We performed a comparison between Microsoft Parallel Data Warehouse and Vertica based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two Data Warehouse solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."It is a stable solution...It is a scalable solution."
"It is a very stable database."
"One of the most important features is the ease of using MS SQL."
"The solution's integration is good."
"It handles high volumes of data very well."
"The most valuable features are the performance and usability."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is performance."
"Tools like the BI and SAS are excellent."
"Bulk loads, batch loads, and micro-batch loads have made it possible for our organization to process near real-time ingestions and faster analytics."
"Its projections and encoding are excellent tools for tuning large volumes."
"Vertica enabled us to close large deals. Customers with large data sets had to be migrated from PostgreSQL to Vertica due to performance."
"DBAs don’t need to add a partition every month/quarter like with other DBs."
"It maximize cloud economics for mission-critical big data analytical initiatives."
"Vertica has a few features that I like. From an architecture standpoint, they have separated compute and storage. So you have low-cost object storage for primary storage and the ability to have several sub-clusters working off the same ObjectStore. So it provides workload isolation."
"Vertica is a great product because customers can compress and code data. The infrastructure that data warehouse solutions need is a commodity server so that customers don't have to invest in infrastructure."
"Any novice user can tune vertical queries with minimal training (or no training at all)."
"Concurrent queries are limited to 32, making it more of a data storage mechanism instead of an active DWH solution."
"I would like to see better visualization features."
"SQL installation is pretty tricky. The scalability and customer support also should be improved."
"It needs more compatibility with common BI tools."
"This solution would be improved with an option for in-memory data analysis."
"We'd like to see it be a bit more compatible with other solutions."
"They need to incorporate a machine learning engine."
"I think that the error messages need to be made more specific."
"I have found that coding support could be simplified."
"Some of our small to medium-sized customers would like to see containerization and flexibility from the deployment standpoint."
"Vertica offers a platform-as-a-service version, but their software-as-a-service solution is only available on AWS. They need to get a SaaS version on Azure and GCP as fast as possible."
"Suboptimal projection design causes queries to not scale linearly."
"Promotion/marketing must be improved, even though it is a very useful product at very good price, it is not as "popular" as it should be."
"I think they need an easy client so that you can write queries easily, but it's not necessarily a weak point. I think some users would need them."
"Vertica seems to scale well, except for one use case where you are on a multi-node cluster. For example, if you had a nine-node cluster, one node goes down, then the eight nodes don't scale, because the absence of the node is very apparent, which is a problem. If you have nine nodes or multiple nodes, the whole idea is that if one of those nodes goes down, then you should not see an impact on the system if you have enough capacity. Even though we have enough capacity, you can still see the impact of the one node going down."
"Performance of management of metadata layer (database catalog) needs improvement. We still have to have smaller customers on PostgreSQL; Vertica cannot manage thousands of schemata."
