We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Superdome X is a system that can compete in terms of performance and uptime, but it's now standard. That is the great value. There are competitors like IBM, for example, but IBM has a propietary operating system. With Superdome X, you have a system that can run Windows, Red Hat, or VMware, but in a mission critical server.""This product is very reliable.""One of the really cool things about Superdome is, depending on the model you choose, you can put 8-16 blades in it.""We've got a few of them, because we needed some really large machines. So far, they've been working pretty good.""SDX gave us a very large RAM and we need that for the large-scale graph-handling applications.""The most valuable features of HPE Superdome X are speed, performance, and resilience.""I like the robustness of the machine. Similar performance could likely be achieved with other configurations, but this machine is very stable."

"HPE Synergy is a stable solution.""I love the satellite architecture for the Virtual Connect. I think this is great. I love the storage drawer, which you can present volumes to any compute node within the same frame.""We build out a whole stack at one time, so we don't have to worry about it until that stack is full, then that gives us time to get the next one ready.""The flexibility to link them together and configure them gives us the ability to scale out easily, to add more compute resources as needed... The way that they're scalable and flexible means we can add additional servers in quickly... We're not spending a lot of time doing procurement and building of physical servers.""It is really easy to use, because it's GUI-based. It is not command line based, like mainframes.""Give us the ability to seamlessly migrate from one operating environment to another within minutes, which is invaluable.""The most valuable features are the evolution of our existing HPE portfolio, the integration with our existing tool sets, and the enhanced capabilities that OneView bring.""The Synergy environment provides us with one view. We're able to manage the entire stack, top to bottom, from that single view."

Cons
"I know we support Windows and I think it's Red Hat, and I'd like to see more OSs supported.""I'd like to see the onboarding of some storage class memory to really expand the already very large RAM, into something that could be even much bigger.""In this specific model, it could be beneficial to have a server configuration similar to Cisco, like the kind offered in HPE Superdome Flex X280. The ability to separate the chassis is important because we are forced to use two chassis even with lower loads. So introducing more flexibility in the Superdome environment would be helpful.""HPE Superdome X can improve by adding a lot of cloud capabilities to allow this solution to be cloud-ready in case the customer wants to move it to the cloud.""It would be helpful if you could do the maintenance completely online.""What would make it better from my point of view is if HPE spent more time on testing with the actual built-in Red Hat Linux drivers, as opposed to always trying to say, "Use our driver.""

More HPE Superdome X Cons →

"Synergy could probably do some code enhancements to simplify the deployment a bit more.""The only issue that we had was our rack was too small. The product is heavy, so it took a lot to get it in there.""The expansion was complex, because adding a second frame onto the original frame caused an outage.""The solution should support Cisco or other vendor interconnect models.""The lowest echelon of HPE technical support is sadly uninformed, unknowledgeable, and dependent on wrote scripts. They won't answer a question without going through their script. It's not like you're actually talking to somebody who has any depth or time using any of the equipment.""The deployment time of a system through OneView is pretty slow, but apparently that's being addressed in an upcoming update.""ICMs could be better in this model. When you look at its competitors, the most critical point is the throughput. HPE is the best with the ICM module, which is an interconnect module that connects the servers of the frames to the LAN and SAN. HPE Synergy should also support the latest processors provided by Intel.""Over the two years of using HPE Synergy, we have found some hardware failures that are frequent in the SOP models, CNA cards, and converged network adapters. These failures are frequently happening for a lot of the customers."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "There is a very expensive one-time cost with no licensing fees."
  • "The pricing is not very cheap. I would rate the pricing a seven out of ten, with one being very inexpensive, and ten being very expensive."

  • "The Nutanix platform came in a little more expensive than the Synergy."
  • "The solution has reduced our IT infrastructure costs because we have had to buy less services than we used to."
  • "In our whole environment, the cost is in the millions. On this particular chassis, the annual cost is 12 blades times approximately $40,000."
  • "The biggest cost is the VMware licensing."
  • "We do a biannual renewal. I know how much that renewal is, but I don't know how much it breaks down to be just Synergy, since we have our VMware, all of our physical equipment, etc. all rolled up into one renewal, which is a little over $300,000 every two years. However, only a subset of that is the Synergy product."
  • "There was at least about a 20 percent savings in cost over our purchase based on the purchase price of the compute modules themselves versus what we've had to pay before. It was significantly less."
  • "Synergy has lowered our total cost of ownership significantly. I would say ballpark around 25 percent, maybe more."
  • "We bought everything outright to start with. We don't do much consumption-based stuff."
