We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Adding and removing backup jobs using BDRSuite is easy and also includes great documentation.""It suits our needs, is versatile, and the functionality is there.""The most valuable feature is the Hyper-V backup - it's just one click. I don't have to worry about it.""I like the fact that BDRSuite can connect to VMware ESXi and automatically pull the virtual machines that I have in that environment. I also like that you can choose to back up the compute to the backup server or go straight to the cloud.""The most important features are the backup and the availability of the Universal Explorer. The in-transit compression is great.""We are now using it 24/7 because it is serving as an online backup, and very soon, the DR will activated on the product.""Its ease of use and price are most valuable. It is simple and straightforward. Someone who has never used any backup software will easily understand it from the first installation. It is that simple. Price-wise, it is much cheaper than its counterparts.""Quick backup and restore; very simple and understandable interface."

"This solution has a very good technical support department that is very responsive.""It is responding very well, and its performance is good. It has a lot of options. For backup, you can connect it to a cloud or a physical hard drive. They also provide an API for integration with different platforms and products. However, we have not integrated it with another product.""The implementation is straightforward.""The solution is stable.""Once the solution is integrated with the Exchange, you just click Exchange to back up that file.""The solution is very scalable. Whenever we grew, it was just a matter of adding new licenses, so it's easy to grow.""We are satisfied with the stability of the product.""The disk-to-disk paid backup feature is quite good, and file locking is a very important feature."

Cons
"The response time of the support could be improved a little bit. Sometimes, I need to wait for two or three hours to get support. With VMware, we can get urgent support in an hour. Other than that, I'm pretty good with BDRSuite.""We are still exploring its features, but we want to see more features that we desire over time.""The reports are at a basic level and there is room for improvement there. It only has historical reports and VM backup job-level reports.""The system died twice and it was apparently the result of corrupted disk sectors. I tried to work with tech support to fix it, but they essentially gave up. So twice, I had to rebuild our server.""Scheduling backups is challenging due to the poor quality of the UI.""I have not been impressed by the data compression of the backup images. They seem to take up nearly as much space on the backup drive as they do on the server.""I have had issues with new client registrations. There are frequent connectivity issues to the cloud servers. Multiple times, I have had to prove to support that it wasn’t a problem on my end. It always works out in the end, but it is troubling to have the same issues repeated across different clients. Issues eventually get escalated to the cloud team and are mysteriously resolved with no changes on my end.""It would be a great improvement if they can give a console to control the systems. All other vendors let you simply log in to the cloud console and control everything from there, but for Vembu, whether you choose Vembu Cloud Backup or Vembu Disaster Recovery, you still need to install the Vembu software on your on-premise system and configure it from there. It would be great if I can get a cloud console to manage the systems."

More BDRSuite Cons →

"A web console would be great because nowadays a lot of products are web-based and you can access the console from various environments. So I would recommend bringing this feature in the next solution.""Compared to other vendors, there are features that you will find not included in Veritas.""We've experienced some performance issues with Backup Exec. The backup jobs take too long to complete.""Veritas Backup Exec's dashboard feature could be enhanced.""The initial installation needs some effort.""The solution is too heavy and complex with 1,000 menus and options that make it messy rather than lightweight.""It is currently missing the dynamic backup feature for virtual machines, which is available in NetWorker. I can create politics in NetWorker to add virtual machines with specific tags, but I cannot do this in Backup Exec, which is a minus point for me. Currently, a user has to send a request to the Backup administrator to add a machine to the backup, but I should be able to create rules to automatically add a new machine to the backup. This kind of functionality is very important in current times, especially when we are using cloud solutions. I should be able to create more than one stream in a policy and specify how many streams I want to run in parallel in one policy. Currently, I have to manually create more policies to backup more than one virtual machine at the same time. Their support can also be improved in terms of response time.""At the moment, we have a very complex environment. It would take some time to deploy an environment like ours from scratch."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The product's pricing is a good value. Vembu is cost-effective versus using VMware Essentials. Regarding licensing, make sure you find the right workstation or server that you're going to install it on, and know the number of sockets it has, since the price depends on that."
  • "It is very cost efficient, effective. I’d say it's one-third the cost of Veritas when compared to the server backups. I even tried image backups on Acronis, but Acronis is very expensive. So these are some of the key reasons why I opted for it."
  • "We were able to take advantage of a promotional pricing campaign."
  • "The pricing structure is in line with other solutions. However, the option to replicate offsite to a unit at another office or at home is a big cost benefit. Instead of paying monthly for cloud storage, you replicate offsite for free."
  • "Pricing is fair enough. What was not clear enough in the documentation on the website was that that you're licensing per CPU socket and you are only licensing on the restore sockets, not the backup sockets. It's a bit technical, but it was very well explained during the demonstration that we had during the evaluation period."
  • "I prefer the way Vembu is licensed. When you look at Veeam or any other product, they price per node. Vembu is licensed per host. You just buy a host license and it backs up unlimited VMs within that host. The others charge per VM."
  • "Vembu is too expensive because they don't really have small-business pricing. This is a matter of personal opinion. They're going to tell you that they have competitive pricing because there are more expensive solutions in the marketplace, but there are better solutions in the marketplace that are more expensive. Their product is a better fit for small businesses, but they don't price it that way."
  • "The product's pricing is of good value. It was much more affordable than the alternative solution to it, which was Veeam. That would be the closest competitor, and between those two, Vembu was much more affordable. It seemed reasonable for what we needed to do."
  • More BDRSuite Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Pricing is similar, but they don´t offer the same options/technology."
  • "If your company can afford it, go for it."
  • "Depending on the scenario, it can cost less than half of the price of other methods."
  • "It is cheap compared to the other backup technologies. It all depends on the requirements."
  • "I would like to see a better licensing model. They changed it and it's just horrendous."
  • "Veritas licensing is somewhat expensive. They have to decrease the price."
  • "We are satisfied with the price of this solution."
  • "It's a good price for the product."

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by Veritas Backup Exec users.

An IT Network Analyst at a manufacturing company says, “The backup potential of the solution is very good. It's protected us in the past very well and allowed us to get up and running after an attack with minimal loss. As far as if we need to restore a file, the solution absolutely has improved the way our organization functions. It saves us a lot of time. We're backing up all of our servers with it.”

PeerSpot user Masoud G., Senior Network Administrator at MapnaBE, mentions, “I prefer to use a tape library and Veritas Backup Exec is fully compatible with different tape libraries. So I prefer this software. It also has easy user and file recovery.”

Kayode O., Chief Technology Officer at a tech company, explains, “This solution creates a differential backup to reduce storage requirements. This solution is not complex and you do not have to be too technical to use it. Veritas offers granular restore, which is an option that many other solutions do not have. It allows you to restore, for example, a single SharePoint document, rather than an entire site.”

Rowland G., Product Brand Manager at Epsidon Technology Distribution, states, “The one thing for the last 12 months which has been very good for Veritas was the instance-based license. This means that you're able to license per instance, not only per physical server. And also, the incremental backup which they introduced for virtual servers, where it makes it much quicker to restore, it just automatically is able to mount it back to the original backup. This makes it much quicker when you're doing the restore.”
