We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The solution provides us with needed feedback on our IT infrastructure. It gives us really good quality of service when it comes to monitoring of available space and available resources. It allows us to preempt issues before they become a problem for the business.""Stable and scalable network monitoring tool. Installation is simple and straightforward.""PRTG gives us true visibility of the downtime of particular circuit functions. So if a circuit is up but not routing traffic, I will know with this tool. I can write a customized script for a sensor to detect specific things.""I like the mobility of the PRTG Network Monitor and ITOps Dashboard.""The most valuable feature of PRTG Network Monitor is the different monitoring probes available.""We like the alerting system, the SNMP monitoring and the customization of the bandwidth.""We have asked questions of their technical support and they have a very good response time.""The solution provides us response times to issues."

"I like the tool's discovery feature.""The most valuable features of ServiceNow IT Operations Management are ease of use, intuitive design, and ease of management, and its based on IT practices which are good.""It has been very useful for tracking. It has evolved a lot over time, and there is a single pane of glass where you can track and see everything.""You can improve integrations of the operation with the solution.""It is easy to use and simple to learn.""The most important features of ServiceNow IT Operations Management are the discovery service mapping and orchestration.""I am impressed with the tool's ability to track information in an easy way.""Has service mapping, impact management, metric intelligence and health of analytics."

Cons
"There is room for improvement in this solution for the performance and third-party monitoring protocols. They need to be updated to the latest ones.""Having a Unix implementation or Unix installation could be an improvement. Right now, it's based just on Windows, and that's a problem for some customers.""The icons on PRTG's network diagram are hard to find. For example, finding the icons for firewalls and servers is difficult, so we're struggling to create the network topology.""There seems to be a big jump from the basic scan to the really thorough scan. There is a big jump in the quantity of sensors it uses for certain things. One minute you might get ten and then the next you get 200. There seems to be a big jump between the two at times.""In terms of sensors and probes, it would be really cool if PRTG had a purely Azure-based solution. We had to install a probe on one of our cloud servers and then let that probe out from there. It would be really cool if it just monitored Azure without having to install something on the device.""The solution could be better and faster when it comes to performance.""In our organization, we encounter performance issues with our PRTG probe service. I saw documentation from the vendor or Paessler mentioning that there are limitations for WMI sensors. Other than that, we are okay with PRTG.""It probably has this already, but if it had a mobile app that would be helpful. For example, on a day like today when I'm out, if I could just fire it up and see green, green, green, green, green or red, that would be good."

More PRTG Network Monitor Cons →

"Service Mapping is a time-consuming process. The time and effort versus the benefits are very difficult to articulate to customers.""The solution's licensing model is a bit complicated. It should be simple and easy for people to understand.""The setup and deployment could be simplified, and the pricing could improve.""Service mapping is pretty limited.""Enhancing automation-related solutions, such as Wi-Fi, porting, machinery, and product automation would help to achieve better operational outcomes.""An area for improvement for ServiceNow IT Operations Management is making service mapping and discovery easier for non-IP devices.""My managers would say that the price is too high. We wanted to also have the visibility version of it, but it's too expensive for us. Going for visibility would have doubled up the price.""I would like more manual issues to have automated report-facing options."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
