Q&A Highlights
Question: Any users have experience with Veeam Backup Solutions?
Answer: Veeam is a good solution IF you have a Complete Virtual environment....they lack support on physical machines and most environments that have both physical & VM's to manage. The user should also make sure that their BU or replication solution has deduplication for efficiency and Veeam's solution is weak in this area... Regards, Tom

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Veeam Backup has many valuable features and every feature is different. I have created backups for file-level backup, VMware or hypervisor virtual machines, physical machines, and workstations as well. Every time, I learn something new.""Very flexible, all-in-one solution.""Get only one interface to manage all backup sites, secure them with replication, and manage outside LTO media.""One of the most valuable features of Veeam is that the restoration is easy and reliable.""The ability of instant VM recovery, which means starting the backup VM and getting it online while the recovery is still happening is the most valuable feature.""The standout feature for us is instant recovery.""The backup and replication capabilities are quite good.""It has helped us to protect our IP address and critical information."

"Setting up Veeam is easy, and it's portable, too.""The stability of Veeam ONE is good.""The solution's customer service is good.""Veeam ONE is a very good management product...The technical support is very good, and I think it's one of the best. The response time is very quick.""One valuable feature of Veeam ONE for backup management is its dashboard, which offers a comprehensive view of backups and other essential data.""As a manager, I find Veeam One's reporting service to be very helpful.""The product is very straightforward and very easy to use from the client-side.""It has been useful for monitoring, troubleshooting, and assessing our environment, as well as for investigating bottlenecks."

Cons
"In Linux, I suggest you backup for a PostgreSQL database.""Could be improved with hybrid cloud integration backup.""Veeam Backup Replication is a bit difficult to use. If you have used other solutions such as Commvault, you will find it is much easier to use. Veeam Backup Replication does backups in a different way that is not as simple as other solutions. Doing backups of SQL Servers is much easier in Commvault. However, the difficulty could be the lack of experience I have had with Veeam Backup Replication.""The ease of use could be improved, but I don't have a very deep amount of experience in Veeam, so it's difficult to say what could be improved.""Near-synchronous, better RPO and RTO snapshot-based takes a lot of space and resources.""I would like a solution for SAP systems to be included.""The price can be a bit expensive.""They need to focus more on cloud backup."

More Veeam Backup & Replication Cons →

"It's not that easy to use from the management side.""The user experience can be better, as it is one of the areas with shortcomings in the product.""I think Veeam ONE should be included in the base product instead of as an add-on because customers tend to look for simple solutions that are integrated.""The threshold could be easier to configure.""Agent backups could be better. I have many problems with agent backups, particularly on Linux and MySQL databases. MySQL works well with Microsoft products but not with other products. The database backups are not working correctly, and we are losing business. I am not getting any support; administration is also a significant problem.""For our company's usage, the price of the product is considered to be one of the major drawbacks because we have a lot of infrastructure, and its services don't fit well with our needs.""Perhaps the interface could be improved, though it has always been fine for me.""The solution could improve the performance. We are not able to check the status of any system. Additionally, if there was an option to monitor server clusters it would be helpful."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If you have Exchange, Oracle, SQL, or a supported SAN, then I suggest getting at least an Enterprise edition. It’ll pay for itself in no time."
  • "The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better."
  • "Room for improvement is actually more in the way of licensing. The really good and useful features are in the Enterprise plus edition, and that one is really expensive."
  • "Since pricing is per socket, it is not expensive to add capacity as you go along."
  • "The licensing is based on the number of cores you have in your ESX or Hyper-V environment."
  • "The price is a bit high. Licensing type is VMware friendly, so it is easy."
  • "I think the price is good when you choose the Essentials Suite, but when you buy a full featured version (for instance the Enterprise Plus) the price is a little bit expensive."
  • "Setup cost and licensing of Veeam are nothing to complain about when compared to similar products for enterprise backup recovery solutions."
  • More Veeam Backup & Replication Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "For what it does, the price is acceptable."
  • "If you have Veeam Backup and Replication with the essential license then this solution is free. If you were to purchase Veeam ONE by itself it is priced cheaper than competitors."
  • "The licenses are code-based or server-based for Veeam ONE. The last version is 12, and it is host-based, I don't like to move to a code-based solution."
  • "Veeam has been raising its prices in the last two years, so it's now lacking some competitiveness in pricing."
  • "I have not used the resale license in our testing environments. Sometimes, our customers used the trial license for 30 days and so on."
  • "I don't pay for the solution, so I can't comment on the cost."
  • "The cost is based on the number of core servers."
  • "Our licensing cost is $200 a year."

I'm not experienced with Veeam rather the backup solution I could recommend is backup exec, that’s the one I have experience with.

Yes I have has a chance to do a POC for the Veeam backup and replication product. And to be honest I had a good experience of trying the product and the capabilities with VMware along with this product are somethings that I was impressed with. Other products can also do almost all the similar things but they in addition to cater to the Virtual environment and are also efficient in handling the physical environments.. But Veeam is purposely built only for virtualized infrastructure.
