A backup solution for endpoints and virtual servers
Previously, I also used Commvault alongside Avamar. Commvault is very challenging to configure. It is resource-intensive, whether as software or an appliance. Unlike Dell, they don't offer their own OEM box but rely on other servers. If clients purchase their servers and storage, Commvault only provides the software for installation on those systems. Furthermore, Commvault blames server or operating system quality issues, adding to the complexity. I encountered numerous problems with Commvault. Avamar is more satisfactory since all support responsibilities fall under Dell, simplifying the process compared to dealing with multiple vendors. This centralized support from Dell has been reliable over the past seven to eight years.

Seamlessly integrates with the other products in your library, but is less advanced when compared to competitors
Primarily, we've been using it for backups. We've focused on backing up volume groups and files on both Linux and Windows machines. While I'm not certain if it supports VM backups, that's where our main focus has been There was an incident that occurred at some point, and our final option was to…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature for me in Dell Avamar is the automation, which is good for completion."
"Graphically, it's very user interactive. It's got a very nice interface."
"Every product is good and bad, but its claim to fame is that it is scalable. We're doing more than 3,000 VMs. Every single night a complete image backup to disks and replication are easily done in under four hours."
"Effective in protecting the virtualization system and end points."
"It's a good solution."
"The solution is very user-friendly."
"I like Dell EMC Avamar's compression of data."
"It's stable and offers good performance."
"The most valuable features of this solution were the features we worked most with which were telemetry, and the scheduler."
"It is a stable solution. Stability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten...The initial setup process for the solution is easy."
"The most valuable feature is the capability to back up our SQL server."
"It's user-friendly and not overly complicated to configure."
"I like that Micro Focus keeps a separate catalog of our data."
"This solution is quite stable because we have only three users."
"It's a good product that's pretty easy to use."
"The command-line interface is user-friendly and well documented in the reference guide."

Cons

"It lacks support for certain plugins, like SAP HANA, for example."
"Dell Avamar could improve by adding more backup features."
"We don't trust the product 100 percent. Kaspersky has many features Dell Avamar doesn't support, such as granular backup and history."
"Desktop-laptop backups and backup over the WAN needs lot of improvisation. For DTLT there must be a provision to push agents from the management console."
"I want to see a more user-friendly and administrator-friendly Dell Avamar. The solution also needs a better UI and dashboard."
"The interface has room for improvement. It's not ideal right now."
"The user interface needs to be improved. It's not as good as it could be."
"The solution, in the future, should offer support for mobile."
"OpenText Data Protector is more difficult to use and configure than OpenText VIM. The user-friendliness of OpenText Data Protector has to be increased, and the complexity of the tool needs to be reduced."
"I do not think that this solution is relevant in the current IT market. They have not upgraded their features and functionalities which makes it difficult for them to remain competitive."
"The challenge is that we can't restore a single file from the VM in the data process when we do VM backups. But with Commvault, you can restore a single file even if you have a VM snapshot package. That's one drawback of this tool. When we do VM backups, it should help us browse the VMs to restore a single file instead of doing the complete VM restore."
"This solution is not scalable."
"It would be ideal if they could improve their level of support."
"Faster VEAgent Restores"
"The GUI could be updated. The GUI hasn't changed since version 6. It's on version 10 now. The reporting could also be better. Also, while Data Protector is excellent for backing up physical hardware, it needs more features for backing up VM images because many environments use hypervisor."
"It can occasionally be inaccurate in its backup/recovery time estimates."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is expensive."
"It was very expensive before, but after integrating it with Dell EMC Avamar Data Protection suite licensing, we are getting better discounts."
"The price is the main thing I'd like to see them change. If they can come down in price, that would be a good thing. It's very cost competitive in the entry level range, because Veeam pricing is much cheaper than Avamar."
"There are licensing costs for Dell EMC Avamar and it is paid annually."
"The solution is not expensive for the value one gets."
"It is expensive. The maintenance comes with it for five years. So, you buy the whole thing for five years, and your maintenance is included with it, but it's a big chunk of change upfront. We like capital expenses because we can CapEx them. We pay once every five years, so we spend a big chunk of change. You'd have to divide that out by the five years to come up with how much it costs. It's just about three-quarters of a million dollars for five years."
"This is a fairly expensive solution. It cost approximately 21,000 each year."
"I rate the pricing a seven out of ten because it is expensive."
"The solution requires paying for a license."
"There is a perpetual license involved in addition to support which needs to be renewed annually."
"Avoid using many LTO drives; when using fewer drives, the price will be extremely good."
"Data Protector's pricing is very competitive and we have no issues in this regard. I would give it an eight out of ten in terms of pricing."
"We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."
"It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
"The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
"It is more affordable compared to other vendors."
