We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"As the client had acquired another company some distance away, they were concerned about having a single SAN in one location or the other. StarWind vSAN allowed us to keep a copy of the data local to each site without asking the client to pay for two SANs in addition to the two new servers they needed.""The biggest benefit was that it allowed us to provide SAN services on a limited hardware budget.""We can lose a site or even two of our three, and we would lose no data and have no outage.""The product has improved the ability to mimic physical SAN environments to demo scenarios and troubleshoot problems.""I like the asynchronous replication and failover features. They are what I'm primarily using it for. The asynchronous replication is helpful because our servers are backed up continuously throughout the day. If anything goes wrong we just fail over immediately. That is a very nice feature to have.""The product gave us a cost-effective way to deploy a highly available server environment.""The most useful aspect is the hyper-converged SD SAN and the ease to expand it by just adding cheap SSD or NVME disks.""I have found the graphical user interface to be the most useful thing about Virtual SAN."

"Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series is simple to use, user-friendly and has been best for our purposes.""I like Cisco Intersight.""Easily facilitates remote work opportunities with storage and compute resources.""It has reduced the time it takes to put the servers in production by half the time.""It's very easy to integrate with the ACI network.""The storage system is its most valuable feature. It has eliminated our entire need for having to worry about storage. We were storing a lot of syslog data and using a lot of templates in our data center. With the storage system, we are now saving an enormous amount of space.""It is a complete package. For any kind of on-premises hyper-converged solution, we usually have to separate networks, but Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series is a complete solution. It has its own network and storage. The storage part is the most valuable feature.""The possibility to share the workload is one of its most valuable features. We have many applications which have need of workloads only a few times in a month, so we share HyperFlex with them."

"Saves us a lot of space in the data center.""The support is highly responsive.""It is easy to use for management and operations teams because the tools are in one place.""Perfectly suits customers dealing with the combination of future storage needs and, at the same time, keeping up their computing power.""Dell PowerFlex is a one-stop-shop solution. Storage, compute, network, application monitoring, and support cases are all combined into one solution. It's very easy to administer compared to when you have a reference architecture where you need to design and build everything yourself. You would also then have to work with multiple vendors.""We've had no issues with scaling the solution.""The most valuable feature of this solution is integration.""The most valuable feature is high availability."

Cons
"vSAN's free version does not have a graphical user interface.""I would definitely like to see quite a bit more on the monitoring side of things.""I am expecting to see it more user-friendly in the future.""It would be helpful if StarWind provided more precise and detailed documentation explaining how to configure the solution in various scenarios, including the advantages and disadvantages of each.""For improvement, I would like to see how the software determines which networks to use for which purpose. It seems like the naming terminology changes a bit from here to there.""The system failovers properly on its own without too much worry.""The console is something that I believe could be enhanced.""There should be some kind of active monitoring connected to StarWind vSAN, so you will be able to act when needed."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"There should be the opportunity to create more than one div group""Its price could be better.""Deployment on-prem was quite difficult.""The solution's price could be affordable.""Lacks some integration and documentation could be improved.""I would have liked it to be able to back up the system to a cloud, to be able to work from any other place""The architecture separates data, computing, memory, and storage into different parts.""HyperFlex could be improved by reducing the minimum number of nodes supported from three to two."

More Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] Cons →

"The biggest issue with the solution is that it doesn't support Hyper V. It's a big problem.""We're also running Hyper-V virtual machines. But we recently discovered that migration of the Hyper-V virtual machines is a bit challenging. Maybe if Dell EMC can come out with a tool that will make it very easy for us to migrate the Microsoft Hyper-V machine, that may be an improvement.""I would like to see a more user-friendly interface.""I am not really impressed by the technical support of this solution.""The support of containers needs to be improved. At present, it is limited to VMware. There needs to be direct communication with the hardware rather than through a hypervisor.""There should be more functionality available for routing.""The solution must be more flexible.""The installation is complex."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "I would like the pricing to be cheaper."
  • "Comparable solutions with switches, storage, and services are cheaper than HyperFlex. It should be cheaper."
