We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We test live failovers every week, and so far, everything has been running smoothly without anything unexpected.""User friendly interface and straight forward implementation.""The solution provides great performance for the price it is listed with.""The access to our data is quicker and cheaper than it used to be in a traditional storage system.""It has been extremely stable for the three years we've been running it.""The StarWind VSAN is always up and allows us to move VMS to other nodes for maintenance, without interruption to service.""The vSAN provides full redundancy for storage while reclaiming some rack space.""I have found the graphical user interface to be the most useful thing about Virtual SAN."

"The most valuable features are the deduplication and the compression features.""The most valuable feature is that you can assign a volume to an off-shore workload on the fly.""When we compare it to normal hardware servers, I'd say it is quite easy to configure and deploy.""The most valuable feature is the low management overhead, and the lower skill set required to manage it.""What I like the most is that it is easy to implement, easy deployment and that it's easy to manage.""The solution's hardware is great.""The solution's best feature is its simplicity. It's so simple to deploy it. You've got the VMware, and it's own appliance. It is really helpful. The system is online within half a day and saves so much time."

"My customers use it for VDI. It has been very usable and very fast to use with VDI. On the VxRail side also, it has been very fast.""The tool's price is competitive and it is easy to use.""With VxRail, we can manage the life cycle of a virtual machine.""You don't have to worry too much about the hardware and you don't have to work on integrating a storage device. We instead have this as an all-in-one solution and everything is available as a box.""VxRail has improved out organization because we are trying to be a little more proactive and elastic. We are trying to change our conventional approach to development.""We were able to speed up our gaming software, which was a big plus.""The pricing is very, very good.""The manageability for controlling the console is the most valuable feature."

Cons
"Management tools could be improved, sometimes the usage seems to be slowed down and confusing. A native web interface could also be an option. I love to see in the future port of the software on a general Linux distribution like RedHat or Ubuntu in order to avoid windows license costs. I would also like to see features like erasure coding implemented. On the VSAN software, I would like to see some improvements in the storage pools (eliminate the usage of the file as a data container and use the raw partition).""We just need more integration with Veeam.""I am expecting to see it more user-friendly in the future.""StarWind really needs to market its product more.""StarWind Command Center's single-pane management solution only works with Hyper-V.""I would like to see an extensive set of cmdlets that could allow for easier automation as well as status management.""The interface of the management console of the StarWind Virtual SAN is complex, and it's difficult for the novice user to interact with the management having less knowledge or training in the product.""Perhaps more reporting features on the utilization, usage, and performance of the configured high-availability images and underlying physical disks would be helpful."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"There should be more provisioning capabilities within the solution.""The solution's storage size could be improved.""Currently, there is no support for the servers that are not in the cluster.""Dell needs to do a lot of work to simplify the maintenance and life-cycle upgrades for the product.""The cost of using the public cloud deployment is astronomical.""In the next release, I would like to see support for Docker and containers.""We are not always advised of new features or updates, so we must research to stay up to date."

More Dell XC Appliance Cons →

"Lacks integration of licenses so that it's an expensive solution.""I would like to have a unified platform where I, for example, can manage my 50 stores from a single portal in VxRail and be able to apply all the updates at once. I want to unify them into a centralized console.""if we're looking at costs, Nutanix will win because it allows flexibility in the type of hardware you can use.""Its price could be better.""They're getting better with their one-click upgrade. The success factor is now between 85% to 87% with the latest release. They should just continuously improve on that one-click factor and make it more seamless.""It's not really flexible with different use cases.""Right now, it's difficult for a non-technical person to participate in using the product. It could be made more consumer-friendly.""Pricing could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "The price point is very fair for a product in this category but can vary depending on the components selected within the family of products."
  • "We received a good price from Dell."
  • "The pricing is dependent on the technology and is in direct relation to the manufacturer and the components."
  • "The pricing is good."
  • "The pricing for Dell EMC solutions is quite expensive and not really made for small or medium-sized businesses."
  • More Dell XC Appliance Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "There is a permanent vSAN license included since it is required, but vCenter\ESXi host licensing should be validated in the purchase process."
  • "Most of hyper-converged solutions require additional licenses for the virtualization layer (like VMware)."
  • "Be mindful of your storage needs now and for the future."
  • "Compare the VxRail product to Nutanix. Nutanix has more features, but its pricing is higher."
  • "Compare it to what you spent on your last solution."
  • "We most likely pay yearly for support. The cost was justified by now because it stays up and I don't have to constantly open tickets. I probably rebooted the system once or twice. We haven't replaced any discs in the storage, we haven't had to do any disc replacements, so it just runs. You pay a little more but you cut down on the maintenance."
  • "The price is a little bit on the higher side but the system and management are so quick and easy that it's worth it for the customer."
  • "We were expecting Dell EMC to bring us something that would work very quickly and easily, but also be at a reasonable price point, and they did."

    Reviews from Real Users

VxRail is an all-in-one solution: "You don't have to worry too much about the hardware and you don't have to work on integrating a storage device. We instead have this as an all-in-one solution and everything is available as a box."

VxRail is remarkable: “The cover points feature in VxRail is remarkable. It's unique. It has an intervention failover system as well as an automatic failover system, reaching clusters existing in VxRail…

VxRail is a powerful performer: “...VxRail delivers a very high number of IOPS for a hybrid configuration or an all-flash configuration. The processors that are available in the Xeon family are very powerful. They are multi-core with typically 2 gigahertz, 2.4 gigahertz, or higher frequency, so the performance is very much appreciated.”
