We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature of the solution is the flexibility in configuration and the setup.""It is a very well-thought-out solution with great virtualization. A good option we have is mapping a storage LUN onto an ESX cluster. That way, in case a particular ESX is down, it can migrate (using vMotion) to another host in the cluster, resulting in high-availability.""The ability to converge a lot of different data and platforms into a single common platform, then scale horizontally and vertically.""It is extremely stable and well-supported because of the leadership and partnerships put in place.""Our footprint is lower than it used to be.""For anyone who needs the flexibility of moving around profiles from physical device to physical device, it really adds an additional layer of virtualization.""It ships in a rack, so it is very easy to deploy.""The solution’s unified support for the entire stack provides one stop shopping."

"The flexibility is the most advantageous aspect of the solution. Our system has a very big environment. Due to this, the replication and backup operation is not an easy task. We prefer HPE SimpliVity modules in our environment, even when we have some different cases in operations.""Consolidation and duplications features.""The tool's most valuable features are stability and scalability.""The user interface, reporting, and management are good, and we are quite happy with the performance.""The solution's most valuable feature is its ability to restore lost machines. Essentially its high availability capabilities are extremely valuable to us.""The most valuable features of HPE ConvergedSystem are scalability and resilience.""The solution's technical support was good. I rate the technical support a ten out of ten.""The most valuable features of the solution are the flexibility and the availability of the machines."

Cons
"I'd like to see a little bit simpler management pane. Using UCS Director to front everything is good but for a lot of that upper mid-market, it's probably a little bit of overkill for what they need. They just want a nice, simply portal to go through and see what's going on. So if there was something that was middle of the road, it would be well received.""We don't see the much DR capability within the FlexPod so for that, we have to maintain our own DR capability with DSRM.""One touch upgrades would be nice.""We would like to have more monitoring and reporting, because today some of the reporting, and if you purchase it separately is expensive. We use OnCommand Unified Manager today, which is great, but we are looking for more of that.""I'd like to see some more Ansible integration for automation purposes. We automate everything else with Ansible, so it would be great if we could automate our FlexPod with Ansible as well.""One of the things that I've wanted would be availability of a health status, similar to Active IQ from my converged platform, on an app. I have dashboards so I can see the health of the system when I'm in the office, but when I'm not in the office I can't.""They should have an easier user interface to get it up and running.""The GPU based VDA solutions could use improvement."

"HPE ConvergedSystem needs to improve its price.""Pricing is an area of concern in the solution where improvements are required.""There is some scope for improvement in support. The response time could be better.""I would like to see monitoring solutions included, as well as brand support.""It could be enhanced by improving the built-in backup solution.""The tool has shortcomings in its performance monitoring part.""HPE ConvergedSystem needs to improve its management. I would like the tool to add cloud management features so that the system can be accessed anywhere from the cloud.""The MTG inside HP could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Pricing and licensing is very affordable from a FlexPod perspective."
  • "It seems very cost effective once it's in place, and it's easy to expand and easy to add capacity without a lot of extra money."
  • "If your company really needs to be up 100% of the time, and you need to do a private data center, I don't know if I could realistically actually recommend another blueprint."
  • "Anytime that you are buying any storage make sure you understand storage. Do not just buy storage based on what somebody sells you in terms of IO or throughput."
  • "Buy storage based on the solutions you need, the technologies you need, and what will make your life a lot easier down the road."
  • "As a whole, it is inexpensive, and it uses the least amount of parts."
  • "Storage is very expensive. To buy MIC cards and additional storage either on-prem or in the cloud, the IT department does not have money for it, so you need a more niche product or a more flexible way to store your data. That is the benefit that you get from this product."
  • "We purchased the solution through CDW. They are a partner and knowledgeable."
  • More FlexPod XCS Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Pricing is good. We have not calculated what hyper-converged infrastructure has brought us but I think there has to be some lower cost for us, compared to the public cloud. Obviously, there would be a lower cost, probably by more than half."
  • "This is an expensive system and not every customer has the kind of budget to support it."
  • "The pricing is sensitive."
  • "This is an expensive solution."
  • "My company has a five year contract for HPE ConvergedSystem. The contracts depend on companies and sometimes it can be three years. The solution is worth its price."
  • "There are some extra costs in addition to the licensing costs for the yearly maintenance from professional third-party services."
  • "The tool's licensing costs are yearly."
  • "The pricing is competitive. Not a major problem. We have a subscription model."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
