We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The solution scales well.""Scheduling is valuable. It does a good job of backing up, and it does a good job of restoring. Nobody has got a problem with that. The agents are well supported.""Dell Avamar has a push upgrade feature that lets you simultaneously push updates to thousands of clients. I also found the self-service part of Dell Avamar helpful.""Its stability and deduplication capabilities are most valuable.""The data reduction feature and the ease of enabling a server in a DR location are the most valuable.""Dell EMC Avamar is easy to work with and is user-friendly.""The stability is okay.""The installation of the solution is easy."

"The features we use for the data deduplication are nice because we're able to back up a much larger amount of data, yet it doesn't necessarily take up that much data on the devices.""The dedupe and compression are pretty extreme. On disk, we're getting dedupe rates of up to 65 percent of data and compression of 34 percent. When you go to the cloud, it's more like 76 percent for dedupe and almost 50 percent for compression.""Data deduplication and replication would be the top two features. The encryption and cloud tiering are also attractive for the future.""QoreStor has helped us to reduce our backup storage requirements on-premises. We've been using the same devices for quite a while, and so it lets us keep using them as opposed to having to rip out all that hardware and create a new on-prem solution. The advantage here is even if we had to retire the hardware tomorrow, the QoreStor part doesn't change. We just have to have additional hardware and put the solution back on whatever hardware we pick and it'll do the same thing.""It integrates with various backup software solutions, which makes it compatible with existing backup workflows and processes.""Deduplication is the most valuable feature. It saves us a lot of space. When we back up 100 terabytes of data, after dedupe, it only uses maybe five to six terabytes for the disk space in QoreStor."

Cons
"Interfaces need to be improved.""I would like to see better integration with third-party applications and platforms.""It would be helpful if the product offered more integration potential.""The user interface needs to be improved. It's not as good as it could be.""Setting up Avamar wasn't so easy, and we had a partner doing the installation for us. Though it was hard at first, it's getting better. The main difficulty was finding plugins for Oracle Database. It took some time to open a ticket with Dell, but everything was fine after that.""The solution, in the future, should offer support for mobile.""Some customers need to back up to tape, but Avamar lacks support, so it costs a lot.""The management of this solution is a little bit difficult for IT administrators. They have to be trained before going through the system."

"In terms of improvement, we would like to have an Air Gap feature to prevent a virus from attaching to something. So that when we don't do a backup, we want the QoreStor to stay offline. It would be a nice feature to have.""The installation could use improvement. The initial installation was a little touchy and it's not really user-installable. You have to have a connection to support to install.""They need to increase their maximum capacity. Other than that, they're doing a pretty good job.""The management interface is in need of improvement. The graphical user interface (GUI) for the web management tools appears clunky, and not super intuitive.""The setup of the software is definitely not the easiest thing. I worked a lot with Quest engineers, especially in the early days when we were first testing it and trying it out. I actually had some of the developers working with us at one point because they were going through these point releases, and I was having trouble getting it to work in this S3-compatible situation. We got it all working eventually, but setup is definitely not the easiest thing in the world.""The ransomware protection of QoreStor could use improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is very expensive. It's a trust based licensing. So that's an ethical challenge."
  • "This solution is less expensive than Veeam for us, although it depends on the customer because we get a great discount."
  • "I'm not sure, but perhaps the pricing could be done better at the moment."
  • "The price is the main thing I'd like to see them change. If they can come down in price, that would be a good thing. It's very cost competitive in the entry level range, because Veeam pricing is much cheaper than Avamar."
  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."

  • "Its pricing model is very attractive. You have one price, and you get everything from QoreStor."
  • "The cost is per terabyte, and overall, the cost was reasonable when compared to some competitors."
