We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Guardium does a great job of capturing data and having the ability of trying to pull it out and make sense of it. Using it for business applications is its biggest capability.""The most valuable feature for me, in my role as systems DBA, is the expediting of internal and external audits.""It protects sensitive data and blocks unauthorized access to the data.""It does not require our involvement to run it. It runs in the background and the people that do the reporting do so. The reports go to the directors who are in charge of the various data areas. It's pretty clean. Clearly there is some setup, but after you get it set up it just goes.""It has been very difficult to analyze all the network traffic with something else. Guardium provides that feature, it's heuristic. So we have rule-based algorithms in place to take care of that.""I think it scales pretty well. It can run on most of the database platforms currently out there. That is something we really like as a feature, because we try to hit everything in our environment to make sure we're meeting those regulations.""Satisfies audit requests, to give us an idea if anybody is accessing our privileged user IDs without our knowledge.""Provides a unified key management system to help simplify encryption key management."

"This solution acts as a complete data warehouse for our audit data.""Our client was scheduled to take a year and a half to set up compliance, but by deploying this product they were able to do the compliance reports within three months.""Technical support is perfect.""Our clients can see all of their past actions or the wrong activity done on the network. We can load the diagnostics for the business.""Oracle Audit Vault has a lot of great features, but what I find most valuable is the database firewall.""The feature that I have found most valuable is that it can help us secure our databases.""It has reduced the stress of collecting database event logs in silos from each database.""Out-of-the-box policies ensure our compliance with standards like SOX, ISO 27001, and so on."

Cons
"I would like to see streamlining of some of the agent features, some of the patches; make it a little bit more user-friendly on the documentation.""The price of this solution is quite high for smaller organizations, so they should release a version that is affordable for small and medium-sized businesses.""It was difficult implementing it, configuring it, getting it up and running and in production. However, since then, I believe it has stabilized.""If IBM Guardium Data Protection could find a way to not have a lot of coding and development required to get the solution up and running it would be an advantage. The information of the agent could improve, which is necessary for us to monitor the databases would be a great benefit.""Can't be used for a NoSQL database, which is limiting.""Deployment process is very complicated as you need to now all advanced parameters. Almost not possible to figure out for yourself.""More automation, user guides, and tips would make this solution better.""The deployment is complex and requires expertise to deploy."

"Currently, you need two servers: one for Audit Vault and one for the firewall. If they can combine them into one server, it will be great because it is costly to have two servers. It will also make its installation easier. I have heard that in the new version, there will be only one server for both.""Some of our customers were asking about latency when the application wants to get to the database.""An easy, friendly user interface would be nice to have, since this would enable administrators to identify important events with a prompt response.""Stability could be improved, we have had some challenges""One feature that is missing is the ability to have a secret server that is always encrypted.""They should simplify the integration and work with different vendors and mechanisms.""Customized reporting is something that we are struggling with, and it is quite tough for us.""The performance of Oracle Audit Vault could be improved, especially in handling large data collections and generating reports on time."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We haven't talked much about pricing and licencing. But it is not cheap for sure"
  • "I would suggest to review the type of data, need for security, and if the organizational structure needs the options IBM Guardium provides."
  • "If you are researching this type of solution, work with IBM."
  • "Guardium has not saved us time or money."
  • "The biggest challenge is the cost associated with the product, and the cost of maintaining. Everything is not translated directly to the benefits we see. There are benefits, yes, but if I were writing the check, would I buy Guardium? No."
  • "Guardium won mostly because of our scope and scale. It was able to perform at the scale that we wanted to use it. "
  • "The price of Guardium is higher than the main competitor, Imperva. In addition, it's complex as the calculation of the licensing is done by Processor Value Unit (PVU). However, before purchasing a DAP solution, it is important to analyze specific points to evaluate the cost-benefit of each tool. For example: Does the environment to be monitored have mainframes? If so, it's a point for Guardium. If not, a point for Imperva. Note: IBM is looking into a new licensing policy and reducing the price of Guardium."
  • "One of the deployments that I know of had three databases, and the yearly fees are approximately $50,000 USD."

  • "The licensing cost is about $360,000, annually."
  • "This solution is definitely not expensive, and it is a small fraction of the overall database licensing costs."
  • "Oracle can be an expensive solution depending on the options and user needs."
  • "For the bank, the license was $48,000 last time. That was the licensing for the bank on just one license."
