We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Immediately we noticed huge performance gains, even on older hardware and once we implemented a 10GB link between both servers, the sync was near-instant after the initial sync was complete.""The StarWind Virtual SAN provides a clever and unique solution to the Computing Split Brain problem.""The failover redundancy is why we bought this product and it has never let us down.""StarWind allowed us to deploy highly available shared storage within our budget.""The product has improved the ability to mimic physical SAN environments to demo scenarios and troubleshoot problems.""We are running Hyper-V on twin servers in failover, and being able to manage servers from anywhere I need to, virtually, has been a game changer.""It has been extremely stable for the three years we've been running it.""The most valuable feature is the fact that the nodes are Active/Active, and allow us to do upgrades on any node without any downtime."

"The solution is scalable.""The most valuable features are the appliance-type feel and that you don't need additional licenses as everything is built-in.""The initial setup is pretty straightforward.""I like that Scale Computing HCR is slimmed down and gives me the features I need and not features that I don't need.""The most valuable feature of Scale Computing HC3 is if one of the devices fails, you won't even notice, the service maintains operation. The customers don't have to waste two, or three days on delays. Additionally, you do not have to waste time with recovery software, it is a lot easier.""I rate Scale Computing support 10 out of 10. They're accessible and responsive.""The most valuable feature of the solution is the nice GUI.""The product's initial setup phase is too easy."

"I have found that the admin deployment, monitoring off-premises, and the many services important features. Additionally, the solution has good integration.""Management of the hardware and software in one console is the most valuable feature. It's also compatible with vSAN.""Homogeneity is most valuable. The truth is that having everything in a single cluster helps a lot.""VxRail has given us a lot of tools in a one-stop-shop environment.""The initial setup was not complex.""The manageability for controlling the console is the most valuable feature.""We deploy VxRail systems to provide our customers with a distributed information solution. The customer was impressed because we delivered a serious data reduction. For example, we showed them that 10 terabytes on their traditional storage solution could be reduced to 1.5 terabytes in the VxRail systems. That's why the customers also like it so much,""The VxRail is built on two specific platforms that have been in the industry for the last 15 to 20 years: the 1-U socket and the 2-U socket platforms from Dell. They're in their sixteenth generation of those platforms, I believe, so they're very stable."

Cons
"Ability to to test the virtual storage are network area and storage speed from StarWind Management Console.""It would be good to have a little more access to control certain aspects within the UI.""This product could be improved with the inclusion of new health check procedures.""It would be great if it provided thin provisioned virtual disks.""For someone entering the IT sector with little knowledge of storage, iSCSI, and virtual disks, they might not find the GUI immediately obvious.""I see no need for major improvements but there could be some improvements in the form of notifications and the simplifying of maintenance mode.""I would like them to invest time in reducing the complexity of the startup and shutdown procedure.""In the next release, they could make some graphs of the real-time loading, speed of storage, and interfaces. Of course, these can be viewed in other places. But, in the event of a malfunction or troubleshooting, this would be convenient."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"Scale HC3 improvements would involve literally fixing up the replication.""The product struggles to cope with bigger workloads. In the next release, I'd like some backup solutions to be added.""The snapshot technology takes up 500 times more space compared to other solutions.""The product could use a better control center.""I would like bigger clusters with more than eight nodes.""I've had so many issues with the sales team when I was looking to make some improvements, and improve the performance. They would create so many excuses to force me to buy new nodes all the time and not let me add more memory to each node.""On the fly, you cannot do anything on Scale Computing HC3, though it is a very rarely needed area.""Scale Computing HC3 said in an announcement they were going to integrate with a backup service which would be good. If they could do this it would be beneficial."

More Scale Computing HC3 Cons →

"The technical support is good but could be better.""I would like to have a unified platform where I, for example, can manage my 50 stores from a single portal in VxRail and be able to apply all the updates at once. I want to unify them into a centralized console.""I would like to see integration with vCenter if possible.""The licensing needs to be improved upon.""It's not really flexible with different use cases.""Right now, it's difficult for a non-technical person to participate in using the product. It could be made more consumer-friendly.""When we have a vulnerability or we need to upgrade VxRail, it takes a long time. It takes eight hours each time we upgrade.""The solution could improve by having more storage performance because in some other solutions you can have a file system that can be mounted at several places at one time."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "I pay for Scale Computing HC3 and it includes customer service for one year. We paid for an additional year for customer service but that includes the updates and everything for the software. Additionally, the licensing is for Windows, which is the same for everybody."
  • "I give the pricing a nine out of ten."
  • "rate HC3's pricing a five out of ten since it is affordable."
  • "The product is worth the money, but I would not say it's very cheap or very expensive."
  • More Scale Computing HC3 Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "There is a permanent vSAN license included since it is required, but vCenter\ESXi host licensing should be validated in the purchase process."
  • "Most of hyper-converged solutions require additional licenses for the virtualization layer (like VMware)."
  • "Be mindful of your storage needs now and for the future."
  • "Compare the VxRail product to Nutanix. Nutanix has more features, but its pricing is higher."
  • "Compare it to what you spent on your last solution."
  • "We most likely pay yearly for support. The cost was justified by now because it stays up and I don't have to constantly open tickets. I probably rebooted the system once or twice. We haven't replaced any discs in the storage, we haven't had to do any disc replacements, so it just runs. You pay a little more but you cut down on the maintenance."
  • "The price is a little bit on the higher side but the system and management are so quick and easy that it's worth it for the customer."
  • "We were expecting Dell EMC to bring us something that would work very quickly and easily, but also be at a reasonable price point, and they did."

    Reviews from Real Users

VxRail is an all-in-one solution: "You don't have to worry too much about the hardware and you don't have to work on integrating a storage device. We instead have this as an all-in-one solution and everything is available as a box."

VxRail is remarkable: “The cover points feature in VxRail is remarkable. It's unique. It has an intervention failover system as well as an automatic failover system, reaching clusters existing in VxRail…

VxRail is a powerful performer: “...VxRail delivers a very high number of IOPS for a hybrid configuration or an all-flash configuration. The processors that are available in the Xeon family are very powerful. They are multi-core with typically 2 gigahertz, 2.4 gigahertz, or higher frequency, so the performance is very much appreciated.”
