We performed a comparison between Meraki SD-WAN and VMware NSX based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two Software Defined Networking (SDN) solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."Meraki SD-WAN is user friendly."
"It is easy to monitor and manage."
"They're known for their ease of use and ubiquitous management platform that covers everything. Meraki really excels in plug-and-play solutions. You just plug it up, and everything works. All of the components—the firewall/router, the switches, the access points, the cameras—work very nicely together, and they all can be managed from one platform. That is probably their biggest selling point. Everything comes in one ubiquitous package, and you don't have to manage different components from different platforms. You can see everything from one platform."
"The most valuable feature is the firewall capability. It's also got a very good graphical user interface and is very easy to manage."
"The most valuable features of this solution are load balancing and the security possibilities you have."
"Tech support is willing to go the extra mile to resolve issues."
"The solution is scalable."
"The Meraki SD-WAN solution is simple to deploy."
"It has reduced the number of people on the network team along with the system engineer involved in the security process. So, it is valuable."
"Firewall security is one of VMware NSX's vital features"
"The interface is intuitive enough."
"From a security standpoint, the customer was able to better secure critical workloads while routing L2/L3 worked normally, giving them more confidence that they would be ready for any potential security incident mitigation or outage (DR)."
"NSX is good in managing security or controlling the security and the access control for each single VM."
"The initial setup is straightforward."
"The we can actually extend Layer 2 networking across datacenters, and also Layer 3 networking, which comes along with it."
"I have found VMware NSX to be easy to use."
"The product could be improved by being made more simple to use. We had some issues integrating our MPLS with Meraki SD-WAN."
"The solution needs to enact more advanced protections."
"The integration with other tools must be improved."
"Scalability could be improved. Yes, you can add more than 300 or 400 sites onto it, but because it's not a true SD-WAN and, effectively, it's just a Multi-VRF, it's all hub and spoke at that point. That's the nature of the design, but that's what keeps it simple to administer. So, it's a trade off."
"I'm not too familiar with the Meraki environment, but I suppose more automation is always a good thing."
"Perimetral security for new requirements on financial networks and DRP systems, like SAP."
"Meraki could make better use of virtual connect."
"The area I think this solution should improve is the pricing."
"The initial establishment can be complex."
"Going through and getting more features sets from the routing protocols is definitely necessary for the future."
"They have some limitations in the firewall features as compared to the on-prem or dedicated hardware appliance. They can add more features, such as IPS and IDS, to the cloud firewall."
"The vendor should integrate a basic load balancer in future versions"
"It takes time to do the initial setup. It is a bit slow, which is surprising."
"There is room for improvement in VMware NSX's workload management, particularly in the orchestration layer and in managing workloads across multiple clouds."
"In the next release, they should enhance the visual interface. With NSX-T, it's difficult to communicate between the public cloud and the container."
"The solution is complex but for the key user, it's not really complex. You just need to learn the standards and mechanics for your specific product."
Meraki SD-WAN is ranked 1st in Software Defined Networking (SDN) with 61 reviews while VMware NSX is ranked 2nd in Network Virtualization with 94 reviews. Meraki SD-WAN is rated 8.2, while VMware NSX is rated 8.0. The top reviewer of Meraki SD-WAN writes "Very stable security, great service, and the best for VPN management". On the other hand, the top reviewer of VMware NSX writes "Allows for seamless micro-segmentation and the support is exceptional". Meraki SD-WAN is most compared with Cisco SD-WAN, VMware SD-WAN, Omada Cloud SDN, Cradlepoint NetCloud and Prisma SD-WAN, whereas VMware NSX is most compared with Nutanix Flow Network Security, Illumio, Cisco ACI, Akamai Guardicore Segmentation and Cisco Secure Workload. VMware NSX is VMware's data center networking platform that supports among other things VxLAN that provides micro-segmentation to ensure optimal performance and security (both north/south and east/west). VMware SD-WAN solution is through their acquisition of Velocloud, which is the market leader in the space. Meraki SD-WAN is owned by Cisco. Meraki SD-WAN is a simple, quick to implement, all-in-one solution that is cloud managed and great for smaller offices. Cisco's higher end, feature rich SD-WAN solution is through their Viptela offering. Cisco's leading data center offering is ACI. Many SMBs are going with a managed service that use Cisco or VMware's solution. Cisco and VMware do not integrate well, so it is best to choose one vendor or the other.
VMware NSX is all about Software Defined Networking ie virtualizing the 7 layers of switches/routers that we know in the physical HW world. VMware is very successful with this technology acquired from NICERA. SD-WAN stands for Software-Defined WAN which is about networking but NOT at the local level, it is a wide area network. For this VMware made another acquisition which is VeloCloud. Cisco Meraki SD-WAN and VeloCloud are both in the magic quadrant and therefore competing.
Well, both products are very good but if you are looking for only SD-WAN Feafure than Cisco Meraki is the perfect solution: it's easy to manage, easy to deploy and deep insight at the packet level.
VMware NSX is the complete package of comprehensive features like Application Load Balancing, routing, switching, micro-segmentation and many more but at a cost! It's very easy to manage from a single pane of glass.
in a nutshell, if you want Application-Aware Load balancing and wan optimization which should be easy to manage and deploy than Cisco Meraki is the right product and if you are looking for a fully integrated solution and have a deep pocket then you should choose VMware NSX.
Meraki SD-WAN is ranked 2nd in Software Defined Networking (SDN) with 11 reviews while VMware NSX is ranked 1st in Software Defined Networking (SDN) with 19 reviews. Meraki SD-WAN is rated 8.0, while VMware NSX is rated 8.0. The top reviewer of Meraki SD-WAN writes "Enables us to get valuable information from the system without having to go into every single device". On the other hand, the top reviewer of VMware NSX writes "Enables us to identify problems before they manifest, but they should develop more advanced features". Meraki SD-WAN is most compared with VeloCloud, Cisco SD-WAN and Cradlepoint NetCloud, whereas VMware NSX is most compared with Cisco ACI, Cisco Tetration and Nutanix Flow.
