We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Well documented SQL views and customizable reports, together with scripts and workflows provides ability to automate processes and ensure proper controls are in place.""The most important feature is that everything can be controlled using a single console.""Restoring is very fast. In testing, I did a restore for a single item from a mailbox. Within a minute, I had the message back in my mailbox. So, it didn't take hours or days. Obviously, there will be a limit. If we suddenly go into DR and have to restore five terabytes of emails for people, then it will take a couple of days, which would be acceptable. For general usage, where we have to do the odd restore, we have never had issues. It happens within minutes.""Scalability, as well as stability, are a couple of important parts of this solution.""Not everyone has agents for everything and Commvault has agents for most products. It's the most complete.""The email archiving feature is very smooth and better than others.""It runs all the tests and emails us the reports. We take daily, weekly, and monthly snapshots, and I integrate the storage snapshot scripts with the Commvault workflow. The Commvault workflow runs all the scripts and sends us the reports. It also features cloud-side reports and workflows. Commvault has many tools for backing up, restoring, and archiving things, but we use another service for our archives.""The cloud integration is a massive win for us, giving us a single backup service for all of our on-premise and cloud systems."

"Data Guard also improved because customers with an active Data Guard license want to reduce the I/O in a production environment. Some application complaints to it for Oracle reporting purposes. It has a production environment that needs to be enhanced.""Oracle Data Guard is scalable. I rate it a ten out of ten.""If you have a problem with your primary site and can't access your primary database, you can continue working with the database that you have as standby on the other site, by changing its role to primary.""Oracle Data Guard is a free solution. When you apply for Enterprise Manager, it comes for free with the solution.""We have not encountered any major challenges with replication. We were able to achieve near-real-time replication. Also, with the switchover failover, we were not getting any technical issues. It's a pretty stable product.""Oracle Data Guard has a nice feature called the DataGuard snapshot to open the solution in the read-write mode and make some changes to the database.""Technical support is very good. If at any time we write a ticket, we get the appropriate answer on time.""The solution has been stable so far."

Cons
"The solution requires constant attention. Commvault is very complex. We are constantly making adjustments and working through hotfixes, updates, and issues.""The pricing could be more flexible in terms of licensing.""Support could improve and the initial configuration would be easier with assistance from a professional engineer.""I would like to see a more user-friendly GUI.""They reply to the support portal weekly, but there are some delays.""The deployment process should be simplified because it is not something that just anybody can do.""The main area for improvement is that we sometimes experience negative effects from their updates. If they had a larger test area for their updates, that would help.""Sometimes, we have a performance issue with the backup speed. So, that has to be rectified and improved."

"Overall, there are some operational issues that need to be dealt with.""For Italian medium-sized companies, the main challenge lies in the cost associated with licenses.""We would like to be able to see the date time stamp when you execute DGMGRL commands.""I think it would be great to have a graphical interface assistant (like DBCA, ASMCA, NETCA, etc.) for initial configuration, monitoring, configuring Oracle Data Guard Broker and all the Data Guard Broker commands, without needing Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control installed.""The pricing of the solution is quite high. They should do what they can to bring it down so that it is more reasonable for customers like us.""The implementation is complex for anyone who's jumping into it without any experience. It's all command-line driven implementations. For some, that's a turn-off.""The initial setup is complex.""They may need to include the monitoring and the alerting part in Data Guard."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."

  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."
