We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The cost benefit of this solution is most valuable. It is quite effective for the work for which we are using it. We are mainly running video servers on these, and we are quite happy with the resilience, density storage, and streaming capacity of the system.""Apollo Systems provide stuff that standard services do not. More HTDs, more compute power, at very reasonable pricing.""When we moved to the Apollo and all flash drives, we gained a lot of performance.""It enables us to implement software defined solutions very easily, because Apollo servers are certified for use with Linux systems""It's going to meet our needs moving forward, it is scalable.""HPE Apollo's most valuable feature is the ability to expand our storage capacity.""HPE Apollo's support is the most valuable feature.""We're going to buy another Apollo 6500. We may configure it with half the number of GPUs because that may be all we need. In a sense, we can see the Apollo 6500 being so powerful that we only need half the GPU capability that we have now."

"It uses well known architecture and it's easy to develop for.""It is stable and easy to manage.""The most valuable feature of the solution stems from the fact that it is more stable than AMD for VMware."

Cons
"We could, perhaps, use more GPUs in the future, go from eight to 16 GPUs per instance. That could run head-to-head against the DGX-1, the DGX-2 that NVIDIA has developed in their own chassis. That would be interesting to see.""I would want to see the flexibility of being able to run various network protocols including InfiniBand, Fibre Channel, as well as iSCSI, with iSCSI going up to 100 gigabytes per second -that would be outstanding.""Lustre seems to be just a little bit unstable overall.""We are quite happy with it, but its price and storage density can be better.""The technical support from HPE has always been good in my experience.""HPE Apollo's after-sales support and technical support should be improved.""One drawback which I had: When I needed to expand storage on the Apollo, I had significant problems getting disks for it. It was a very long wait-time. So, if I were to give any advice in regards to improving this product, I would say make more of the 8TB disks available quicker.""If there could be some training for our team, we would be better equipped to promote and support HPE Apollo."

More HPE Apollo Cons →

"We have to scale it ourselves but it scales. It depends on the software because it's mostly the hardware platform that Intel is managing.""When you have an Intel Server System, the prices may be much higher since it is a different processor, making the solution's pricing part one of its shortcomings where improvements are required.""The shipment time can be improved. When we order Intel products, we have to wait for a long time. They can increase the local services and engineers in China. Local engineers will be able to know and understand customer problems much better."

  • "The price of the solution is more expensive than Dell which is their main competitor. However, there are times we have managed to receive a comparable price."
  • "There is an annual license required to use HPE Apollo."
  • "It is an expensive solution but it is worth the money. The standard licensing cost is for the GPU and the features that someone is using. There are additional charges but they depend on the solution."

    Overview

The HPE Apollo high-density server family is built for the highest levels of performance and efficiency. They are rack-scale compute, storage, networking, power and cooling – massively scale-up and scale-out – solutions for your big data analytics, object storage and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads. From water-cooling that’s 1,000X more efficient than air, to “right-sized scaling” with 2X the compute density for workgroup and private cloud workloads, the HPE Apollo line is a dense, high-performance, tiered approach for organisations of all sizes.

Storage is simple with the Intel Storage System JBOD2000 family, a 2U form factor system with support for twelve 3.5" LFF or twenty-four 2.5" SFF drives with a single or multi-cable connectivity. The JBOD2000 family includes redundant, hot-swap fans and the option for redundant, hot-swap power supplies. The JBOD2000S2 products support 6Gb/s SAS/SATA connectivity via industry-standard SFF-8088 connectors with the latest JBOD2000S3 version supports up to 12 Gb/s SAS connectivity via industry standard SFF-8644 connectors. All these JBOD offerings are designed to provide highly available and easily expandable storage for Intel servers at an affordable price point.
