Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Almost all security features are available out-of-the-box and can be deployed rapidly.""The solution has numerous configuration options to increase security in communication.""Layer7 API Management's availability on an on-premises deployment model, actually decreases the production time if its users have any issues at the server level.""The most valuable features of Layer7 API Management are integration, ease of use, building APIs easily, and portal straightforward.""The speed and versatility in the implementation of APIs without writing a line of code in any programming language.""API Enhanced Portal 4.1 looks very promising. API Gateway policy manager for writing policies is excellent. It is the best in the industry for policy writing.""The solution fills our two most important concerns in seeking an API solution by providing a reliable gateway and security options.""API discovery using CA Live API Creator is helpful for integrating with multiple backends, for discovering and kickstarting the API creation process. It is a very good feature."

"The scalability is very good. That was a key factor in the selection, like how it could be pushed to high volume and scalability, which seemed to be very good.""The feature I find most valuable is that this solution allows us to manage our security.""The portal for developers that this solution provides has great functionality.""The most valuable feature is the load balancing with the circuit-breaker function.""You can set up workflows and write limited pieces of logic.""It is a good product for API management."

Cons
"If they had different levels of support available then it would be easier to justify the costs.""The development toolkit used for creating APIs should be more online and user-friendly. Deployment and tracking could also be improved. Tools like Apigee provide a complete online experience along with RESTful APIs, to manage all activities. It is a very nice and user-friendly solution compared to CA.""The portal is not the most intuitive and the way things are displayed makes it difficult to find the information we need.""we cannot add gateways on the fly because there are a lot of moving parts; endpoint connectivity is one of them. If we add more nodes then the rate-limiting feature is affected. This kind of gateway always has the scalability issue. But, I think CA is coming up with its Microgateway, which is in Beta. If they stabilize their Microgateway platform, we could do very well in terms of scalability.""There are old algorithms that the tool does not support - and it shouldn't, in my opinion. But sometimes customers need old algorithms, from old use cases and old applications, migrated to the platform. At those times, there are hiccups that happen.""One area where it certainly needs to improve is the way it allocates requests, in terms of rate limiting. Also, there is no native Kafka connectivity.""The Portal is not stable.""Layer7 API Management could improve by assing more portal-based capabilities."

"We ran it for a while, but then we decided to move away from Tyk, because Tyk's cloud version, the SaaS version, has a significant limitation of limited flexibility, so you can't program very much.""It is a young product and does not have the kind of brand recognition that would make it a more popular solution with our clients.""We would like a better tool for generating documentation for the APIs to be developed.""I would like to see some additional features like having some extensions for .NET core because we use it for our back-end language.""In terms of our usage, the main area of concern is that they tend to build enhancements slightly ahead of the considerations for what those enhancements and extensions are. So it could be slightly better communication with the customer base that would be my main issue with them.""Sometimes when new features are released, they are not immediately stable."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "CA has great pricing for gateways, so negotiate with your sales team."
  • "If the CA pricing for API management would be a little lower, they would be able to cover a broader market."
  • "Purchase 4.0 now and wait until they flush out the 4.1 problems."
  • "It depends on your use case of course, how much you want to go with that, because it can get pricey and depends on the size of your company."
  • "Be aware of additional licenses for your warm standby. Ensure you get plenty of non-production licenses."
  • "Do not buy piecemeal."
  • "It's my manager who takes care of the pricing. But I keep on hearing that it's a little pricey, it's on the higher side. That is what he says."
  • "Pricing is competitive. CA is ready to offer attractive discounts."

  • "The price is low compared to other products of a similar type."
  • "There are different versions and plans available depending on the requirements, so there is flexibility in terms of the pricing."
  • "It had a free version, which suited many of our needs, but not all, but we were happy to go ahead with the licensed version as well, which is the paid version."
  • "We are using the open-source version of this product, so there are no licensing costs for its use."
  • "The cost curve is far smoother, both in terms of volume and the number of calls it's running on, compared to most competitors. So it's a tad more expensive at the very low end, but the curve is nothing like Apigee or some of the others."
