We compared Graylog and Splunk Enterprise Security across several parameters based on our users' reviews. After reading the collected data, you can find our conclusion below:
Room for Improvement: Graylog could benefit from additional customization options and an improved rule-creation process. Splunk users recommended improvements in AI capabilities, user-friendliness, and analytics.
Service and Support: Graylog's customer service is generally well-regarded, with reviewers noting effective solutions and satisfactory experiences. While response times may differ, Graylog's support is considered superior compared to that of other products. While some users found Splunk support to be responsive and helpful, others reported slow response times and a lack of expertise. While some users found Splunk support to be responsive and helpful, others reported slow response times and a lack of expertise.
Ease of Deployment: Some Graylog users said the setup was easy. Other reviewers faced challenges, but these were easily resolved with help from the vendor’s support staff. Graylog is easier to set up in smaller environments, but it could get complicated in large clusters. Some users thought Splunk Enterprise Security was easy to deploy, while others found it challenging and needed assistance from Splunk engineers or third-party integrators.
Pricing: Graylog offers an enterprise edition and an open-source option with a daily capacity restriction. Some users said that data costs can be expensive. Some users consider Splunk Enterprise Security to be expensive, but others said the price is reasonable. A few users expressed concerns about the cost of scaling up the solution and managing large volumes of data.
ROI: Graylog can offer some cost savings. The precise ROI may vary depending on the organization’s size and use case. Users said that it’s challenging to calculate an ROI for Splunk Enterprise Security, and the return varies depending on individual circumstances. While some users have observed a substantial ROI, others have not actively explored or been engaged in ROI conversations.
"We're using the Community edition, but I know that it has really good dashboarding and alerts."
"Real-time UDP/GELF logging and full text-based searching."
"The build is stable and requires little maintenance, even compared to some extremely expensive products."
"The solution's most valuable feature is its new interface."
"This had increased productivity for the dev and support teams, because we are directly notifying them."
"Graylog's search functionality, alerting functionality, user management, and dashboards are useful."
"We have scaled from a single machine installation (a VM with a Graylog + ES + MongoDB) to (2 Graylog + 2 ES + 3 MongoDB). This was done smoothly with a minimal impact on logging."
"Storing logs in Elasticsearch means log retrieval is extremely fast, and full text search is available by default."
"The ability to quickly search logs, performance data, and other inputs has helped tremendously with troubleshooting."
"The scalability of the solution is amazing because it can collect a lot of data and you can have your own structure to monitor this data."
"We can do things in minutes instead of days."
"The ability to analyze huge amounts of sales data and accurate prediction of sales forecasting is the most valuable feature."
"Splunk has facilitated the correlation of information security logs to look for incidents which could cause damage to the company's infrastructure, as well as financial losses from leaks."
"The fact that Splunk is a platform and not just a SIEM solution is a key benefit."
"The solution is stable and reliable."
"On the cloud, we are pushing through less than half a petabyte of data. So far, it has been fairly stable because it runs on all the underlying AWS infrastructures."
"I would like to see some kind of visualization included in Graylog."
"Graylog needs to improve their authentication. Also, the fact that Graylog displays logs from the top down is just ridiculous."
"Its scalability gets complicated when we have to update or edit multiple nodes."
"Elasticsearch recommendations for tuning could be better. Graylog doesn't have direct support for running the system inside of Kubernetes, so it can be challenging to fill in the gaps and set up containers in a way that is both performant and stable."
"With technical support, you are on your own without an enterprise license."
"I would like to see a default dashboard widget that shows the topology of the clusters defined for the graylog install."
"The biggest problem is the collector application, as we wanted to avoid using Graylog Collector Sidecar due to its architecture."
"Over six months, I had two similar issues where searches were performed on field "messages". It exhausted all the memory of the ES node causing an ES crash and a Graylog halt."
"The training was mostly sales-focused, like how to monitor your sales. It was hard to then come back from doing the training and try to switch it to a cybersecurity focus because all the training we did was sales oriented. The basic training didn't really touch on any kind of cybersecurity use cases or anything like that. That would have been great to see in the training."
"The cluster environment should be improved. We have a cluster. In the Splunk cluster environment, in the case of heavy searches and heavy load, the Splunk cluster goes down, and we have to put it in the maintenance mode to get it back. We are not able to find the actual culprit for this issue. I know that cluster has RF and SF, but it has been down so many times. There should be something in Splunk to help users to find the reason and the solution for such issues."
"The threat management part is still lagging. There are some gaps in threat management. Other vendors have built-in threat management systems, but Splunk lacks the threat management component in its portal. The UEBA and everything else is perfect, but it lacks a unified threat intelligence and management part."
"The case management area of the ES could be improved. The ability to move cases through various stages and states. The ability to close a case would be key improvement."
"Splunk ES could have more pre-built integrations and rules. The detection is fairly accurate, but it depends on the rules you create. Splunk's out-of-the-box configuration isn't that useful."
"An improved user interface along with multi-tenancy support would be beneficial."
"The tool itself is very difficult to configure. It's great for its number of inputs, for the different types of systems devices, and things that it could collect information from. To actually make good use of it, you need a fairly dedicated team of people that have some reasonably good programming or modeling skills to be able to do the things that you need to do with it. Whereas a lot of the other tools are better packaged for that, and so require a lot less training and a lot less dedication."
"The GUI can be improved to include some of the capabilities that other BI solutions have."
