Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The Fortinet FortiGate local partners were good. I did not have direct contact with Fortinet support.""The technical support is great.""One of the valuable features is a standardized OS.""The security features that they have are quite good. On top of that, their licensing model is quite nice where they don't charge you anything for the SD-WAN functionality for the firewall.""We purchased Fortinet because of the pricing, its functionality, because it met our requirements, and the total cost of ownership over five years was quite reasonable. In the market, Fortinet is rated quite well.""It's very good and very stable for businesses. It works very well.""Fortinet FortiGate is easy to use.""The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are the different types of profiling. It has been the most effective for me. The WAF and the antivirus profile are the most effective in network protection."

"The scalability of the solution is good.""The solution has improved my organization because I can see what traffic is happening and I can use it to block and prevent attacks.""This solution is quick and easy to configure.""Our organization's main concern is stability, and this is a stable solution.""It's an easy, straightforward management platform to use.""I like that it works fine. Stormshield is a very good solution.""A very robust product.""I can see what traffic is going on. I can easily block any programs from attacks."

Cons
"I would like to see better pricing in the next release, as well as a simplification of the installation.""In terms of what could be improved, the SD-WAN is quite difficult, because if you install the new box, 15 is okay, but if you change from an old configuration, if there is already configuration and a policy when you change to SD-WAN, you must change the whole policy that you see in the interface.""The biggest "gotcha" is that if the client purchases what they call the UTM shared bundle, which has unified threat management on both, it's not as easy to manage if you have more than one firewall.""A lack of integration between our data centers.""With FortiGate, the main complaint that I have heard is about the technical support.""Fortinet FortiGate can improve by integrating the web application firewall and the DDoS protection part of the solution. Having a WAF feature, web application firewall, and proxy together would be a good benefit.""The user interface could be improved.""FortiGate should have a better way of detecting and managing the system memory because otherwise if the memory is too low, a system restart is required."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"Not all the fields are activated yet and we were informed that it will take at least one month.""A more user-friendly interface would be helpful.""This is not a next-generation firewall.""The filtering configuration could be better. We have some difficulties with the filtering configuration and the filter extension. It's not that easy. It's not that straightforward. In the next release, I would like to see a reporting system. Stormshield doesn't have any tutorials on how to do the configuration and things like that. They just have documentation on the website. If you want to configure, for example, Cisco or Fortinet, you can find tutorials on YouTube. They show you how to configure the features, and so on. In Stormshield, there is nothing on social media or the internet on how to configure different things. The lack of documentation or the lack of material makes it difficult for others to adopt this solution.""It could be better if it were more user-friendly. It's too complicated for us to use it. The price could be better as well.""Stormshield Network Security is quite expensive.""Improvement is needed in terms of the technical support of the manufacturer.""This solution has a big problem with web filtering and it needs to be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "For mid-sized companies, they sell their appliances for good prices."
  • "The SN200 series costs between $500 USD and $600 USD per year, whereas the SN700 series costs approximately $1,000 annually."
  • "The pricing could be better."
  • "The price of this solution and the price of support are ok."
  • "We bought a three-year license, and we renew it whenever it expires. The price could be better. It's always very expensive."
  • "I think the price is good."

I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main hang-ups will be with the VIP/load balancing and SSL. For some reason that completely escapes me, both of these vendors make getting valid certificates onto their boxes unnecessarily difficult -- the Fortinet appliances more so than the Sophos UTM appliances. At one point a Fortinet engineer had to write an entire manual on how to get an SSL certificate uploaded successfully on the 4.x firmware Sophos: The one feature that is missing (and this makes some amount of sense) from the Sophos appliance is BITS caching for updates. Other than that, Sophos offers a full replacement for TMG on UTM9. The XG platform also offers a replacement for the TMG; however, some of the rumblings about upcoming releases suggests that Sophos is going to give XG the Apple iOS treatment and "streamline" the interface...potentially cutting out/hiding some functionality. On the effectiveness of the NGFW, Sophos is mostly good but has a few issues blocking all pieces of an application. For instance, we had to build custom blocking rules for OpenVPN (the vpn was being used to bypass the content filter) because the default Application Control wasn't effectively blocking the application. Fortinet: If it… Read more →
