We performed a comparison between HPE SimpliVity and Rackspace OpenStack based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out what your peers are saying about Dell Technologies, Nutanix, VMware and others in HCI."I save both physical and virtual space."
"In our case, the cost and high availability are the two most important factors which we were looking for in a solution."
"StarWind vSAN was very easy to integrate into our system and ran flawlessly during our entire use time."
"This product now allows us to migrate virtual machines between nodes as if we had a dedicated $100,000 SAN in the mix without the additional cost and management of the SAN."
"The most useful aspect is the hyper-converged SD SAN and the ease to expand it by just adding cheap SSD or NVME disks."
"Virtual SAN runs on iSCSI, which is free and easy to configure. It's easy to manage from StarWind's GUI console, and it only required a few extra switch ports."
"The product creates opportunities with hybrid on-premise solutions."
"StarWind vSAN has allowed us to grow rapidly while still providing flexibility and reliability."
"The whole backup capability, where we are able to create backups and restore backups in typically 40 to 50 seconds, has been great."
"I like the expandability of the solution. We can effortlessly grow the storage and resources without downtime."
"The compression and deduplication features are most valuable because they allow us to have a small footprint for storage. It is a very stable product, and we are also able to get all that we need in terms of reporting."
"No SAN switches and having a native backup is pretty cool."
"Stability is pretty good. We have no complaints as it has been running seamlessly with no downtime."
"It is just a one-stop shop, a single appliance that I can control through my virtual center."
"It's a very nice solution. It's a complete solution that we are looking for because we don't have personnel with expertise."
"SimpliVity has provided our organization with a cost effective DR/data protection solution."
"I like its integration with GitLab and its simplicity. OpenStack has a lot of third-party libraries that it uses."
"The initial setup isn't too difficult."
"The solution is stable."
"The most valuable feature is the customization. With the customization you can really give the customers what they want."
"It created a reusable library with OpenStack features."
"There are many services that can be directly used which are not available in VMware."
"The documentation was plentiful and very helpful."
"Apart from the main features, I really appreciate OpenStack's microservices architecture and its flexibility for deployment with different tools."
"I would like to see an extensive set of cmdlets that could allow for easier automation as well as status management."
"When StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere nodes go offline unexpectedly, the nodes have to re-sync disks fully which takes a long time. We had a power failure and when both nodes came online, VMware vSphere didn't see StarWind disks before I manually re-scanned them form ESXi administration console even though it should happen automatically"
"An extended trial period would serve as a way to get clean insights into the technology's adaptability and alignment with their specific needs before committing to long-term integration."
"I would like to see improvements in the documentation area."
"I would like to see some additional, and possibly clearer, implementation videos with some slower and possibly more detailed descriptions of what the various steps of implementation are for someone who is unfamiliar with high availability and failover clustering in Windows."
"This solution should be more self-sufficient, running without creating domains or failover clusters."
"StarWind really needs to market its product more."
"I wish they would improve the documentation for the beginner level as it's not very clear on the web page."
"The greatest disadvantage is the update process. Every patch or release update must be checked and deployed with the HPE solution, which sometimes is a little bit difficult. It is not difficult in terms of installation, but it is difficult to get the patches in time."
"The technical support is weak. It is a layered product. It has a software solution on top of the SimpliVity solution, which is built on top of the hardware of the HPE DL380s. When we call for a problem that we know is related to the DL380, we get a SimpliVity guy trying to solve a SimpliVity problem. If it is not a SimpliVity problem, it's a hardware problem. So, it takes awhile for them to figure out which part of the organization should really be helping us."
"Needs to improve the cloud integration, such as Azure and AWS."
"They should optimize the administration stack because it is consuming too much memory. It ends up consuming 20% of memory. They have another product for this feature, but I would like to have this feature within HPE SimpliVity."
"We had minor problems with the initial setup but it was with our internal infrastructure."
"Not being able to apply ESXi patches as needed has always been a concern, but it has not become a big issue."
"The installation is quite easy but it could still be improved."
"Product doesn't scale."
"The line migration is a problem."
"So for the main stability, there have been a couple of issues that I've experienced."
"OpenStack is difficult for the novice in terms of beginning to use cloud tools."
"The seamless integration between MySQL services and the rabbitMQ database can be revised during the debugging phase."
"It could use more examples in different languages (API use cases)."
"OpenStack's UI, while user-friendly, could be improved to offer a more intuitive experience."
"VMware has a side-to-side replication feature, which is still more mature than Rackspace OpenStack's which can't be used in a production environment."
