We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The product has made our mainframe data management process easier. It has helped us save manhours. The tool's most valuable feature is the ability to edit tape files. Its ability to clone files is beneficial in application development.""I like the ability that it has to format copy books in a presentable manner. So, you will be able to see the starting offset in length of each field within the layout."

"When I run my App Test, I can directly connect with TDM. I can publish all my data into one table in TDM, then run my App Test directly.""The synthetic data generation is really good... You can write rules and create permutations and combinations according to your needs. Or you can take a snippet of the Prod data and replicate it.""The solution is very user-friendly. For instance, if I wanted to create a project with Data Generation, Data sub-setting, Selective sub-setting, and Data Marketing, it can be easily done in TDM. And if you want to export these project definitions from one system to another, it can be done with just one click.""The solution has a portal where we can create data. We can also create synthetic data with the help of the product. We can use it to create a new data set in the database, eliminating many issues. The product helps with data accuracy and availability.""The masking of data has really been key for us to be able to replace PII with fake values.""When you have hundreds and hundreds of databases everywhere, how do you do that without looking for keys? If you do it manually, you're going to need a lot of people. With the tool, I work with five people on my team. Right now, we're modeling 700 different databases, and we can do it very quickly because of the tool.""It allows us to create a testing environment that is repeatable. And we can manage the data so that our testing becomes automated, everything from actually performing the testing to also evaluating the results.""CA is one of the few tool suites that has end-to-end features. Whatever role you are playing, whatever personality you are trying to address, it has that feature. For example, CA Service Virtualization goes hand-in-hand with TDM."

Cons
"We plan to replace BMC Compuware File-AID due to its price. Two years back, we paid 11,000 dollars. However, the current price is 27,900 dollars. The price has increased to at least eight times its initial cost. We would need to pay around 60,000 dollars to have all three products together. We also encountered issues during version updates.""Technical support has gotten better over the years, though there's always room for improvement."

More BMC Compuware File-AID Cons →

"I would say implementing test data management requires a lot of effort and time...Even if you have experienced people, it takes time.""Needs improvement on SAP test data generation for SAP testing.""Broadcom Test Data Manager is for data management. I would like to see some extension with data warehousing concerning ETL. It should also integrate with Jira or other reporting tools. Currently, after creating data, we update tickets and other information in various tools. This would enable us to attach relevant files or information to specific tickets.""They should make the Portal a little more user-friendly, make it even easier to configure things directly from the Portal.""Get everything centralized into the portal.""They could make it easier to model databases, because right now it is really technical, so to train someone on it takes a while.""There were some issues with initial setup. It wasn't as smooth as we had thought. We ran into a network issue, a firewall issue, things like that. It wasn't something we could not fix. We worked with CA support and with the client's team to fix it. But there were issues, it took a lot of time to install and configure.""As the solution continues to evolve, the one thing I like about it is the API-friendly layers that they have added into the realm. So, I just would like to see more support around that and more usability."

Pricing and Cost Advice
Information Not Available
  • "It can be scaled for as many licenses as the customer is willing to pay. It's kind of expensive."
  • "Know all the data requirements before buying this product. There are a lot of features for this tool, which may or may not be useful to a particular company. Make sure of what your requirements for your data are."
  • "Part of the licensing is dependent on whether you want to use the portal. It's based on floating users. The other part is dependent on what type of system you are using. We are using mainframe, so we paid good money for a mainframe license."
  • "The cost of this tool is pretty high... CA provides licenses for different utilities like masking but even if you break it up, the pricing is still high."
  • "I would rate Broadcom TDM's pricing as four out of five."
  • "My company makes yearly payments toward the licensing costs. So, I consider the licensing costs to be expensive, especially considering what I have heard from my colleagues."
  • "Mainly, we compete with the IBM team and Informatica, and if you compare the license cost, Broadcom is too flexible. Depending on the customer's budget, we suggest they buy only respective SKUs, and it's much cheaper compared to others because we have gone over multiple deals where pricing was never a factor in differentiating products."
  • "The tool's pricing is high."

    Overview

File-AID is Compuware’s cross-platform file and data management solution that enables developers and QA staff to quickly and conveniently access necessary data and files instead of hunting around for them. In turn, developers devote less time to data-related tasks and spend more time developing new functionality and managing production problems. Rightsizing your test data provides confidence to make code changes without unintended consequences.

File-AID gives developers the ability to:

    • Effectively manage files and data across platforms
    • Access all standard file types regardless of record length or format for application integration
    • Automatically compare data files or objects to simplify the test results validation process
    • Reformat files by easily modifying an existing file format instead of starting from scratch
    • Extract and load related subsets of data from multiple databases and files
    • Ensure all test conditions are met by selecting the precise application test data you need
    • Customize test data for a particular application and specific conditions
    • Automate these activities using tools you already own, such as Jenkins

CA Test Data Manager offers an automated solution to one of the most time-consuming and resource-intensive problems in Continuous Delivery - creating, maintaining and provisioning of the test data needed to rigorously test evolving applications. CA Test Data Manager uniquely combines elements of data subsetting, masking and synthetic, on-demand data generation to enable testing teams to meet the agile needs of the organization.
