We performed a comparison between StarWind HyperConverged Appliance and VxRail based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two HCI solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."The features that I found most valuable are ease of use of the software that StarWind offers - with the first setup being a bit painful."
"It has given the company an almost zero possibility of downtime."
"We are running Hyper-V on twin servers in failover, and being able to manage servers from anywhere I need to, virtually, has been a game changer."
"StarWind allowed us to deploy highly available shared storage within our budget."
"The ROI is great on this product."
"The management and monitoring have been very easy since the solution's dashboard is very simple and user-friendly."
"The product only requires two VMWare ESXi host servers versus three host servers for VMware's comparable solution."
"Without the need for any downtime, enterprises can simply grow their storage infrastructure using StarWind Virtual SAN by adding new servers or disks to the current infrastructure."
"We have found the live migration to be the most valuable feature. It allows us to seamlessly maintain our servers, as well as have peace of mind if something goes wrong."
"StarWind's proactive support is my favorite feature."
"Their support team is extremely helpful, and they are pretty friendly and knowledgeable."
"In our experience with StarWind, the support has been by far the most valuable feature."
"The solution has provided our company with a fully redundant virtual environment at half the cost of a traditional SAN implementation."
"We have the ProActive Premium Support and it has reduced our monitoring efforts. It has been very useful. They have been able to detect things such as when there's an issue with the cluster or they're getting some kind of weird reading that I have no idea about. They're really quick to let me know about it and even set up a schedule to address it. I've been very happy with their level of support on that."
"The redundancy of two identical nodes that can run alone allows us to have truly "no single point of failure" in our computing and primary storage infrastructure."
"With StarWind's Proactive monitoring we can go about our day helping our customers and not have to worry about our cluster's health."
"For me, VxRail's most valuable feature is its life-cycle management."
"I have found the vSAN is highly flexible. The documentation is good and the interface of the solution is responsive and fast. The interface has everything you need to manage the solution, such as the VxRail and VMware integration. You can manage the hardware from within the VMware plasma pan."
"The most valuable feature is its high performance."
"We are very happy with the purchase, and it works well. It is fast. We went with the full-flash version, meaning that we have SSDs. So, we can build a Windows virtual machine in two minutes. We were surprised when we first tried to do that."
"The technical support from Dell was very good."
"The updating of the features was one aspect of the solution that made us decide to use it."
"The update capability of VxRail is crucial for us."
"VxRail performs well in the VDI environment."
"The StarWind Management Console is available only for Microsoft Windows/Windows Server, and should also be available for Linux and macOS, as it would reduce implementation costs."
"I'd love to see native export of metrics (via Prometheus or something of that nature) to allow us to get more metrics available on our existing dashboard software."
"There is no IPv6 support. That is our only issue at this time."
"The only thing that I have any difficulty with is that in order to perform upgrades, it is required that the SANs be detached from the Hosts before that can happen."
"Diagnostics information or alerts on the state of systems could also be implemented to give more visibility."
"StarWind relies on the underlying OS to manage the "SAN files" whether that would be a RAID volume, software RAID (such as LVM), etc. It would be useful if StarWind could incorporate the actual physical drive management inside of the solution, similar to Storage Spaces Direct."
"We don't really have any issues with this product."
"The configuration can a bit cumbersome."
"The only area that the product could improve would be user training."
"We struggle a little with capacity management with the StarWind Hyperconverged appliance."
"Maybe they could have a support portal that you can have direct access to a current support representative."
"Multi cluster support for their Command Console would be very beneficial. Currently, you can only work with a single cluster at a time. The console is new so I expect much growth in this area in the near future. The other area that could be improved is the tech support locale."
"One area for improvement of the solution is that I had to get Windows, which I really didn't want because of the extra maintenance or overhead, as well as viruses, etc. It's going to take time for them to get their Linux to that point. They already have Linux but it's not as mature and they don't really support it on HCAs. They have it for individuals who want to use it on their servers, but not on HCAs."
"CSVs require the storage to be configured through iSCSI, even though the storage is local."
"Shipping options should be explained in detail and offer more white glove delivery options even if it comes at an additional cost for some SMBs without docks."
"Product shipments did have a few bumps along the way, but that's to be expected when using any shipping company."
"When using hybrid nodes, such as VxRail, there should not be compression and deduplication, only in All-Flash nodes."
"I would like to see Dell take a crack at simplifying the process of moving from a node to a cluster and assembling everything into the appliance. It would be great if Dell could provide a pathway where a customer could actually install it without the certifications. Of course, I can't say how you would dumb down something so complex."
"The technical support is good but could be better."
"It would be an improvement if VxRail could be integrated with some other hypervisors and not just with VMware."
"What I did not like so much was the amount of VMware that you have to put in your system related to the VxRail."
"They should add automation and activation going forward."
"I would like them to include an easier solution to host its own DNS. When they changed to version 6.5, they took out the easy features of letting the rail be its own DNS. You can still trick the system and make the VxRail Manager another one of the rail-required VMs become the DNS, but it's a lot of extra work. I'd like to see it put back into the UI."
"Next release, we would like to see online applications."
