We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Technical support is great.""Commvault Backup & Recovery's search utility is its most valuable feature.""The features I find most helpful in Commvault are its ability to perform incremental backups and significantly reduce backup times for our diverse multi-architecture, multi-environment environment.""The cloud integration is a massive win for us, giving us a single backup service for all of our on-premise and cloud systems.""All the management is centralized from that CommServe server. You can manage all the clients and all the infrastructure using one interface and one server... Using the Commvault interface, you can customize and generate multiple reports to easily see what is protected and what is not protected in the environment.""It provides us a good holistic view of everything that we have backed up so far. It also provides us all the recovery points. If we look at an an object that has been backed up, we can tell how many retention copies it has, how far we can go, and recover any data, if needed.""The product has the best features for scaling up and administering all the solutions from a single platform.""The data is well-protected. It doesn't age off until it's copied. That's a big feature right there. When you reach the end of your retention, it does not expire until the secondary copy is completed. That allows you to hold onto data that otherwise would have aged off by retention. I like that feature. It's hard to just delete or lose data using the Commvault platform."

"The initial setup was simple and easy. Anyone without prior experience can install, configure, and use it.""VM backup and the item level recovery are the most valuable features.""This solution is stable.""Reverse Delta is Altaro proprietary backup deduplication technology. With Reverse Delta, the latest version of a file is always made available in its entirety, not as a delta file.""The ease of use of the solution is its most valuable feature. The interface is also excellent.""We frequently use the granular restore option for when our users accidentally delete files or to recover emails from mailboxes. We have found that to be a must-have feature and it comes with the solution at no extra cost.""Valuable features for us include quick recovery, compression, and deduplication.""It is an excellent product. It is easy to deploy, stable, and fast. Their support is excellent."

Cons
"Compared to Rubrik, MongoDB Data Protector, and NetBackup, Commvault is better. The licensing team was quite tricky recently because they stopped the unlimited files for that license. Commvault made a bank of 500GB only, a node-based license can take it, which is disappointing. Reporting needs to be more granular. Also, there should be a showback of data being backed up, and the backup cost to share the cost internally with the department.""It is a little more complicated than it really needs to be.""The product's migration process and stability need improvement.""The pricing of the solution can be improved and made cheaper.""I would like to see a more user-friendly GUI.""There is room for improvement in terms of data security.""Bare-metal restore needs some work. It's not intuitive and seems to have been an afterthought.""Support could improve and the initial configuration would be easier with assistance from a professional engineer."

"Stability.""It would be nice to be able to recover the items to their original location.""It would be nice to see a feature that backs up the host so that, in case of a server failure, an entire server could be restored all at once.""Backup speed and comparisons between versions used to be slow on big VMs but that was improved greatly later on.""To improve Altaro, I would like to see the ability to choose more than one backup location at a time.""The initial set up was complex, and I was not able to do the set up myself.""The cloud backup and VMware support (now available in the latest releases), could do with some improvement.""The application could include a feature to install a set size of data, such as the ability to store a single application with all its registry information for easy transfer."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."
