We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I have been impressed by CloudStack's most recent updates around Kubernetes. In particular, they have worked with Kubernetes to support the Cluster API, and you can now easily integrate Kubernetes into CloudStack and get access to a lot of good features.""CloudStack helped us showcase our features through process visualization and functional solutions.""Killer features for me were: support for many hypervisors, ability to match business logic, "everything in one box," available APIs.""You can use a single API to get things done, rather than multiple APIs on multiple modules.""When compared to OpenStack, CloudStack is also an open-source platform that is continuously improving its features and capabilities with each new version release. Having worked with CloudStack 4.7, 4.14, and most recently, 4.17, I have noticed significant enhancements in the platform's features and customer experience, such as the introduction of a new user interface in the latest release. Notably, the latest versions have made major improvements to VM live migrations, making them more efficient and effective.""It is very easy to install and manage. It has the all modules in one node, unlike other software (OpenStack). The product allows a customized look and feel, and the ability to add custom workflows.""The initial implementation process was quite good.""Over the years, we have valued CloudStack for its stability."

"The most valuable feature of this solution is application control.""From a scalability perspective, I found the solution to be completely fine...The solution's technical support is absolutely fine.""The firewall and site-blocking features are valuable.""I am very comfortable with it, including it's reporting on threats and through its activities.""The documentation has been satisfactory.""The customer likes it for the graphs, the dynamics and the reporting functionality it offers.""It does a little bit better than some of the other products health-wise and updates-wise. It is really clear that a firewall is getting the signature updates in this timeframe. In some of the other products, usually, you have to go a couple of screens in to see that, but not so much in this product.""I like the tool's controller facility."

Cons
"I would like to see support for native VLAN, and fault-tolerance.""The numerous, multi-layered drill-down menus make it difficult to find one simple knob to turn.""From time to time there is a bug in calculating limits of resources for customer domain/account. Maybe it’s a problem with 4.9.2.""The area of Apache CloudStack that could stand the most improvement is the functionality/features around the virtual routers. They can be somewhat cumbersome to deal with at times and are the least stable piece of the product.""A technology upgrade is one item which could be improved upon a lot.""Companies need to be knowledgeable about cloud technology. It's not for novice users.""The main reason why we started looking for another solution: backups, replication, HA, and dependency on secondary storage. CS is quite sensitive for infrastructure, and any kind of network disruption between CS and secondary storage leads to VM hanging.""For time consuming operations like storage migrations, volume Snapshot restore and the like, we faced issues like MySQL operations timing out and status update failures. Those areas needs improvement."

More CloudStack Cons →

"The tool should provide a 10-15 days extension for customers when their license expires.""I find their logging a little bit trickier to manage. The logging of events is broken up into a lot of different categories. Instead of breaking up my logs into several different places, I personally like to have all the events in one spot and then filter them down. In particular, I find that troubleshooting on Fortinet takes a little bit longer just because of those functional breakups in the logs.""It's useful for us but if it had more educational reporting, it would good. It's not necessarily lacking but it's an area that could get better.""Fortinet FortiPortal could improve by providing a learning portal and better security.""There can be defects in Fortinet FortiPortal when functioning at high temperatures.""If you are a very small company or a person on your own, it's harder to get any response from technical support.""The solution is more expensive than other products.""So if it's more than a thousand, there could be some scalability issues. It becomes more complex as you go."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The Apache CloudStack is open source, so you do not have licenses to purchase."
  • "Give an effort to planning. If possible, contract a specialized consultant company for the initial setup and knowledge transfer."
  • "As far as I know, CS is still free of charge. If you want to pay some money, Citrix Cloud Platform is based on CS, I think. As for hypervisors – everything as usual, you need to pay for VMware and vCenter. As for XenServer, recently they changed the free feature list, so you may need to pay some money to get useful features like XenMotion."
  • "There is no license, so the product is free unless you are buying professional technical support services."
  • "CloudStack is an open source solution, so you don't need to pay anything for it. When our company develops something specially for CloudStack, it is donated to the Apache Software Foundation and provided to anyone that wants to use it."
  • "The solution is open-source and free."
  • "It is a 100% open-source solution needing just an Apache license. Also, there are no hidden fees to be paid."
  • "CloudStack is an open-source product."
