We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable features of Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics are the user experience because it is easy to make analyses, load different databases, and different resources. Our end users can do the analysis by themselves without IT supervising. This is a great aspect of the solution, it's better for our environment.""I have not used the technical support from Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics, but I worked with the developers at Microsoft who were top-notch.""I think the most valuable component is that pipelines are built into it and then the feature that you can mirror a cosmos BB for analytics.""The most valuable feature of Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics is the pipeline that is the ETL tool. It's very well designed and is overall very good. We usually don't use the ETL tool in Databricks, but we use the ETL tool in this solution.""The pricing seems to be quite fair.""Technical support is okay in terms of the help they provide.""We also like governance. It looks at what the requirements are for the company to identify the best way to ensure compliance is met when you move to the cloud.""We find the serverless tool to be the most valuable feature ."

"Vertica has a few features that I like. From an architecture standpoint, they have separated compute and storage. So you have low-cost object storage for primary storage and the ability to have several sub-clusters working off the same ObjectStore. So it provides workload isolation.""Vertica is easy to use and provides really high performance, stability, and scalability.""I don't need any special hardware. I can use commodity hardware, which is nice to have in a commercial solution.""Partition and join back to node are easy and simple for DBAs.""The Vertica architecture means it can process/ingest data in parallel to reporting and analyzing because of its in-memory Write-Optimized Storage sitting alongside the analytics optimized Read-Optimized Storage.""I enjoy the cybersecurity and backup features.""The performance is very good and the aggregate records are fast.""The feature of the product that is most important is the speed. I needed a columnar database, and its speed is what it's built to do, and so that's what really does differentiate Vertica from its competitors."

Cons
"I would like to see better integration with Active Directory, because we have had problems, and we still do.""Synapse makes it easy to integrate and onboard data from other Microsoft and Azure sources. The interface is familiar because we were using Azure Data Factory before Synapse. It made the transition even easier because the Synapse interface is exactly the same.""The linked services can be improved. We can create dynamic linked services to access a lot of databases but only those of the same type. For example, I can use the same linked services to access 11 SQL databases. However, if I have 11 SQL databases and five Oracle databases, I need two dynamic linked services. I cannot do it with only one linked service. The UI also needs to be improved. When I have used Azure Synapse for programming with PySpark, Scala, or .NET, for example, the UI has been unstable. If I open two notebooks for programming, one notebook will queue the session of the other.""Microsoft should develop an interface to make it easier to shift from on-premise to the cloud.""The cost of the solution has room for improvement.""The product could be more feature-rich.""Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics can improve by increasing the size of the files that we can load on the platform. We have some files that are too large to be loaded and it would be a benefit to us if the limit was increased. Additionally, the way we use the tool for generating reports can be made better. They should add some drag-and-drop rules without the need of programming these rules using some programming language. It would be helpful if we did not need someone that was technically advanced to be able to do it with, such as someone with no IT background. Having a reporting tool without code would be great.""I would like to see version control implemented into the data warehouse."

More Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics Cons →

"There are a lot of limitations within this product and it makes things extremely hard for developers. It lacks Stored Procedure, packages, and triggers like other RDBMs.""Performance of management of metadata layer (database catalog) needs improvement. We still have to have smaller customers on PostgreSQL; Vertica cannot manage thousands of schemata.""In my opinion, Vertica's documentation could be improved. Currently, there is not enough documentation available to gain a comprehensive understanding of the platform.""Vertica seems to scale well, except for one use case where you are on a multi-node cluster. For example, if you had a nine-node cluster, one node goes down, then the eight nodes don't scale, because the absence of the node is very apparent, which is a problem. If you have nine nodes or multiple nodes, the whole idea is that if one of those nodes goes down, then you should not see an impact on the system if you have enough capacity. Even though we have enough capacity, you can still see the impact of the one node going down.""We are looking for a cheaper deployment for the solution. Although we did a lot of benchmarks, like Redshift. We tried Redshift, it didn't work. It didn't work out for us as well.""I would personally like to see extended developer tooling suited to Vertica – think published PowerDesigner SQL dialect support.""Vertica can improve automation and documentation. Additionally, the solution can be simplified.""Limitations in group by projections is where I would like to see an improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The price of this solution could be improved."
  • "The pricing is okay. You can pay as you go."
  • "This solution starts at €1000.00 a month for just the basics and can go up to €300,000.00 per month for the fastest version."
  • "When we are not using this solution we can simply shut it down saving us costs, which is a nice advantage."
  • "The licensing fees for this solution are on a pay-per-use basis, and not very expensive."
  • "All of the prices are available online."
  • "Our license is very expensive"
  • "They are cost aggressive, and it integrates well with other Microsoft tools."

  • "Work with a vendor, if possible, and take advantage of more aggressive discounts at mid-fiscal year (April) and fiscal year-end (October)."
  • "It's free up to three nodes and 1TB, and then get in contact with their sales guys."
  • "Start with license per 1TB. Starting from hundreds of TB there is unlimited licensing to be considered. Move historical data to HDFS/S3 which are significantly cheaper or even free."
  • "The first TB is free and you can use all the Vertica features. After 1TB you have to pay for licensing. The product is worth it, but be aware of this condition, and plan. The compression ratio is explained in the documentation."
  • "I think it's starting to get a little expensive. Open source products are starting to get more robust, so I think that's something that they need to start looking at in terms of licensing."
  • "Read the fine print carefully."
  • "It is fast to purchase through the AWS Marketplace."
  • "The pricing and licensing depend on the size of your environment and the zone where you want to implement."
