We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We can view the server activities, including issues in the process, with a single click.""The product provides a nice end-user experience.""I like Business iQ the most, so far. It has great analytics configurations and I can get real-time updates. We have eCommerce releases every week. So the one use case that I use Business iQ is to compare before and after release performance using AppDynamics.""It is a stable solution. Stability-wise, I don't see any problems in the solution...The solution's technical support was good.""The platform is reliable in identifying the core system issues.""The solution offers great visibility that allows you to track where errors originated.""What I like most about AppDynamics Server Monitoring is that it's easy to manipulate and easy to implement. All solutions have the same features, but what sets AppDynamics Server Monitoring apart is that it's really quick to implement. AppDynamics Server Monitoring has a great interface. As a developer, it doesn't matter whether it's SolarWinds, Dynatrace, or any APM you're using, but it would matter to the customer. A product must be easy to manipulate or use, for example, AppDynamics Server Monitoring, for the customer, but for developers like my team, there's no pressure, even if a solution requires coding.""The auto-discovery of the logs is the most valuable feature. It requires minimal configuration, we just need to set up on once and it automatically detects through the code."

"The most valuable feature is the dashboard, where I can have a single screen that provides a summary for hundreds of servers.""Nagios XI is a simple monitoring tool with performance management.""The ability to set up templates and groups of checks, as well as customize the checks themselves.""You want to monitor a specific metric that nobody else has? You can do it even with the most basic of scripting skills, and you can always share it with the vast community of Nagios Exchange.""The solution has a lot of plugins and scripts integrated with it.""BPI: It allows defining peripherals to map business criticality for efficient monitoring, as required.""Since this is an open source technology, if we are capable of writing the plugins in any scripting language, this product allows us to monitor anything we want.""The most valuable feature is the monitoring of processes."

Cons
"The one thing that I find it difficult in using AppDynamics is, for any new user, it's not easy for him or her to configure the transactions in AppDynamics because the UI is pretty complex. The configuration is pretty complex for a new, fresh user. They can make the UI simpler, that'll be very helpful for anyone to configure their website in AppDynamics.""I would like the ability to choose from some pre-defined dashboards and reports because as it is now, you have to define them separately for each implementation.""I could not find a user-friendly interface for querying, and analytics sometimes gives the wrong results...I feel that analytics could have been better in searching and running the analytical queries.""The solution could be more mobile friendly.""The product’s dashboard could be more easy to implement.""AppDynamics Server Monitoring has room for improvement in terms of pricing. If the price could be cheaper, it would be great for both the customer and the integrator. What I'd like to see in the next release of AppDynamics Server Monitoring is a better dashboard for the customer. The dashboard should be more interactive.""In the next release, I would like to see the configuration of the data and more support for new applications. It should support new languages.""The configuration is tricky and requires a lot of tools."

More AppDynamics Server Monitoring Cons →

"The reporting structure could be more streamlined.""It can be quite difficult to know which drivers and agents to use when setting up.""It is really difficult to integrate Nagios XI with another system to generate logs and alert our management of failures in security infrastructure.""We often need to develop custom plugins to get Nagios to work the way we want it to work because the features we need are not always available in Nagios.""The PNP4Nagios plugin not working easily with XI is an issue for me, because some open source monitoring plugins do not work out of the box. But in the end, you learn to live with it.""Technical support is an area that needs improvement. It is not available 24/7.""Nagios XI can improve network and hardware monitoring, these parameters should be simplified to allow usage for monitoring. Additionally, if there was automatic reporting it would be helpful.""I would like to see support for notification via SMS."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "My understanding is that the price of this solution is quite high, compared to other products."
  • "The pricing for AppDynamics Server Monitoring in Africa and the Middle East is too expensive, so it's very hard to sell it to customers. If there could be different pricing or package for the region, that would be great. My company pays for the license of AppDynamics Server Monitoring on a per-agent, per-server basis. It's $700 to $1000 per server, and it's paid annually. My company is on a subscription model for the solution. On a scale of one to five, where one is expensive and five is cheap, my rating for the price of AppDynamics Server Monitoring is a two."
  • "The solution has a high cost."
  • "AppDynamics Server Monitoring is a very expensive product, but if you negotiate well, you get value for money...My company used to make early payments toward the licensing costs of the solution, but now my company has opted for a different licensing model."
  • "The tool is expensive."

  • "The pricing is really cost efficient. The licensing is perpetual and can be renewed very easily."
  • "You can grow into the higher-priced scale as they learn how to utilize the features for Nagios XI."
  • "For the cost of the commercial product and support, and taking into account the open source characteristics of it, I believe it is difficult to a better value."
  • "We are using the free version of this solution."
  • "This solution is very expensive, at approximately $5,000 USD when I purchased it, which is why I haven't upgraded my version in several years."
  • "The licensing fees for this solution are approximately $3,000 USD per year."
  • "The pricing is high with separate licensing for the product and support."
  • "Nagios Core does not have any payment, but Nagios XI requires payment for the license."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
