We performed a comparison between Rubrik and VMware vSAN based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out what your peers are saying about Veeam Software, Zerto, Commvault and others in Backup and Recovery."Drives the back-end through a powerful, well-documented API."
"The fact that the API is so available to us with the playground — there's an internal and public playground — is also valuable. We can write API calls — and although I'm sure there's a way we could hurt the data — we write those calls with a lot of certainty that we won't be destroying anything. We write these API calls using really easy mechanisms and generate automation a lot faster."
"The web-based approach is the most valuable feature."
"The archiving, off-of-box, is awesome. It lets you put your data where you want it and gives you the peace of mind of having more than one copy of it. And it's smart about the way that it does the archiving. It doesn't just copy one-for-one. It does all of its processing of the deduplication and compression before it sends it off to the archive, which helps with our cloud costs."
"It is easy to deploy."
"Instant recovery because it takes about 10 seconds to restore the VM from backup to production"
"What I like about Rubrik is its strong focus on security, particularly in combating ransomware threats."
"The main benefit is that we are secured in terms of workloads. We know that if we need to restore any VMs, or even any files inside a VM, that we will succeed 100 percent. This means that we don't need to spend much time administering the backup environment because we know it is self-healing and efficient. So, we are spending that time on something else, which is always a plus."
"The migration of servers feature makes server rack maintenance easy."
"VMware vSAN has greatly reduced refresh spending."
"Instead of going for SAN storage, customers can use the scale-up and scale-out features of VMware vSAN."
"Very easy to implement in any existing environment."
"Storage is expandable with no extra cost."
"vSAN Health is a feature designed to monitor the health and performance of the vSAN environment. It's crucial for us and our customers to frequently check on this to ensure everything is operating smoothly."
"The product's initial setup phase was very straightforward."
"Easy to deploy and manage."
"Needs integration with video CD (coming in the next release) and a multi-tenant GUI."
"Two areas I would like to see improvement in Rubrik are pricing and localization."
"They support Hyper-V and it works with our CloudOut, the cloud DR, but they seem to add features for VMware first and Hyper-V gets added second or sometimes several releases after the VMware feature comes out."
"The integrated reporting is not really that nicely built. The reporting functionality could definitely be a little bit more customizable from an administration perspective, with an easier to understand interface."
"I would like to have a built-in index searching ability of files/system files within the Rubrik interface to determine if a file or item exists, rather than just recovering it, and then doing a search for the file afterwards."
"The solution could improve by having fewer VM Stuns."
"It is not Windows Cluster-Aware at the moment or Exchange DAG-Aware. If they add support for these particular use cases, it would be even better."
"The licensing cost is quite high. That is something that needs to be worked out, because so many times it happens that the team does not have the budget or there are other issues at that time. Cost has become an important factor in deciding whether to continue with the Rubrik solution."
"In a future release, they could add micro-segmentation or security level features integrated into vSAN."
"This solution would benefit from better collaboration with Cisco for driver updates."
"I'd like to see better integration with the Update Manager, with respect to firmware updates for hardware."
"It could be cheaper."
"Lacks sufficient storage terabytes."
"The vSan product uses a software system called Vsphere to monitor the system. It is sometimes difficult to manage the PCs within the systems."
"The UI could certainly be better. The inside into what's actually going on with vSAN would be nice to know."
"I would like to see it be more hardware-agnostic. Other than that, the only other complication is - and it has gotten better with the newer versions - that lately, once you're running an all-flash, if you need to grow or scale down your infrastructure, it's a long process. You need to evacuate all data and make sure you have enough space on the host, then add more hosts or take out hosts. That process is a little bit complex. You cannot scale as needed or shrink as needed."
