Q&A Highlights
Question: Which solution do you prefer: Symantec DLP, Proofpoint DLP, or Microsoft Purview DLP?
Answer: Data loss prevention (DLP) is an important security technology that can help organizations protect their data from unauthorized access, misuse, and data loss. DLP solutions are designed to detect data breaches and alert companies about the possible security risks associated with data storage. They can be used to block data transfers or restrict access to data stored in cloud-based data stores. In addition, DLP solutions can be used to monitor data usage and detect malicious behavior such as data theft or data leakage. By implementing data loss prevention technology, companies can protect their data from external threats and unauthorized access. When it comes to Email Cloud Security, Symantec DLP, Proofpoint DLP, and Microsoft Purview DLP are all strong contenders. But which solution is the right one for you? Well, that depends on your specific needs. If you prioritize ease of use and scalability in your Email Cloud Security solutions, then Symantec DLP is the right choice. If, on the other hand, you value data privacy and protection then Proofpoint DLP is a better option. Finally, Microsoft Purview DLP stands out for its comprehensive analytics tools that give users greater insight into their Email Cloud Security performance. So which Email Cloud Security solution do you pick? Choose wisely! It could make all the difference.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable features are identifying sensitive data and issuing alerts.""Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention's responses are faster. Its installation is also reliable. The security score helps with the security part.""There's a good amount of documentation in case you run into any problems.""For Purview's natively integrated compliance across Azure, Dynamics 365, and Office 365, I would give it a 10 out of 10. It provides all the insights and information.""It has helped our clients to reduce the time to action on insider threats because it can be integrated.""I rate Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention's stability a ten out of ten.""Because everything is on Microsoft and we use Azure, integration with the product is easier. That's the most important thing when you use many Microsoft products. It's easier to integrate everything in one place.""The auto-labeling feature is definitely the most valuable feature. It goes in and labels the documents for you in different repositories. It covers the Outlook and Exchange repositories along with SharePoint and OneDrive. It is really helpful in those areas."

"The most valuable aspect of Symantec DLP is its powerful policy system.""The product is very stable.""DLP's most valuable feature is that it's more granular in terms of creating block-based policies, which gives you more options to create policies in a filtered way.""The product is very robust.""We are able to contain our confidential data in our environment.""The product helps with blocking sensitive data transmission and permission management.""DLP's most valuable feature is compliance.""The tool's really working well, and the agents are good."

Cons
"The scalability, in terms of the portal, could be more user-friendly. Sometimes I have faced difficulties in identifying the options.""There is a need for improvements, particularly in ensuring that file-based recognition is more reliable and comprehensive.""There is no AIP for Linux systems. That's a setback. Another thing it's lacking is libraries to work with Python. It has libraries for C# and C++, for example, but not for Python and, these days, Python is very useful.""There is a lot of ambiguity when you are setting up labels, such as sensitive information labels. It is a little daunting at first if you don't have prior knowledge, and there is a little bit of a learning curve for setting up the labels. Some of the setup wizards could be more helpful from an AI perspective. They can streamline the setup through more AI technologies so that you don't have to jump through so many hoops and different menus and dropdowns. It would be useful to have a setup wizard that is more hands-off and engaging for setting up the information type labels. If you tell them this is what we're trying to protect, it should basically start to lead you down that path of best practices. Such a feature would be great.""I would like Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention to be on the source code or SQL databases. It is difficult to do classification and labeling when you have a third-party source code or a third-party Oracle database. It is seamless when it comes to Microsoft documents but is not so with third-party source codes. Microsoft needs to work on it a little bit more.""The platform can be challenging to navigate and has the potential for improvement.""Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention's licensing is expensive.""Technical support is awful."

More Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention Cons →

"The Symantec DLP solution is very complex, and installation requires many components.""The one downside for Symantec is that, due to its transition from Symantec to Broadcom, there's been a lot of changes. I am based in the Philippines and we don't have a contact person locally for any Symantec.""This product is very powerful but it is very complex, so making it simpler to use would be an improvement.""Data Masking could be improved.""That fine tuning has to be done for the customer as well as the vendor. So if I take Symantec DLP, we have to have some final fine tuning but we may need some time developing this depending on the customer. This is an area where something can be done to improve the product.""The upgrade process is convoluted. The server and database software must run in line with third-party providers like the Oracle database. If an Oracle database reaches the end of its life, then servers must be decommissioned, and you need to bring new servers online. When the maintenance packages are deployed to the management server, they don't get pushed to the detection servers. Each detection server must be manually installed rather than automatically made from a single server. If it's a large enterprise, you need to manually install it or use a GPO or some other technology, which I never use.""Agent configuration should be improved for easier interaction for users, particularly by allowing configuration changes to be done on a grid.""There are some features that are not available which are required by every data loss prevention solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is a part of our Microsoft licensing. We pay for a yearly renewal. Its price is reasonable for the size of the organization we are. It is fairly competitive, and you get what you pay for. We have an E5 license, and a part of understanding the E5 license is to see what all you get with it. If you really look at it from that standpoint, you get a lot of value. You have Defender and all its security features in there as well. Their licensing is fairly flexible. They have different programs. We've seen ones where you could pay for up to three to five years in advance. There is also a monthly pay-as-you-go type of deal, but we're doing a yearly renewal and fixing the budget."
  • "Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention is part of a bundle and is not sold as a standalone product."
  • "The product has the best price-to-performance ratio."
  • "It's a little bit pricey compared to competitors, but it's not too high."
  • "We are using the E3 license for Microsoft 365 with the E5 compliance license add-on."
  • "The pricing is reasonable."
  • "I am satisfied with the tool's pricing."

  • "The pricing and licensing are based on per user endpoints."
  • "The pricing is competitive and not pricey. We also receive corporate discounts."
  • "We are happy with the pricing and licencing."
  • "In terms of pricing, Symantec DLP works with Oracle Database. Oracle Database licensing is much more expensive than other databases. That might be a drawback for customers. The pricing is on a yearly subscription basis."

    Overview

At Microsoft, our mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. Our mission is grounded in both the world in which we live and the future we strive to create. Today, we live in a mobile-first, cloud-first world, and the transformation we are driving across our businesses is designed to enable Microsoft and our customers to thrive in this world.

Keeping sensitive corporate information safe and compliant has never been easy. But today, you’re faced with a totally new set of data protection challenges. Sensitive information is leaving the safety of your corporate network as more employees share files over consumer cloud storage services and access those files on their own mobile devices. The number of targeted cyber attacks continues to grow, as cybercriminals develop effective new methods for defeating traditional security measures and stealing corporate information. And as all of these factors converge, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage corporate information and protect it against loss and theft.

Symantec Data Loss Prevention (DLP) provides a comprehensive approach to information protection that embraces today’s cloud- and mobile-centered realities. With DLP, you can:

    • Discover where data is stored across all of your cloud, mobile, network, endpoint, and storage systems

    • Monitor how data is being used, whether your employees are on or off the network

    • Protect data from being leaked or stolen—no matter where it’s stored or how it’s used
