We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It has a nice, simple control panel. You can clearly see the state and health of storage along with the synchronization.""Updates to server hardware are now painless and done during working hours with zero stress. We had a RAID failure a few months back, and nobody in the building even noticed and there was no after hours time used for repair.""The installation of StarWind Virtual SAN was pretty easy, and the configuration was done in no time.""The management interface on the software is very simple. It is insanely simple compared to most SANs. The interface is also powerful when used to complete tasks that an IT administrator needs to complete.""The ProActive support gives me peace of mind because I am a one man shop, but with the technical support behind me, I feel like more than just one person. We spent two to three hours, depending on what we have to do, always on the phone, and they do not push to end the call.""It is extremely stable.""StarWind Virtual SAN offers high availability and data resilience features to prevent data loss if hardware fails.""Before VSAN, hypervisor configuration changes and updates resulted in VM outages. Now, downtime is dramatically reduced."

"Oracle OLTP benchmark to test how it improves the performance while using flash drive NVMe.""The most useful feature of SANsymphony is that it's able to manage any brand of block storage.""The use of the RAM cache allows you to speed up the writing and reading of data while also allowing for a possible increase in performance by increasing the RAM on the servers.""Good security with this solution.""The interface is user-friendly.""The synchronous mirror allows us to operate a fully redundant storage solution that is distributed across two sites.""DataCore has helped provide flexible, highly available, high-performance storage that otherwise would have been outside our price range.""It is a very stable solution."

"The product's initial setup phase is too easy.""I rate Scale Computing support 10 out of 10. They're accessible and responsive.""The most valuable features are the appliance-type feel and that you don't need additional licenses as everything is built-in.""The initial setup is pretty straightforward.""The solution is scalable.""The most valuable feature of Scale Computing HC3 is if one of the devices fails, you won't even notice, the service maintains operation. The customers don't have to waste two, or three days on delays. Additionally, you do not have to waste time with recovery software, it is a lot easier.""I like that Scale Computing HCR is slimmed down and gives me the features I need and not features that I don't need.""The most valuable feature of the solution is the nice GUI."

Cons
"Initially, when we first started, the sync was horrible.""Management tools could be improved, sometimes the usage seems to be slowed down and confusing. A native web interface could also be an option. I love to see in the future port of the software on a general Linux distribution like RedHat or Ubuntu in order to avoid windows license costs. I would also like to see features like erasure coding implemented. On the VSAN software, I would like to see some improvements in the storage pools (eliminate the usage of the file as a data container and use the raw partition).""One point for improvement is to increase the performance capabilities of the Windows-based executable as compared to its Linux Controller Virtual Machine (CVM) equivalent.""It should be improved in the way it detects the right filesystem image after a complete shutdown of the system or in the case of disaster recovery.""There needs to be more visibility on how long the cloud replication will take as there is no current ETA.""Being able to run StarWind vSAN on top of any free UNIX operating system to build a resilient iSCSI/FTP/SMB storage system would be useful.""The logs can also become very noisy when there is an issue, which is very infrequent.""The system performs as expected, but we're always looking for performance improvements regarding the best utilization of NVMe disks."

"For customers or technicians who don't speak and understand English, it would be great to have other language support, all the more so given the number of countries in which SanSymphony is used.""The solution is constantly evolving.""There is no way of quickly matching the exact size of a vDisk to a disk pool.""Right now, the version used is run on Microsoft Windows Server. Having a Linux version or even an appliance would be better as it would eliminate the use of additional licensing for another piece of hardware.""It would be ideal if they were providing archive licensing with the ability to create a second pool on existing storage nodes.""DataCore SANsymphony should integrate file servers at a good price into the solution.""Problem detection could be easier. It should help customers identify problems very quickly because it's not easy to analyze on the platform today.""When I sometimes reboot for maintenance, the connectivity from the iSCSI initiator host could be improved."

More DataCore SANsymphony Cons →

"On the fly, you cannot do anything on Scale Computing HC3, though it is a very rarely needed area.""Scale Computing HC3 said in an announcement they were going to integrate with a backup service which would be good. If they could do this it would be beneficial.""The product struggles to cope with bigger workloads. In the next release, I'd like some backup solutions to be added.""The product could use a better control center.""I would like bigger clusters with more than eight nodes.""The snapshot technology takes up 500 times more space compared to other solutions.""I've had so many issues with the sales team when I was looking to make some improvements, and improve the performance. They would create so many excuses to force me to buy new nodes all the time and not let me add more memory to each node.""Scale HC3 improvements would involve literally fixing up the replication."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "In my case, the licensing per terabytes is very high and it must be licensed for each extra functionality."
  • "The pricing and licensing are better with DataCore."
  • "The cost is at the same level as other storage solutions and it is easy to understand the licensing."
  • "Make sure you are made aware of the annual subscription cost when purchasing."
  • "Pricing has improved but it is still expensive."
  • "This product has a good ratio between quality and price. In many cases, it's less expensive to work with DataCore than other storage systems."
  • "This solution allows the use of off-the-shelf hardware and charges by the TB of storage."
  • "The solution is cost effective."
  • More DataCore SANsymphony Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "I pay for Scale Computing HC3 and it includes customer service for one year. We paid for an additional year for customer service but that includes the updates and everything for the software. Additionally, the licensing is for Windows, which is the same for everybody."
  • "I give the pricing a nine out of ten."
  • "rate HC3's pricing a five out of ten since it is affordable."
  • "The product is worth the money, but I would not say it's very cheap or very expensive."
