We performed a comparison between IBM Spectrum Protect and Veritas Backup Exec based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two Backup and Recovery solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."Good user interface."
"The archiving feature is the most valuable aspect of the solution."
"For initial setup, we started with the blueprints, which were great. The blueprints allowed us to be able to decide if we needed to use small, medium,k or large. Because we are a large environment, we used a large blueprint. Once we followed everything in the blueprint, it was a smooth transition from there."
"It saves you a lot of storage."
"Disk-based implementation of a data protection solution for multiple sites is a better fit for my complex data protection needs."
"Once setup, you do not need to touch it again. You just need to do a formal check on possibly batch updates."
"The most valuable features are compression and de-duplication."
"The file-restoring feature is the most valuable."
"The beauty of the solution is that you can rely on it. It offers a quick recovery time when it's backing up items. The way it recovers data is excellent."
"One nice feature with Backup Exec is mainly that disaster can happen to any server and the disk image can be destroyed very easily. It's also easy to fully email the backup image and restore the server."
"This is a very flexible product, which allows you to back up not only the physical environment but also the cloud environment."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to back up IBM Power virtual servers."
"It is a simple and flexible solution to work with."
"The solution is stable."
"Once the solution is integrated with the Exchange, you just click Exchange to back up that file."
"It is easy to set up and use for daily processes and a good solution for preserving crucial data."
"It does what we need it to do, but it could be better with VM backups. It could be better integrated with virtual machines or VM backups, but that's why they have their Plus out now. Plus version is more geared toward VM backups. The regular version is more for endpoint clients."
"Sometimes we experience trouble with the backup transfer of the control files."
"They can include more cloud-enriching features. I would like IBM Spectrum Protect to have the functionality for backing up a VM directly in Azure. I would like to be able to back up a VM directly in Azure without spinning up a Hyper-V cluster and backing up the virtual server."
"In terms of features, they've got it all covered. The features they have are quite good. The only downside to it is that it is for an enterprise or big organization. In my opinion, it is not for a small business."
"Replication services would be nice. If these could be enhanced to be always on so multiple storage backup services could be added as a cluster pool. This would provide a better availability service."
"Anytime you are not very current and call in with an issue, it is hard to get it resolved. It will depend on how far back you go though."
"Our new leadership has pushed us to go more toward the cloud, so we are definitely going to leverage anything we can in that direction."
"When it comes to virtualization in IBM it's not perfect."
"We've experienced some performance issues with Backup Exec. The backup jobs take too long to complete."
"Whenever a job fails, it would be a great improvement to be able to resume the job from that feature. Suppose a job was started this morning and that it is going on while there are interruptions like network issues, server restart issues, server connectivity issues, services stopping, etc. For some reason, let's assume that the job failed or that it was mistakenly canceled by another person. It will be a great improvement if that failed job can be continued."
"In terms of improvements, I think the pricing model could be improved. They charge you by port, for every port that you have even if you're not using all of them."
"I wish that they have an outlet for the other products from Veritas built into the Backup Exec product. For example, Backup Exec does only server backup. Currently, it is possible to read the backup of one other product, but if they can add more products so that you can just go into the dashboard of these other products by clicking on a button within the Backup Exec product, it would be great."
"Enhanced support for cloud backup needs to be added."
"The solution is too heavy and complex with 1,000 menus and options that make it messy rather than lightweight."
"This solution does not support image-level backup of a physical server."
"They can improve the reporting component. The reports aren't user-friendly at all. You have to download them to Excel to get statistics."
