Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"This solution allows us to quickly drill down when there are issues.""We use Oracle Enterprise Manager for a lot of services like ERP and PLM.""The most valuable feature is the monitoring because it's very useful for checking and troubleshooting compared with other products, like Nagios for example, that have some interaction with Oracle.""We use Oracle Enterprise Manager as a tool to monitor Oracle products.""The most valuable features of Oracle Enterprise Manager are the data guide and online monitoring.""It is a scalable solution. So far, my company has not faced any issues with the scalability part of the solution.""The best part is the efficient database performance monitoring and the ability to take actions directly from there.""The solution is easy to use and has good performance."

"I find Toad easy to use and I love the Workspace feature, which allows me to set up projects so that I can open SQL files applicable to what I am working on at any particular time.""The schema browser is the most valuable feature. The way it presents the objects in our database.""The best product for working with Oracle databases for support, checking and loading data.""Toad has a lot of features that are very useful, fast, and well developed.""The most valuable feature is the navigation within the UI, where you can right-click on an object in an SQL query and go right to it, versus going through all of the menus to find what you are looking for.""A quite simple feature that I have not encountered elsewhere is the "Make Code" feature. I can easily export a complex SQL statement to a programming language. This is a great timesaver as I do not have to type in all of the escape/concatenation characters just to create a SQL statement in C# or C++.""The product's most valuable features are UI and monitoring.""It is very easy to manage all of the objects."

Cons
"Better mobile access would be useful.""The deployment is not straightforward.""The tool's pricing is costly.""In my opinion, rather than a younger DBA, think the user interface could be improved.""Oracle Enterprise Manager could improve the monitoring types and the graphics.""Technical support could be faster.""We could use it but definitely with some effort we can streamline much better and sometimes some box here and there, like 13C you have to really wait, but there are great features. Just have to make sure it is a stable product.""I would say mostly backup and recovery, through the Enterprise Manager. Or any corruptions, to be able to fix them through Enterprise Manager."

More Oracle Enterprise Manager Cons →

"I would like to see an improvement in the performance because opening the browser and the editor should be faster.""Toad for Oracle does not have a particular resolution within the application.""Improvement wise, for the user it should show the minimum features on the screen and not all the features. Toad has a lot of features, but most users will use only 5 or 10 based on their role. Nobody needs all the features, and they should provide the option to choose only the required features. Only minimum requirements should be enabled by default. When all the features are shown, the performance is not good; it loads slowly and has hundreds of popups and unnecessary questions.""There should also be a better "cancel query" option as sometimes one cancels a query, but then it still might run for a long time, and then one has to crash Toad in order to cancel the query.""There may be an issue with processing limitations but this cannot be confirmed as a problem with the product or with the newest releases.""Sometimes it works in some areas, but in others, it doesn't. Like when you copy, you find that it's blank and doesn't copy anything. So, there are some objects that do copy, and sometimes they don't.""Once in a while, I may encounter a memory exception and have to abort the application. On a few occasions, the file that stores the saved connections for the New Connection window will become corrupt and I will lose all of my saved connections. I am not sure if that is a Windows or TOAD issue, but it has happened to all of my developers at some point or another.""There could be a tool for automated SQL query functioning."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is part of Real Application Testing, so no new investment is necessary for clients who already are already using RAT."
  • "As with all Oracle products, care should be taken when using any features to ensure that they do not activate licensed features that have not been paid for."
  • "The basic functions are free. You only pay license fees for advanced features."
  • "The pricing is very high."
  • "We are satisfied with the pricing."
  • "There is only the standard licensing fee. There are no other costs."
  • "Evaluate your requirements carefully. Elaborate DR and HA setup of OEM can become expensive."
  • "Be careful to only enable the packs for which you have a license as this is an issue we see time and again."

  • "My advice is to try to use the three-year maintenance agreement if possible."
  • "Toad for Oracle has a relatively high cost compared to other similar tools."

    Reviews from Real Users

Oracle Enterprise Manager stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Several major ones are its central management and monitoring and its reporting capabilities

Robin C., head of Oracle Exadata Centre of Excellence at Tata Consultancy Services, writes, "The database performance monitoring features are very useful and allow us to quickly zero in on DB-related issues. Exadata storage server and Infiniband switches can be viewed from the GUI in OEM which cannot be done in other tools. The ability to deploy metric extensions makes this tool extensible for our custom monitoring also."

PeerSpot users note the effectiveness of these features. A database manager at a tech services company notes, “The solution's most valuable aspect is the fact that it is embedded with the Oracle database and Oracle's engineering system, its extra data, and analytics.  They have plug-ins that are very helpful. Due to the infrastructure's size, the introduction they offer is very, very useful. It helps with an overall understanding of the product. They have a very nice graphical user interface. The monitoring is good. We can capture the SQL tune from us. With Oracle Enterprise Managers, we can see the rich performance tuning.”

With Toad for Oracle, you'll reduce costs and risks by easily ensuring the health and performance of your Oracle Cloud Platform and on-premises databases. ... On the operations side, you can automate administration tasks and proactively manage your databases while embracing performance optimization and risk mitigation.
