We compared Nakivo and Zerto based on user reviews in five categories. We reviewed all of the data and you can find the conclusion below.
Features: Nakivo is praised for its offsite backup to Synology NAS and seamless cloud integration. Zerto offers excellent data protection, and it’s easy to create VMs. Nakivo could benefit from improvements in its remote upgrade capabilities, SNMP features, and application backup. Users say Zerto users also like its real-time replication features. Zerto could improve cloud environment configuration, PowerShell scripting, and multi-site replication.
Service and Support: Nakivo's support is praised for being quick, considerate, and attentive. Customers have generally had positive experiences with Zerto's customer service, noting their quick response times and ability to resolve issues. Some customers have encountered slower response times and needed to go through multiple levels of support to get their issues resolved.
Ease of Deployment: Nakivo's setup was described as straightforward. A few users said the deployment was somewhat complex but not excessively difficult. The setup process for Zerto can be either simple or complicated, depending on the individual's experience with backup solutions.
Pricing: Nakivo offers lower licensing costs and a flexible pricing structure. Nakivo provides cost-efficient backups at a competitive price and even offers a free license for one year for up to five VMs. Zerto’s price tag is considered reasonable and in line with industry norms. Others said it was somewhat expensive but still worth the cost.
ROI: Nakivo ensures a favorable return on investment with a reasonable total cost of ownership and reduced testing expenditures. Zerto reduces risks while saving costs and time. It increases efficiency, ensures compliance, and helps businesses grow.
Comparison Results: Nakivo is a powerful, cost-effective solution that seamlessly integrates with the cloud, but it could use some enhancements in its SNMP features and remote upgrading functionality. Zerto offers top-tier data protection, excellent customer service, and real-time replication, but some users say its cloud and multi-site functionality could be better.
"Nakivo has been instrumental in strengthening our data security infrastructure."
"The product is very scalable, robust, has an easy setup with a short-duration deployment and good technical support."
"Nakivo offers direct support through the graphical interface and this is great to have if you need quick help."
"The solution offers reliable copying and fast recovery."
"Backup jobs are running smoothly every day with job reports sent to email after they finish each job. That gives us peace of mind."
"It is flexible."
"The features that I have found most valuable are that it is a cheaper price and user-friendly."
"The most valuable feature is the ease of creating a backup copy job to get the backups to a second device."
"It is incredibly granular and I really appreciate that."
"The UI is straightforward. It makes it very simple to group our resources and understand that our production workloads are covered because we can set them up as granular or as non-granular as we want."
"I've been fortunate enough not to need to rely on Zerto in an actual disaster, but we do testing every year. Sometimes, it's multiple times annually or at the year's end. It takes the recovery workflow, which would normally take a lot of planning, and reduces that to just a few minutes."
"We can use Zerto to help protect our VMs."
"I like the fact that Zerto is target agnostic. It doesn't care what type of storage it writes to. The journaling is also excellent. You can easily and quickly restore to seconds before an event. The immutable data copies feature is one reason we adopted Zerto. That's one of its selling points."
"Zerto has improved our restoration time and made it easier to test software upgrades. It has simplified tasks like decommissioning a site and replicating virtual machines from one location to another."
"It is way faster than just manually moving VMDKs, etc. It saves hours of time and a significant amount of money."
"The Move feature is the most valuable feature because it allows us to move the VM from our old environment to our new environment with minimal disruption."
"Sometimes, for some VMs and some Windows Server versions, specifically old versions (aka server 12 or older) fail due to the VSS writer error or locking file system."
"Compression and data deduplication are okay, but they could be improved."
"It would be good to have some Oracle database backup capability from the Linux OS in the next release."
"An improvement would be to include a general data backup solution that is not only for virtual machines."
"The only thing I could say is maybe some more options for job scheduling are needed."
"Implementing more comprehensive data deduplication and compression techniques could optimize storage utilization and reduce backup times, improving overall efficiency."
"Updating VM tools on a replicated VM could be better."
"The interface might be improved, but the interface of every product might be improved."
"It needs more documentation and automation features. I would like more documentation on designing an environment and network operations. On the automation side, I would like automation to clean up the environment in cases of a failed DR effort. An API interface to perform the DR exercise would also be nice."
"In terms of improvement, it would be helpful if the implementation team had a better best practices guide and made sure things like the journaling are very clearly understood."
"One improvement that could make it easier would be to have an easier way to track journal usage and a little bit more training around journal sizing. I've done all the training and the journal is still a gray area. There is confusion surrounding how it's billed and how we should bill clients. It would be easier if it had billing suggestions or billing best practices for our clients to make sure that we're not leaving money on the table."
"I would rate them an eight out of ten because not every response is as we expect. They do resolve the issue, but sometimes customers have unusual questions, and they are not able to say how exactly to fix that or how to do something,."
"Zerto should add the capability to replicate the same VM to multiple sites."
"The only issue that I observed was that depending on the number of virtual machines that are being replicated, you will have to provision the appropriate bandwidth for the link that the replicated systems will traverse."
"It would also be nice if you could update without having to download a new installation file for Zerto Virtual Manager. Within the app, it could prompt you to install and perform the installation from within the application. Generally, it's relatively easy to use, but it gets a little complex when customers have special network requirements and need to customize how long they want the save points to be retained. We need to work with the storage team on the backend to see what makes the most sense for the client."
"Zerto requires these thick provision walls for virtual machines that are always running."
