Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature is Commvault's coverage. It has wide coverage to back up every data center environment. The product can back up OpenStack, OpenShift, and competitive solutions don't have this feature. Commvault can handle backing up any virtual workload or enterprise application.""Commvault has a unique administration platform with more features than its competitors.""Metallic helped me to restore the data within an hour, which is much faster than restoring from Microsoft services.""Commvault is very simple to use and it is automated.""The user interface is very easy to navigate.""The backup and restore capabilities are key. The most useful things to us about Commvault, in general, is the breadth of the applications that it can protect as well as the features inside of it, like deduplication and encryption. When people get their data encrypted, Commvault has a way to tell if somebody is being attacked through a cybersecurity threat because their data changes. So, Commvault has what they call honeypot files out there to look to see if anybody is changing these files. Only Commvault knows which files those are, so nobody should be messing with those files. If it changes, then it will alert you to say, "Oh, I potentially have somebody messing with my files." It will alert you to something going on in your environment that probably shouldn't be happening. We deploy that with all our customers so they have this capability as well.""We are using a KVM system in our cloud, and this solution works very well with it.""Quick backups and restores of data are the most valuable features. It is important that it is an easy solution to integrate with the SAML authentication of our tenant, so we can have our users log into the systems and do their own restores, if needed."

"The most valuable features are the support for both NAS and NFS.""The most valuable feature is stability.""It gives you an option to back up to the cloud or back up to on-premise, or to backup to cloud storage.""The most valuable feature is the simplicity in configuration and use.""It's a user-friendly solution."

Cons
"Support could improve and the initial configuration would be easier with assistance from a professional engineer.""When you deploy Complete Data Protection for past services, it's more complicated because you cannot directly back up from the previous service host. We have to build a proxy server, like a middleware, to directly access the past database server. It's complex and hard for beginners to figure out.""Reduce the complexity for better understanding of the reports. There are a lot of variables in which you can get confused while elaborating on reports.""Its dashboard could be improved to provide a summarized version of all the jobs instead of having to go through each one of them. We should easily be able to glance at all issues. If I had not gone with the on-premise version, I would have had regular reports with the cloud version. It would be an advantage if they increase the compression rate of the backup. I am keeping it on-prem, so I'll need more disks depending on the policies that I have in the retention period. Its price could also be lower. If a good solution can be cheaper, it is always an advantage.""Data center backup must be improved.""Our customers complain that this is a difficult product to manage.""The pricing could be more flexible in terms of licensing.""My customers are not satisfied with the tool because there is a little trouble with the throughput of Metallic."

More Commvault Cloud Cons →

"There are still a few things on SharePoint that they need to correct in terms of how they backup and restore.""For newcomers or people who have less experience, it's a complex solution that could be simplified somewhat.""Better integration with third-party databases and applications is needed.""I would like to see the graphical user interface improved to include all of the functionality because there are some things that you need to use the command-line interface for.""The features need to be updated to support the latest hardware, as it changes every year."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."

  • "My understanding of the costs is that the price is fair, and not too expensive."
  • "The licensing was based on a three-year subscription and the price is good compared so some other vendors."
  • "The pricing is more or less the same as what we'd get from Veeam on Office 365, so it's fine."
