We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The signature database and zero-day detection are Fortinet FortiGate's most valuable features.""The simplicity of the product is great. It's very easy to use, which is a compliment we get all the time in terms of feedback.""The solution is easy to configure and maintain remotely.""Its user interface is good, and it is always working fine.""This is a quality product with ok support, and it is better than the competition we've tried.""Its performance in fulfilling our requirements has been satisfactory.""Customers are more inclined towards FortiGate because of application control, web filtering, and anti-spam features. The support from the FortiGate team is good, and price-wise, it is affordable.""Their reliability and their policy of pre-shipping replacements when a unit has failed."

"The IPS module is my favorite because of the security advantage reached with a few clicks and its automatic updates.""The most valuable feature is the WAN optimization.""I rate the tool's stability a ten out of ten.""The stability of the solution is good. We haven't faced any issues at all while using the product.""Initial setup was quite straightforward, as we can simply head to the required sections to apply the planned network.""The tool's most valuable feature is its ability to deploy it on live physical hardware. Specifically, when providing firewall services for clients, we can leverage such hardware appliances to support multiple customers on the same hardware.""The solution offers good documentation.""I like the visibility and monitoring features because they're easy to use to monitor traffic. Features like geo-blocking and more have AI, and we're currently using all of it. But for now, we're only using geo-blocking, and we're able to block traffic from different countries. I also like that it's highly responsive. VM04 is also very powerful."

"It is deployed on the customer site, and we manage the firewalls on this side.""The pricing is reasonable.""The initial setup is pretty simple.""The technical support services are excellent.""I'm told the solution is the fastest, and, so far, I do find that to be the case.""The features we found most valuable are using the IDS and IPS during protection. The application filtering feature is great.""It is easy for me to go in and update settings, make changes, or add/remove rules or security.""Juniper is more flexible with the commit check and the commit confirmed command. The design of the forwarding and contract plan in the operating system is very important for the performance when we have very big traffic."

Cons
"There are some problems that support cannot give you a logical reason as to why it happened. For example, I had a case where I was dealing with a WhatsApp application that was giving issues. Technical support gave more than one reason it could be giving issues, but none of them solved the problem. Eventually I solved the problem, but it was far from the solutions that support had given.""For the migration, everyone has a firewall in use and I am selling Fortinet. Typically, I am replacing another firewall. Previously, there was a tool available to convert configurations from one firewall, such as Palo Alto, to Fortinet, but this tool is no longer free. If it could be made free again, it would be very beneficial.""We would like to see better pricing.""MTBF: Hardware failure is more common when compared to SonicWall or Cisco ASA.""The pricing could be reduced or include the first year warranty.""Technical support needs to be improved.""The logging details need to be improved.""Some features of Fortinet FortiGate are actually fee enabled that are inconvenient for deploying in production. Other issues relate to isolation with Cisco products and your server."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"The costs could be lowered.""Fortinet FortiGate-VM should improve its asset identification, wherein the device can identify assets on the network, like computers.""The graphical user interface should be enhanced.""The solution's web-filtering configuration could be better.""Sizing can be challenging for customers interested in using Fortinet FortiGate-VM.""They could provide more integration options with different platforms.""There were challenges during setup, and many of them were self-inflicted.""Right now, we have two data centers that are a thousand kilometers apart. It would be nice to be able to string them together."

More Fortinet FortiGate-VM Cons →

"The GUI really needs a lot of work, and it has got worse with successive version updates.""They really need to improve the GUI.""We worked with Cisco's support and Juniper's support and there are some differences, to be honest, Cisco is more available and is more competent at addressing our cases.""There are too many types of licenses, which can be confusing.""The solution could improve its technical support.""It is pretty complex to manage and could be easier.""They could provide support for cloud deployments.""I've talked to people that say Juniper now, as a device, can be a solution for a data center, but in the past, I have not seen this as being possible."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."

  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "The basic pricing in Austria is OK, but asking for special offers, e.g., NPOs, NGOs, trade up, and/or trade in, is always useful."
  • "It is on par with what you receive. It can be expensive upfront."
  • "It would be nice to have the ability to extend FortiGuard subscriptions at a reasonable yearly cost versus a bulk three year pricing."
