Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is easy to set up.""Good text reading ability.""Everything is happening on the layout or display that is used by the user. Eggplant prompts processes, like 'click here,' or 'look for this image.' Eggplant makes it possible for QA people and BAs, working in the actual display, to check if the software is providing the right images, the right text, and the right results. They don't have to go inside the code or to the TCP/IP layer. Everything is happening at the highest level.""The main feature of Eggplant Test is that it can do fully automated web testing and app testing.""The most valuable feature is the ability to create code from a flow chart, and then run the code through it.""Its scalability is good. It is useful for desktop applications, and it also uses OCR and does image recognition.""We are able to now automate tests, which so far have been manual.""The solution is a stable one."

"Easy to use and easily scalable.""The most valuable features are tools like IntelliSense and ReSharper.""The most valuable features of the solution are its ease of use and availability.""One of the best documentation in the world.""The ability to quickly make your own components has been valuable.""It's great for the development of .NET.""The most valuable feature has been to store all our packages in one place including SSIS packages, SQL tables, TFS and SSR.""It is a good and user-friendly tool."

Cons
"If one area could be improved, it would be some of their documentation. In particular, some of their online help and user support documentation is a little bit out of date and could be revised and updated on a more frequent basis. Other than that, I haven't really found any issues or problems.""They need to update the Linux. I think it's kind of an outdated Java Swing application.""I would like to see standardized actions already built into Eggplant. For example, "wait eight seconds". That way, I wouldn't need to create it as an action. Right now, I have to program that wait and describe it as an action so that everybody knows it is an action that waits eight seconds... That way, somebody who is not familiar with programming processes like "if-else", or "for", or "while", would be able, from the first moment, and without programming, to put some easy-to-use, standardized, actions in place.""There was no free trial in it.""The language is too specific; it is just for Eggplant.""In terms of additional features, it would be helpful to have one package for all testing. You have the manager, the AI, then you have functional, and about 10 different packages for installing.""The IDE could be even more full-featured. Because I was a developer, I was very spoiled by either Visual Studio Code or Visual Studio for shortcuts. For example, I was able to say "ctor" and hit Tab and it would create a template of a constructor for me... It would be great, when I want to create a new function, if there were shortcut commands like those that helped create all of the functions, or if there were shortcut features to do any of the complex plans.""We found that we had issues regarding the VPN setup, which is one of the reasons that we did not purchase this solution."

"Sometimes Visual Studio is slow. It uses a lot of resources like memory and processing power. You should optimize the performance by only installing what you need on your machine. Don't install unnecessary things that will slow your machine.""Enhancing the support for web application testing and load performance would be an improvement.""The interface should be made attractive.""The server that we use is very slow so that is concerning for us.""The solution's documentation could be improved because it keeps disappearing from the solution.""One of the problems with this solution is you need to be highly technically skilled to operate it, it is not for everyone.""The solution’s stability could be improved.""Sometimes, the solution hangs, so its performance could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is scalable, but it is a matter of money in the pocket. You can scale it, but then you have to have additional licenses. The licensing approach of eggPlant is not the best."
  • "Make a smart decision about the number of developer- and execution-only licenses you purchase to maximize your budget. We found that going heavier on execution-only licenses has been a way to reduce our costs and maximize our ability to benefit from the software."
  • "End-to-end testing isn't possible for us because of the licensing problems. It's very expensive, so we only have two development/execution licenses."
  • "It probably has a yearly license."
  • "This solution is expensive when compared to the market. However, the reason it is more expensive is because of its stability, high performance, and for its support of any technology."
  • "Eggplant Test is a very expensive solution."

  • "The pricing is expensive."
  • "We pay for the solution annually and the price could be reduced."
  • "There is a paid version of the solution as well as a community version that is free."
  • "Visual Studio Test Professional is a very expensive solution."
  • "The tool is expensive in my region."

Visual Studio Professional Edition provides an IDE for all supported development languages. As of Visual Studio 2010, the Standard edition was dropped. MSDN support is available as MSDN Essentials or the full MSDN library depending on licensing. It supports XML and XSLT editing, and can create deployment packages that only use ClickOnce and MSI. It includes tools like Server Explorer and integration with Microsoft SQL Server also. Windows Mobile development support was included in Visual Studio 2005 Standard, however, with Visual Studio 2008, it is only available in Professional and higher editions. Windows Phone 7 development support was added to all editions in Visual Studio 2010. Development for Windows Mobile is no longer supported in Visual Studio 2010; it is superseded by Windows Phone 7.
