We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It allows me to configure High Availability and failover clustering with some fault tolerance, at a cost point that doesn’t break the bank for a small business budget.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the support. They are excellent and you can learn a lot from the support team.""It includes every feature that a traditional SAN offers and so much more.""It has been extremely stable for the three years we've been running it.""The instant failover, with vSAN copying data to the second node, allowed for the continuous availability of our applications.""High Availability is the best feature of product.""StarWind allowed us to deploy highly available shared storage within our budget.""It also provides a seamless and efficient solution for personal storage requirements, showcasing the versatility and scalability of my Virtual SAN configuration."

"It's very easy to integrate with the ACI network.""The compression and deduplication are very high. Therefore, we can use the size of the product more efficiently than other storage solutions.""Stretch cluster allows us to warranty a service for the customer.""On the VDI side, because the storage is local to the HyperFlex, it was very easy and convenient. The performance is exceptional.""Performance-wise, everything is good. So far, we haven't had any issues. There has been no downtime at all.""Cisco technical support is very skilled. From what I've had to access, there were quick responses and the necessary escalation.""It is very scalable. It is also very secure. Cisco's security portfolio is integrated with it, which makes it secure. It is a platform-based device. Its performance is also fairly good in comparison to any other solution.""The implementation process is okay."

More Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] Pros →

"One of the most valuable features of Nutanix is that it's easy to use. I love this solution—it's easy to maintain and update, and I think it's almost perfect.""We really love the Lifecycle manager and one-click upgrades.""Great flexibility and scalability.""In general, being able to patch and not having to pay for SanDisk is the best thing about hyper-converged.""In terms of scalability, adding a number of nodes, I find that it will not be any issues.""Simplified management: It provides us more time to work on other tasks.""The speed of the operations and of creation of VM is fantastic.""The stability is good. This is the number-one product in that regard."

Cons
"For someone entering the IT sector with little knowledge of storage, iSCSI, and virtual disks, they might not find the GUI immediately obvious.""Being able to run StarWind vSAN on top of any free UNIX operating system to build a resilient iSCSI/FTP/SMB storage system would be useful.""It is not very clear within the StarWind Management Console or the StarWind support documentation how to perform maintenance on a single node in a two-node HA cluster.""With data verification, I would like to know how does the solution perform validation of data being synced between two VSANs.""Improvements in documentation and support resources could enhance the user experience.""I found that certain browsers are not fully compatible with the administration web access portal.""StarWind Virtual SAN architecture is slightly complex and requires the team to carefully identify and study how the solution integrates with VMware vSphere.""I wish the sync after a failure, such as hardware failure or power-related issues, for example, was faster."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"HyperFlex could be improved by reducing the minimum number of nodes supported from three to two.""We are operating two clusters for site resiliency. I would like to support running redundant/resilient vCenter server instances on each rather than a supported external server.""A stretch function is really needed. Germans think that because of the high availability and the security that two data centers are better but we want edge all in one cluster. This is a needed feature, the cluster feature, and we'd also like to see a possibility for ROBO offices.""Cisco has to continue improve the management tools to provide a better command line interface with more functions. That would be better for administration.""It would have been nice if the product provided some cloud integrations.""I would have liked it to be able to back up the system to a cloud, to be able to work from any other place""We had a bit of complexity to think about how to migrate our legacy infrastructure into Cisco HyperFlex.""The solution could improve by having more customization."

More Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] Cons →

"They should support more VM, which is not currently supported.""As of now, Acropolis and VMware cannot talk to each other. Until we have some kind of interface, it would be much better for Nutanix if they built an interface which can talk. Otherwise, if I have a VMware stack and I already have a Nutanix stack, I create containers, I create clusters on VMware, I create clusters on Nutanix. All of these clusters cannot talk to each other. Then it has to be then subverted as a parallel execution. What happens then is that I have to work in two different environments within my data center. Practically, they are two different data centers but physically and logically, they are one. If they cannot talk to each other that creates a lot of issues. That is something which Nutanix has to develop because for Nutanix it is very simple. For example, Oracle is using a function called GoldenGate. They have a feature called GoldenGate which allows them to talk to various different environments which must really help.""It would be ideal if it was more secure.""One thing I've noticed is that, when you do a shift from VMware to Nutanix, it opens the setup of the VM that's currently running. If people from another site double click on it, it opens the VM instead of the setup of the unit. So I would suggest that this could perhaps be switched. That is so far the only change I would like. I would like it if they could fix the instance where you double click on a VM and it opens the VM instead of the setup. That's the only thing that's a major bother to me.""USB dongle-based licenses do not allow us to directly locate the USB ports on Nutanix.""We would like to see it support other systems outside of the compute stack from which it was built.""The productivity and work efficiency of Nutanix Acropolis AOS could improve.""Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure's LTS version needs to be more reliable."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "Cisco is quite expensive, but not in the initial first buy."
  • "Pricing is better if you buy more Cisco products."
  • "The pricing is a bit expensive."
  • "For customers in the private sector, this product can have a very high return on investment."
  • "If you don't look at the costs of the systems, the scalability is quite good."
  • "The price is a bit high. It could be better, but the product is worth the cost."
  • "I would like the pricing to be cheaper."
  • "Comparable solutions with switches, storage, and services are cheaper than HyperFlex. It should be cheaper."
  • More Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."

The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →

With Nutanix you have the freedom of choice. You can deploy it with several server hardware vendors or completely in the cloud.

I don’t know Hyperflex at heart, though.

Also, support at Nutanix is outstanding.
