Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The source site replication feature is valuable.""I have found the product to be scalable.""Client deduplication.""Scheduling is valuable. It does a good job of backing up, and it does a good job of restoring. Nobody has got a problem with that. The agents are well supported.""The product has a proven track record of good backups without much of a failure ratio. It also has a good backup in terms of the compression ratio.""Effective in protecting the virtualization system and end points.""It's simple to configure.""The most valuable feature of Avamar would have to be the way it works over needing very little bandwidth to move data across a WAN or LAN."

"The solution is easy to use.""I have used Micro Focus Data Protector for the file backup facilities. My primary use of the software is to backup file data.""Data Protector is quite simple and easy to deploy. The deployment is always the same. It's on a server, and the agents are deployed to the machines in a straightforward way. We have two engineers who deploy and manage all our backup solutions.""It's a good product that's pretty easy to use.""It is a traditional backup model. If you talk about file server and the official Windows database, it's a stable product.""It works excellently only with Oracle.""The solution is easy to use.""The installation was simple and provided an easy way to install even on Unix servers. It has excellent features like deduplication."

Cons
"I would like to see better integration with third-party applications and platforms.""When we used the solution, it was still new, and so the customer service/technical support was not the best.""It's not the best solution for big databases.""The user interface needs to be improved. It's not as good as it could be.""The performance takes up a lot of resources, unfortunately.""There are limitations when trying to use this solution with Hyper-V.""Desktop-laptop backups and backup over the WAN needs lot of improvisation. For DTLT there must be a provision to push agents from the management console.""There also needs to be single sign-on support."

More Dell Avamar Cons →

"If you compare the solution with the same specific features and enhancements on another solution, Data Protector is expensive. This is especially true when compared to, for example, Veeam.""The GUI could be updated. The GUI hasn't changed since version 6. It's on version 10 now. The reporting could also be better. Also, while Data Protector is excellent for backing up physical hardware, it needs more features for backing up VM images because many environments use hypervisor.""VM backups needs to be improved. They need to make it similar to the way Veeam and Commvault are doing the virtual backups.""The Micro Focus Data Protector support is not as good as Veeam Backup & Replication's support.""The solution is not intuitive enough. I think they should work on the user experience and the graphical interface. These can be a lot better.""The new backup systems are using new mechanisms for the recovery phases; for example, VM, recovery and testing the backup before recovering it. These features are not available in Data Protector.""VMware backup integration and cloud recovery is lacking.""In general, you can say that Micro Focus Data Protector is behind in capabilities when compared with other backup solutions, such as Commvault, Symantec, NetBackup, but it is very strong for certain use cases such as array integration. We are using it in production even now. There should be some kind of cloud integration and archiving solutions. I think this is the area they need to focus on."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is very expensive. It's a trust based licensing. So that's an ethical challenge."
  • "This solution is less expensive than Veeam for us, although it depends on the customer because we get a great discount."
  • "I'm not sure, but perhaps the pricing could be done better at the moment."
  • "The price is the main thing I'd like to see them change. If they can come down in price, that would be a good thing. It's very cost competitive in the entry level range, because Veeam pricing is much cheaper than Avamar."
  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."

  • "Pricing/licensing is Data Protector's single best offering. In its most basic environment, the only license required is for whatever target device is required."
  • "The licensing structure provides cost savings to business."
  • "It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
  • "Avoid using many LTO drives; when using fewer drives, the price will be extremely good."
  • "In Data Protector, if you need extra features, you need to buy the agents for these features. Some of the features are Terabytes, some of them are agents. There's some complexity in the pricing and licensing."
  • "The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
  • "The pricing is around $3,000 to $5,000. The charge additionally for support and to scale."
  • "The solution requires paying for a license."
