We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"StarWind support has been great in helping resolve other issues not caused by their software.""Support keeps track of alerts of the system and verifies with us if we need help to fix any issues. They have great and quick technical support.""Having the ability to scale horizontally if needed is a huge plus for future growth.""One of the most valuable features is the way it sets up the virtual SAN, because we don't have to buy a separate appliance for storage. It uses the existing storage on the servers, which is definitely a cost savings for us.""Updates to server hardware are now painless and done during working hours with zero stress. We had a RAID failure a few months back, and nobody in the building even noticed and there was no after hours time used for repair.""Integration with virtualization platforms helped us to resolve many issues we were facing while using the physical storage.""We can lose a site or even two of our three, and we would lose no data and have no outage.""StarWind vSAN was very easy to integrate into our system and ran flawlessly during our entire use time."

"It's very simple to manage. It has reduced the footprint in the datacenters quite a lot.""The most valuable feature is the quick restore.""The backup and recovery is very fast, effective, and easy to use.""The features I have found most valuable are the convergence of the infrastructure and multi-platform support, for example, VMware and Hyper-V""Software upgrades and scalability can be done during normal business hours with no downtime.""I have saved time and money by moving to the platform.""The technical support is exceptionally good.""The ease of managing this system."

"StarWind VTL allowed us to back up to virtual tape that was created within Veeam and upload the tape to the cloud.""It is a stable solution.""I like the fact that we can simultaneously upload the virtual tapes to different cloud providers, and the settings can be adjusted to speed up the upload times even further.""The solution made our backups way more reliable.""The most valuable feature of the StarWind Virtual Tape Library is the archiving to the AWS cloud."

Cons
"StarWind Command Center's single-pane management solution only works with Hyper-V.""The setup and documentation for the installation with the free version could definitely be improved.""A web management interface would be good, especially for those coming from other solutions that have one.""The initial setup got a little confusing at a few points with differences between the VMware version in documentation vs the latest, etc.""We don't really have any issues with this product.""The documentation could be better.""The system performs as expected, but we're always looking for performance improvements regarding the best utilization of NVMe disks.""It would be nice to see a new UI for the windows client, as it is not the easiest to find settings."

"Our customers are always looking or a discount on the product.""A lot of our customers are using VMware and also are using Hyper-V. Hyper-V is not very stable on the HP SimpliVity.""In terms of what I would define as a perfect solution, I am looking for one that is easy to manage, has a real user-friendly interface, and something that is not too complex.""I can say that the support was better when it was a separate company, when it was SimpliVity. But, now with HPE it has not been quite as good. B""The product is expensive.""When we make some upgrades to the platform, it does take time to stabilize the structure again.""Simplify the backup and restore: With integrated backup and remote replication, it could reduce risk and eliminates the use of legacy data tools.""SimpliVity has little to no integrations."

More HPE SimpliVity Cons →

"The main thing that I felt could be improved was having an estimated time of completion for the virtual tape uploads to the cloud.""I am not sure if this is a limitation of my physical hardware or if it is the software itself. However, I would like the throughput to be faster.""The initial installation can be complex and should be simplified.""The solution's training process and online documentation could be more thorough."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "This solution, while costly as all these solutions are, was in fact less expensive than upgrading my old SAN."
  • "The price should be cheaper."
  • "ESXi licensing is a big part of initial investment if you do not already have that covered."
  • "All-in license, simple and fair."
  • "Other vendors fall short on price compared to HPE on this product."
  • "Cost is a factor. It is quite expensive."
  • "It seemed like it was expensive at first. Now that I have had it installed for a period of time, I think I got a great deal."
  • "For most use cases, look to see if you can use all-flash as the price point, as it has come down significantly."
  • More HPE SimpliVity Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "If you currently have Veeam there is no other solution that is as easy and affordable as StarWind."
  • "The pricing of the solution could be more flexible to meet the needs of smaller to mid-market size companies."
  • "The solution is cost-effective."
  • "The initial setup and deployment are also covered in the purchase at no additional cost."

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by HPE SimpliVity users.

Jeff S., Information Technology Manager at Troyer Foods, Inc. says the solution has “Phenomenal deduplication and compression, good support, and works on its own. SimpliVity is integrated with the hypervisor, and you have a single pane of glass. It is really hands-off. Once you set your backup schedules, you're done.

A Senior Datacenter Consultant at a computer software company mentions, “The most valuable feature is the ease of use and the storage virtualization layer, together with the built-in backups. That's what makes SimpliVity really useful, and how you can replicate data between different sites without paying an extra license for that feature. All the features are built into the product.”

PeerSpot user Doug C., IT Engineer at a government, comments, “Backups and restores occur very quickly. All SimpliVity management is done through vCenter, providing a single-pane of glass for all management and configuration functions. The advanced deduplication and compression greatly reduce the storage requirements, reducing the amount of expensive flash storage required. The 10G interfaces between the SimpliVity nodes greatly speeds up VM migrations between nodes. SimpliVity enables "stretched-cluster" operation with mirrored storage between the nodes, enabling automated failover. If a node or site goes down for any reason, the VMs on that node are automatically restarted on the other node.”

German I., Solutions Architect Data Center Servers and Storage at Tecnologia informatica, explains, “The integration possibilities regarding the administration console are one of the best configurations and one of the best features that differentiates this product from others in the market. Also, you can add extra coverage protection that includes everything inside of the hard drives — similar products don't do this. You can use it directly from the hypervisor, which is great.”

For SMB and Enterprises, who either look to get rid of backup tapes completely, or are willing to accelerate backup process and add an extra level of protection, our solution is StarWind Virtual Tape Library (VTL). It is an appliance that eliminates the need in physical tape and “pretends” to be a supported tape drive or autoloader, keeping all data on inexpensive, fast and high-capacity spinning disks.

Even with explosive data growth, StarWind VTL fits the backup into backup window by accelerating it, so the process does not overlap with production time. Optionally, it creates additional copy of backup data for better safety. It is also available in a software-only form, as part of StarWind VSAN functionality.

StarWind VTL targets those, who need to replace existing tape backup infrastructure or accelerate it if regulatory requirements prohibit replacement. In case the goal is just virtualizing tape backup or creating a stretched backup infrastructure, StarWind Tape Redirector will come in handy.
