Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It works quickly and is very stable.""All the features in the system are highly valuable.""We've found the product to be stable.""The most valuable features are image backups and file backups.""Avamar has long been the best in its class, but that's changing as new solutions emerge. However, Dell has traditionally been a leader in deduplication and compression. Avamar enabled us to shift data from on-premise local appliances to data centers and multi-tenant infrastructure. That's a powerful feature. because customers can back up to the cloud without upgrading o high-capacity links or congesting their backups.""It is a very complete product.""The deduplication feature is the best aspect of the solution.""I think the brand is very good. Support is also very nice for end users and integration with EMC products for businesses."

"If you have a problem with your primary site and can't access your primary database, you can continue working with the database that you have as standby on the other site, by changing its role to primary.""Data Guard also improved because customers with an active Data Guard license want to reduce the I/O in a production environment. Some application complaints to it for Oracle reporting purposes. It has a production environment that needs to be enhanced.""Another valuable feature is the possibility of backing up the database from the standby database instead of the primary database, to avoid backup process overhead in the primary system.""You can see how the logs are applied, check the apply time, and how far behind the standby is at any given time.""We chose this solution for the availability of the databases. We can't afford Oracle Grid, this is the best solution if you want something similar that's less expensive.""Oracle Data Guard is scalable. I rate it a ten out of ten.""Backup and application continuity are most valuable.""Oracle Data Guard is a free solution. When you apply for Enterprise Manager, it comes for free with the solution."

Cons
"The initial setup is a bit complex and could be simpler.""It was challenging to back up our Exchange database, which is one of the reasons we did not continue using this solution.""Interfaces need to be improved.""I have found the support from Dell EMC Avamar to be not as good as Veeam. The time it takes to receive support could be improved. However, once we have the support the agents are knowledgeable and helpful.""The licensing model is not very flexible. Every time we upgrade our storage size, we need to upgrade the Avamar license.""More integration would be helpful, as well as the addition of more applications.""The configuration and expansion aspects of the solution need improvement. They're complicated and don't really integrate well.""I would like to see better integration with third-party applications and platforms."

"For every standby server you have, you must pay a licensing fee, which is the main disadvantage.""It is a very useful administrative IT tool. It saves on costs.""For Italian medium-sized companies, the main challenge lies in the cost associated with licenses.""Overall, there are some operational issues that need to be dealt with.""I think it would be great to have a graphical interface assistant (like DBCA, ASMCA, NETCA, etc.) for initial configuration, monitoring, configuring Oracle Data Guard Broker and all the Data Guard Broker commands, without needing Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control installed.""A significant improvement for Oracle Data Guard would be enabling the disaster recovery site to handle read and write operations, not just data storage.""The implementation is complex for anyone who's jumping into it without any experience. It's all command-line driven implementations. For some, that's a turn-off.""The predominant issue lies in the communication link between the secondary and primary databases."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is very expensive. It's a trust based licensing. So that's an ethical challenge."
  • "This solution is less expensive than Veeam for us, although it depends on the customer because we get a great discount."
  • "I'm not sure, but perhaps the pricing could be done better at the moment."
  • "The price is the main thing I'd like to see them change. If they can come down in price, that would be a good thing. It's very cost competitive in the entry level range, because Veeam pricing is much cheaper than Avamar."
  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."

  • "Oracle Data Guard is a feature available only in Oracle Database Enterprise Edition, and is available for extra cost."
  • "This is the best solution if you want something similar that's less expensive than Oracle Grid."
  • "If you want to have everything automated and done smoothly, you have to add additional licenses."
  • "It is not a cheap product, but if you look at the price, features, availability, scalability, and maturity, it is a very good product."
  • "The cost is expensive."
  • "The cost of the Oracle license will depend on the negotiations with Oracle."
  • "It's a cost-effective solution."
  • "The licensing cost is significantly high."
