We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It has helped to minimize the risk and scale services at large in virtually no time.""The fact that you can do any Linux distribution is great. You can try out any Linux distribution, even some of the more obscure ones, and they are always keeping them up-to-date. As soon as a new distribution comes out, it is on the platform pretty much the same day, which I find really helpful.""The creation of instances is very good, as is their interface which is not complex and is easy to use. With the dashboard it is easy to create a new instance and add your favorite things. You can add Debian, Ubuntu, or CentOS, or any flavor of operating system. You can select the RAM for your instance as well.""The fact that you can get a person on the phone has just been fantastic.""Generally speaking, I have not found any faults using Linode. For what we wanted, they provided a complete solution.""The virtual machine configuration tool is very helpful for setting up a new server or for modifying an existing server.""The solution integrates easily.""The simplicity by which you can handle your inventory is one of the things I like the most."

"Autoscaling is an excellent feature that makes it very simple to scale our applications as required.""The banking transactions, inquiries, and account opening have been the most valuable.""The software is user-friendly and straightforward to use, which is favorable to a developer.""The best feature is the management for the port life cycle, which automatically recycles, pulls, and scales up and down based on needs and requests.""The tool's most valuable features include high availability, scalability, and security. Other features like advanced cluster management, advanced cluster security, and Red Hat Quay make it powerful for businesses. It also comes with features like OpenShift Virtualization.""They have built on top of Kubernetes. Most of the Kubernetes latest technology is already supported by the solution.""The platform is easy to scale as it supports Windows worker node.""More tools are available in OpenShift Container Platform to maintain and manage the clusters."

Cons
"The product must improve its security.""Our primary concern is always the latency.""I don't know how all of their services work, but my understanding is that they're not offering the entry-level machine for someone who just wants to own their own web page.""Because they are a smaller company, they do not have, for example, all of the ways for authentication that Amazon or Azure has.""It would be nice if they had more data centers in Latin America.""I would like to see more seamless integration with backup, although it's pretty easy to do.""I would like Linode (without cluttering things) to provide some type of DevOps workflow where people are configuring their pipelines from running their tests and deploying to their test server. Once approved by clicking a button, it just gets deployed to production. I would like something like Azure DevOps, which we use for large applications, and would be something nice to have in Linode.""There is no notification from the company regarding upgrades."

More Linode Cons →

"The complexity of the installation could be reduced. While we got the necessary support, the instructions could be clearer.""OpenShift Container Platform needs to work on integrations.""OpenShift needs to improve their container storage.""It can take 10 to 15 minutes to deploy a microservice. The CI/CD process takes a long time, and if it's because of OCP, that is something that can be changed.""It has an option to install OpenShift without connecting it to the Internet. We tried this, but it was very hard. We couldn't manage to use that option. We wanted to use it offline for installations, updates, upgrades, etc., but we didn't find the offline installation and updates easy. This could be better.""With the recent trend of cloud-native, fully managed serverless services, I don't see much documentation about how a customer should move from on-prem to the cloud, or what is the best way to do a lift-and-shift. Even if you are on AWS OCP, which is self-managed infra services, and you want to use the ROSA managed services, what is the best way to achieve that migration? I don't see documentation for these kinds of use cases from Red Hat.""The setup process is not great.""In my experience, the issues are not always simply technical. They do stem from technical challenges, but they struggle with the topic of adoption. When you encounter all of the customer pull, there are normally several tiers of your client pop that can adopt either the fundamental features or a little more advanced ones. The majority of the time, the challenge is determining how to drive adoption, how to sell the product to the customer, and how much time they can spend to really utilize those advanced features. If we get into much more detail, but this is from my perspective as the platform engineer and not the end customer, the ability of the end user to be able to debug potential issues with their application That is arguably the most important, let's say, work throughput in my area."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I pay just over £20 per month and have done so ever since I started eight years ago, which to me is good value."
  • "The pricing model is very simple. I like the simplicity of it, starting at $5, then doubling as it goes up from there. That is a brilliant idea, and it is not complex at all. It is about as dead simple as you can imagine. So, if you want to double what you have, then you double your price, pay the money, and reboot. It is done. It's that simple. You can't beat that."
  • "One key difference is that pricing is very hard to come by and to understand with all the bigger companies. Their pricing models are so weird and it's hard to figure out exactly how much I am going to pay for this kind of service. Everything is piecemeal. With Linode, it's simple and straightforward. You know exactly what you will have to pay at the end of the day."
  • "Compared to other service providers, like AWS and Google, the cost of services are much less and more affordable. We are saving about 90 percent by going with Linode versus other cloud providers."
  • "The pricing model is very simple. If you have very small applications, you can use the plan which costs $5 per month. That gives you 50 GB of memory and almost 1 GB of RAM. If you need more than you have to select the next plan which is $10 per month, which has about 70 GB of data and 2 GB of RAM."
  • "The value for the price is really good."
  • "Pricing is very good and flexible, according to the resources required."
  • "Being that they are small, their prices are slightly higher than the large providers like Amazon if you compare raw computing power."

  • "OpenShift with Red Hat support is pretty costly. We have done a comparison between AWS EKS (Elastic Kubernetes Services) which provides fully managed services from AWS. It's built on open-source-based Kubernetes clusters and it is much cheaper compared to Red Hat, but it is a little expensive compared to ECS provided by AWS."
  • "It depends on who you're talking to. For a large corporation, it is acceptable, other than the significant infrastructure requirements. For a small organization, it is in no way suitable, and we'd go for Amazon's container solution."
  • "The license to use the OpenShift Container Platform is free. If you are capable with Java you can modify it."
  • "The price is slightly on the higher side. It is something that can be worked on because most of the businesses now have margins."
  • "The pricing is a bit more expensive than expected."
  • "We paid for Cloud Pak for integration. It all depends on how many VMs or how many CPUs you are using. They do the licensing based on that."
  • "We currently have an annual license renewal."
  • "It largely depends on how much money they earn from the application being deployed; you don't normally deploy an app just for the purpose of having it. You must constantly look into your revenue and how much you spend every container, minute, or hour of how much it is working."
