate dashboards and reports from this combined data. Personally, I wouldn't claim to have the expertise to suggest significant changes or additional features, as it functions quite well as is.""When I create measures, sometimes the error messages aren't clear. It makes me spend more time searching for solutions. I need the error messages to be more specific. So, I would like clearer error messages when creating measures.""If I have to update data automatically, where I have to pin the gateway, it doesn't update. There is a scheduled refresh functionality so that it refreshes automatically, but I find it very hard to make it work.""We would like improvements made to the paginated reports so that it produces quality similarly to SSRS.""The on-premises version lacks some technical features that are available with the Cloud version.""Some kind of expression wizard, where the user can build a complex expression without any knowledge of DAX, can be a good addition to the product.""It has limited performance capabilities in terms of connecting to large transactional databases, but it is fine for simple and quick queries from Excel spreadsheets or one table. The premium level is going to be more applicable for the higher transaction-level databases.""The solution struggles with large amounts of data."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "There is need to assess the purchase license accordingly so as to avoid audit penalties."
  • "The pricing and licensing policies are comparatively cheaper than other products in the market ."
  • "IBM Cognos offers competitive pricing similar to other BI vendors in the market."
  • "Pricing should be improved."
  • "The pricing of this product is meant for medium to large-scale enterprises."
  • "It is my understanding that the cost is very low. It's not very expensive."
  • "Cognos is super expensive compared to Tableau ($70/month) and Power BI ($20/month) — I think Cognos is roughly $200 a month."
  • "It is quite pricy. I think Microsoft BI is cheaper. Tableau might also be cheaper, but it also depends on the usage. If you have very many users, Cognos can be a problem. It could be cheaper than Tableau but not for so many users. If you have a few thousand users, Tableau, which is generally quite expensive, can be cheaper than Cognos."

    Reviews from Real Users

IBM Cognos stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Two major ones are its powerful analysis tool and its reporting capabilities.

Prasad B., a senior software engineer at a financial services firm, notes, “The product is a very good reporting tool and is very flexible. It allows for the users to get a scheduled report. We can receive automated reports as well. They are easy to schedule on a weekly or monthly basis. It is very fast. I mean in means of report output, it's very fast compared to the actual clients involved.”

Microsoft Power BI is a powerful tool for data analysis and visualization. This tool stands out for its ability to merge and analyze data from various sources. Widely adopted across different industries and departments, Power BI is instrumental in creating visually appealing dashboards and generating insightful business intelligence reports.
