We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It's very easy to resize disks and they show up in VMware almost instantly.""We are able to execute maintenance on one server while the other is still running.""The solution provides great performance for the price it is listed with.""Their support goes above and beyond with the integration of their software.""The Windows-based StarWind GUI is easy to use and understand and integrates seamlessly with VMware's vSphere portal as well.""Integration with virtualization platforms helped us to resolve many issues we were facing while using the physical storage.""StarWind support has been great in helping resolve other issues not caused by their software.""The ability to run the software virtually on every virtualization platform and the ability to eliminate all storage vendor locking are the most valuable features."

"The solution is easy to use and to learn. It is well integrated with VMware.""Cisco provides the ability to configure BIOS, something that no one else can do, on a remote basis. That's really helpful sometimes. The bus-snooping alteration tool for BIOS is fantastic. That's one of the game-changing features that Cisco alone has at this point.""The flexibility is its most valuable feature; the ability to quickly deploy a number of help machines. It is not constrained by what we want to do.""Overall, the solution is extremely easy, flexible and secure.""I find the usability very valuable.""It increases efficiency, decreases the cost, and manages the network in one single way. That's the most important thing.""The solution can scale up and out.""The ease of use and the graphical user interface (GUI) are two of the most valuable features of this solution."

More Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] Pros →

"The replication technology can move data faster than EMC MirrorView and requires less bandwidth. The Storage Virtualization technology is the most mature in the market, outside of IBM’s Storwize (which has a lot of compatibility issues, and EMC’s very expensive VPLEX solution); and it works.""In our implementations, HDS Storage Virtualization has helped in migrating data with the least amount of downtime, compared to other storage technologies.""This solution allowed us to move from using standalone systems to having all our data center management in one place."

Cons
"There is no IPv6 support. That is our only issue at this time.""Scaling the product is fairly easy except for the computing aspect. It would entail another appliance. While not a show stopper, it isn't as easy as dropping in a few extra SSDs.""Updating the software can be a bit tricky.""I would like to see more monitoring and alert tools.""The cluster configuration is time-consuming and tedious.""New versions of this solution should be tested more thoroughly before the release as we had a few problems with one version due to a bug.""The documentation could be better.""I would like them to invest time in reducing the complexity of the startup and shutdown procedure."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"It needs improvements in terms of I/O. Sometimes I have felt it is slightly slow while we are trying to provision VMs or access VMs.""Lacks easy integration with other vendors.""The documentation could be substantially better, but the product itself does everything it needs to do.""A stretch function is really needed. Germans think that because of the high availability and the security that two data centers are better but we want edge all in one cluster. This is a needed feature, the cluster feature, and we'd also like to see a possibility for ROBO offices.""I would like to see more analytics. It could use better infographs in the HyperFlex Connect on how traffic is running in the network. If you were reaching any capacity issues on the Fabric Interconnects, it should be able to cool all of the servers and Fabric Interconnects, then possibly integrate it with, e.g., Nexus Series switches. This should all be available in a single pane of glass.""In the next release, Cisco should add more integration and management capabilities as well as some tweaks to the dashboard that make it more user-friendly. They could also add support for multiple hypervisors.""Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series could improve by having the documents be more readily available and the support could be more flexible.""Deployment on-prem was quite difficult."

More Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] Cons →

"HDS reaches a ceiling depending on model. The G200 cannot transition to G400, the G400 can transition to G600 but cannot transition to G800, which is the top-end model.""An update to its technology would be good. The G Series has been around for more than five years and HDS seriously needs to ramp up, since the competition has better performance at a lower cost with better features and functionalities. For example, it needs redirect on write Snapshot, preconfigured storage tiering with better IOPS, built-in deduplication technology on hybrid disk, etc.""An area for improvement would be technical support. In the next release, I would like to see more features added to make this a more complete solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "Cisco is quite expensive, but not in the initial first buy."
  • "Pricing is better if you buy more Cisco products."
  • "The pricing is a bit expensive."
  • "For customers in the private sector, this product can have a very high return on investment."
  • "If you don't look at the costs of the systems, the scalability is quite good."
  • "The price is a bit high. It could be better, but the product is worth the cost."
  • "I would like the pricing to be cheaper."
  • "Comparable solutions with switches, storage, and services are cheaper than HyperFlex. It should be cheaper."
