We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The capacity to migrate machines onto VPLEX is great — it's very clean. We can migrate machines and add arrays easily.""Mobility enables us to carry out an internal migration of data.""Its mirroring capabilities allow for data to be mirrored across two different data centers, so if one center were to crash or fail, the other center could take over and keep everything running smoothly.""Dell's technical support is awesome. We received instant support from EMC as long as we had an active contract.""The best feature of VPLEX storage is its ability to consolidate storage. It also provides the highest RPO and RTOs for replication technology. VPLEX enables application mobility.""The solution works well. It's very reliable.""Storage virtualization and geographic resilience for Metro Sans, plus a great performance improvement.""The most valuable feature is deduplication, as we have no duplication in the snapshots."

"It's very easy to set up, and within 40 minutes, you can apply storage notes in Azure.""NetApp's XCP Migration Tool... was pretty awesome. It replicated the data faster than any other tool that I've seen. That was a big help.""This solution has made everything easier to do.""NetApp's Cloud Manager automation capabilities are very good because it's REST-API-driven, so we can completely automate everything. It has a good overview if you want to just have a look into your environment as well.""One of the most valuable features is its similarity to the physical app, which makes it familiar. It's almost identical to a real NetApp, which means you can run all of the associated NetApp processes and services with it. Otherwise, we would definitely have to deploy some hardware on a site somewhere, which could be a challenge in terms of CapEx.""The ease of use in terms of how the product works is valuable. We are able to work with it and deploy the storage that we need.""The fast recovery time objective with the ability to bring the environment back to production in case something happens.""We use the mirroring to mirror our volumes to our DR location. We also create snapshots for backups. Snapshots will create a specified snapshot to be able to do a DR test without disrupting our standard mirrors. That means we can create a point-in-time snapshot, then use the ability of FlexClones to make a writeable volume to test with, and then blow it away after the DR test."

Cons
"The price is a problem with EMC due to the fact that it's more expensive than the other vendors.""The initial setup is complex.""There can be delays in getting performance reports.""Dell VPLEX should improve its integration and user interface and be easier to configure.""Today, it needs a huge effort that is not acceptable during disaster recovery.""With Dell VPLEX, there are some bugs with Broadcom.""I would like to have site-to-site replication capability for applications.""VPLEX hardware migration to spare equipment in case of major disruption."

More Dell VPLEX Cons →

"The support is good in general but the initial, front-line support could be improved. Because I have already been using the product for so long, when I call support I would rather talk to somebody who is a little bit more advanced or senior, rather than talking to the first-level support. Usually, it takes some time to reach out to their senior support.""Multipathing for iSCSI LUNs is difficult to deal with from the client-side and I'd love to see a single entry point that can be moved around within the cluster to simplify the client configuration.""I would like some more performance matrices to know what it is doing. It has some matrices inherent to the Cloud Volumes ONTAP. But inside Cloud Manager, it would also be nice to see. You can have a little Snapshot, then drill down if you go a little deeper.""The only issue we had lately was that outside our VPC we could not reach the virtual IP, the floating IP. I heard that they have fixed that...""The automated deployment was a bit complex using the public APIs. When we had to deploy Cloud Volumes ONTAP on a regular basis using automation, It could be a bit of a challenge.""They definitely need to stay more on top of security vulnerabilities. Our security team is constantly finding Java vulnerabilities and SQL vulnerabilities. Our security team always wants the latest security update, and it takes a while for NetApp to stay up to speed with that. That would be my biggest complaint.""One difficulty is that it has no SAP HANA certification. The asset performance restrictions create challenges with the infrastructure underneath: The disks and stuff like that often have lower latencies than SAP HANA itself has to have.""I would like to see better integration with Active IQ."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We struck a great deal with Dell EMC, so for us, VPLEX was not very expensive."
  • "VPLEX is a little bit expensive in my personal opinion."
  • More Dell VPLEX Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Purchasing through the AWS Marketplace was good, but it was a test system, not a real purchase."
  • "We purchased the product directly from NetApp."
  • "The deal with the seller was acceptable; the pricing is reasonable."
  • "The AWS consumer-based pricing model makes it easy for developers to use their credit cards to spin up virtual servers immediately."
  • "Compared to other storage vendors, NetApp, is not always able to compete with their pricing. Yet, we acknowledge the ease of use ONTAP brings with the AWS integration."
  • "They allow a special price if you are working closely with them. Since we have a lot of NetApp systems, we got some kind of discount. That's something they do for other customers, not just for us. The price was fair. In addition to the licensing fees, you're paying Amazon for your usage..."
  • "The standard pricing is online. Pricing depends. If you're using the PayGo model, then it's just the normal costs on the Microsoft page. If you're using Bring Your Own License, which is what we're doing, then you get with your sales contact at NetApp and start figuring out what price is the best, in the end, for your company."
  • "In addition to the standard licensing fees, there are fees for Azure, the VMs themselves and for data transfer."

Top Answer:For enterprise customers, it's a very cost effective. But in the SMB segment, yeah, pricing is a little bit challenge for your time.
Top Answer:There's not much scope for improvement. I think the solution is more restricted with the underlying cloud. The performance of the single instances depends on the performance of the underlying cloud… more »
