We performed a comparison between Dell Unity XT and Huawei OceanStor based on our users’ reviews in four categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.
Comparison Results: Based on the parameters we compared, Dell Unity XT came out ahead of Huawei OceanStor. Both products have similar deployment difficulty and support quality, but Huawei OceanStor has more features that need improvement and can get expensive, depending on the chosen licensing.
"Their technical support is excellent. It's the best out of any of the vendors we work with."
"It does efficient work of storing data while still delivering the performance that you would normally expect from a higher priced solution."
"I find two features of Pure Storage most valuable. The first is the "safe mode" function, and the second is its simplicity."
"We've had different types of storage, and three things of this solution are valuable. The first one is its outstanding performance. The second one is its stability. In the about three years that we've had it, we've had component failures, but we never had a service interruption or any data loss. The third one, which is really critical, is that it is super easy to use in terms of provisioning, storage, and managing the arrays. I'm able to maintain a multi-site environment with a couple of dozen arrays with a single mid-level storage admin."
"Performance, dedupe, and that it works well with database workloads are its most valuable features."
"The solution has probably reduced my power use substantially."
"We're getting good performance, and the compression ratio is also very good in Pure Storage FlashArray."
"The most valuable feature of Pure Storage FlashArray is its high stability level."
"Veeam Backup integration: Veeam is the defacto standard for backing up of virtual environments."
"The most valuable feature is the fast cache with functionality rewrite."
"It is easy to scale, maintain, and manage."
"I like that the performance is very good."
"The hardware itself, it differs from Compellent and differs from the VNX before it. It doesn't have a separate file harbor that goes with it, there are no separate NAS heads. It's 2U, you have file and block storage, so you get a quite a lot of services for a small footprint."
"Ease of use is probably number one, compared to the previous storage that we've had. Easy scalability, easy set up. Compared to everything else, the Unity is, well, you could call it child's play. As long as you know what you're doing storage-wise, Unity is really easy to use."
"There are also DR and data protection functions that we found in the new Unity, now that we are stepping up from VNX and other storage appliances, that we've started implementing."
"It will certainly help us scale bigger. If I look at the footprint, the VNX's was multi-rack. Now, all of a sudden, we're only at a portion of a rack. And, obviously, if we can scale within the same rack - we can certainly see that by the number of hard drives we've had to put in - we can scale a lot more easily."
"The performance and ease of management are the most valuable features."
"Excellent and efficient support, and the product is a good price."
"This is a stable storage system."
"It is easy to use, deploy, communicate and manage this solution."
"We get a quick response in case any component defaults. We have seen the benefits mostly."
"The solution is easy to use."
"Huawei OceanStor is stable."
"If your virtual machine that resides on it completely fills the storage space, thanks to it's built-in function of all-zero data space reclamation, you just have to ask to System Engineer to run a zero-free on hosts (thin provisioned) and you will get more space instantaneously."
"I would like to see some improvements on the FlashBlade side around the CIFS space support. I am not super familiar with all the different NAS protocols that they run on their box, but there could be some improvements made on SMB CIFS side."
"The initial setup was a little complex. We had some initial issues with the design and had to help correct some of the white papers for it, but it wasn't your standard use case."
"Having something native in the Pure Storage ecosystem would make it integrated and in one single company, and we wouldn't have to work with multiple organizations."
"I would love for them to have a hyper-converged solution."
"The credentials on the iSCSI interface are only available to type in with the Chrome browser, and not with the Firefox browser."
"I would like to migrate to the cloud in the future and know how that would actually work with this product."
"I recognize it's a difficult challenge, but I would like to see them make the pricing more reasonable."
"In the next release of the solution I would like to see Vormetric native block encryption."
"I think Dell EMC should be more careful in appointing partners, and they need to have better control over their partners. And if their partner has some problems with them, we should not suffer."
"We noticed in the last release of code that there were some inefficiencies around getting our data efficiency up in terms of dedupe and compression."
"We had one incident with a memory leak that led to controller reboot. Although it had no impact, when such things happens the storage should be more aware of it, send alerts, and propose corrective actions."
"A customer had to buy VMX because Unity didn't have WORM."
"I would like it to be a little bit easier to contact support. We can contact support, but we have to go through a phone tree. We get routed to different places. I might call support to say that I need a drive replaced and get transferred to three different groups before I get to the group I actually need."
"It could always use native replication. Then I could get rid of RecoverPoint."
"It isn't easy to find trusted partners for the product. The solution has issues with mid-level storage and does not come with enterprise storage."
"The only issue is with the product's scalability because it's not as scalable as the other polished tools in the market."
"Configuration complexity and the tools available."
"The management is not a good feature in all of Huawei products. It's not easy or simple. Huawei has some problems with management and handling storage information from one interface."
"The upgrading process needs improvement. Deploy it and notify the customers when new versions and stuff comes out. I don't think they're doing that well."
"Unfortunately, this product doesn't support Flash Disks, but it's IOPS capacity is a great compromise."
"The user interface is not so user friendly."
"The main concern is regarding the usability of the data storage."
"I would like to see the next generation all-flash, which could be combined."
"The overall price of the solution should be reduced."
