Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"You can build cheap, reliable, replicated virtual machines clusters using simple servers with an all flash disk or SAS\SATA hybrid tiered by performance storage.""It enables us to provide more solution options for our clients, with the reassurance that, when implemented, they will be efficient and stable.""Their support staff is comprised of true experts who can also communicate clearly.""The performance of the solution is accurate and concise.""When using new (warranty) servers, you can forget about the storage service for several years. The users will not even notice the failure of two servers out of three.""It also provides a high degree of mobility, as the virtual SAN can be moved relatively painlessly between on-site devices and the cloud.""The top-notch support before, during, and after deployments are better than any other vendor I have come across.""The software is easy to setup and manage, and the support is excellent."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Pros →

"I love the Cisco design, the visual interface to manage and use the platform.""The most valuable feature is that it is something small that can be more easily deployed than a full data center set of servers.""It is a stable solution...It is a scalable solution.""It is a complete package. For any kind of on-premises hyper-converged solution, we usually have to separate networks, but Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series is a complete solution. It has its own network and storage. The storage part is the most valuable feature.""It has reduced the time it takes to put the servers in production by half the time.""The management feature is the solution's most valuable aspect.""Support is very responsive.""It increases efficiency, decreases the cost, and manages the network in one single way. That's the most important thing."

More Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] Pros →

"It has been stable so far.""Most beneficial feature is simplicity, ease of use.""It's easy to use and has a very smooth onboarding process.""What's best about Nutanix Acropolis AOS is its simplicity. It's simple to install and simple to understand. The technical support and support portal for this product are both very good and very helpful.""Nutanix Acropolis AOS has very good stability.""Single-click upgrades are the most valuable feature. In the sector in which we work, it is tough to have downtime and arrange firmware upgrades.""Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure's most valuable feature is the flexibility to move the VMs easily, keeping everything together.""The most valuable feature I have found to be the Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV)."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pros →

Cons
"For someone entering the IT sector with little knowledge of storage, iSCSI, and virtual disks, they might not find the GUI immediately obvious.""It would be great if the Linux version of the management console offered the same features as Windows.""Feature-wise we are only waiting for the release of a "planned disaster" feature that would allow us to patch a hypervisor node without having to take the full storage offline.""A mobile app to sync up for overview and status would really be helpful.""For me, the product could be improved by it being made cheaper.""It would help if the manufacturer provided clearer and more detailed documentation, with explanations of how the application can be installed in various HA configurations.""The product can include a more simple way of synchronization after a forced shutdown as the current process has a few more steps to check that hosts have synchronized and this can be automated.""There is no Italian-language version of the software available."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"The initial setup can be complex.""Does not support the stretch cluster, and the interface is not good.""We would like to have the ability to not have to reboot while doing updates. Being able to work through updates with as minimal amount of impact to users.""You cannot just apply the VSXi updates. You are dependent on Cisco HyperFlex for metric services, analytics, and everything else. I don't like that dependency.""They should give us a little more information about how to use the CLI and offer more commands.""Stability is really poor, especially the storage stability. We lost data. There were disruptions of clusters and that's one big pain point of the solution. It's not stable enough, the documentation is not good, there's not much documentation available. For every call we need a tech engineer.""It is quite new solution, so it is not very stable.""In the next release, Cisco should add more integration and management capabilities as well as some tweaks to the dashboard that make it more user-friendly. They could also add support for multiple hypervisors."

More Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] Cons →

"The reporting section of the dashboard could be improved to include more detailed reporting about the servers.""Nutanix has a complex infrastructure, we have customers that consider VMware instead. Additionally, the performance could be better.""Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure lacks compatibility with certain older processors.""Nutanix needs to improve network features like Passthrough – SR-IOV. It could be improved by supporting SR-IOV, if they had that support, I would not have needed to implement the VMWare vSAN.""It would be ideal if it was more secure.""We did have some integration issues.""The licenses for Nutanix are very complicated.""The new features are not free. You need to pay for each feature."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Cisco is quite expensive, but not in the initial first buy."
  • "Pricing is better if you buy more Cisco products."
  • "The pricing is a bit expensive."
  • "For customers in the private sector, this product can have a very high return on investment."
  • "If you don't look at the costs of the systems, the scalability is quite good."
  • "The price is a bit high. It could be better, but the product is worth the cost."
  • "I would like the pricing to be cheaper."
  • "Comparable solutions with switches, storage, and services are cheaper than HyperFlex. It should be cheaper."
  • More Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."

The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →

With Nutanix you have the freedom of choice. You can deploy it with several server hardware vendors or completely in the cloud.

I don’t know Hyperflex at heart, though.

Also, support at Nutanix is outstanding.
